We really enjoyed our time here. The apartments are well constructed and have everything you would need to prepare simple meals. All of the crockery etc is good quality; the AC works well. As others have said the outdoor space is peaceful with plenty of places to relax in a variety of settings. Maria who delivers the breakfast and cleans the apartments is lovely and very helpful. There is a washing machine to do laundry and each apartment has a clothes line outside-and obviously there is no issue with drying :) The breakfast we had consisted of grapes, cretan rusks, bread, biscuits, with plenty of coffee pods/butter/jam/milk cartons also provided (and raki). A bit heavy on the carbs for us but great to have something in to eat and drink. 10 minutes walk to the beach and tavernas. Wifi really poor but we knew that and that was part of it's charm.

Loved it!

I have spend some beautiful and quiet moments here in which I could relax. Really friendly and helpful people that do every little thing you need. Rooms are provided with a o lof of tables and seatings. I would like to come back here again some other time:).

Beautiful quiet time, to relax and spend your holiday.

Wonderful staff. Beautiful gardens with many quirky places to relax. Lots of shady and sunny spots, depending on your preference. Every need had been anticipated. Short walk to beautiful beaches and a selection of tavernas.

A little slice of paradise with wonderful staff.

Yiannis Retreat is a fantastic place to unwind and really relax. It’s is in a quiet location, a 15 minutes leisurely stroll from the beach. So, if there would be any noise coming from the beach and the tavernas you wouldn’t hear it. And Yiannis doesn’t have a pool (like all/most accommodation in Zakros) which ensures it’s nice and quiet here. Just what we were hoping for. But it may not be the place for teenagers or people that are looking for a party. 
I guess most of the wonderful things have already been mentioned by others on this site and I can only confirm. Katerina and Maria are very kind and helpful. What was a really nice touch were the sweet and savory home made treats that they spoiled us with every day of our long stay. Whether it was cake with walnuts, cookies, the first figs os the season, dolmas, pasties etc, everything was absolutely delicious. 
Even though the tavernas at the beach are very nice any time of the day, we also spent many evenings just sitting on our sea view terrace in front of our garden apartment with a glass of wine and some cheese and a salad.

Truly a retreat

The village of Kato Zakros truly feels as if it is at the end of the world. Indeed it is a challenging drive across the mountains to reach it. Yiannis Retreat is truly a garden of Eden with beautifully kept gardens and views over the sea. It is fifteen minutes to walk to the village and its 5 tavernas.  We stayed in the studios which have been traditionally designed with many lovely features. Breakfast supplies and other treats were brought daily by Katerina and Maria. Hope to return soon.

Garden of Eden

Kato Zakros seems to be at the end of the world and it's the perfect place to take things slow. We stayed 2 nights at Yannis and loved it. Very clean, very comfortable, an amazing attention to details inside the room and in the garden. The "breakfast basket" is tasty. Free mountain bikes are available. 


Excellent relax

Luckily got the last room here as a walk in. Zakros is surrounded by wild and woolly country. Arrived here after hiking the Valley of the Dead. Set in a beautiful garden surrounded by a vineyard, orchard and market gardens, the first thing I noticed was attention to detail. From the hand made cushions and curtains, to the bunch of grapes and fresh fruit in the bowl, everything was perfectly curated. There are five rooms made out of stone with outdoor areas overlooking the Carpathian Sea. They are small and simple, but immaculately clean and they just feel great. There are lots of toiletries, utensils and glass, ice in the fridge and a delicious breakfast supplied. I could not recommend this place more highly.

A serene retreat

Kato Zakros is a peaceful, serene location tucked into a cove where the "Dead's Gorge" cascades into at the very east-end tip of Crete. We stayed at Yianni's Retreat that sits just atop the shoreline where there are a row of tavernas. Kato Zakros consists of places to stay and tavernas. There are no shops or other diversions to disrupt the peacefulness. There are some shops, i.e. markets to buy food and other necessities in the upper village of Zakros, which is a 20 min. drive. 

We loved Yianni's Retreat, Kato Zakros and the surrounds. The place is beautifully put together and tended by Yianni and his lovely wife Katerina. The word that comes to mind is bucolic. We miss it and the people there already, and would go back tomorrow!

If you truly want to get away from it all...

Beautiful, small cottages set alongside a shared garden which has numerous seating areas, with benches, chairs and hammocks. The fabulous plants and trees provide privacy to each little area. The cottages are small, so no room for extra beds. They a very small kitchenette with fridge and two little hobs. Fresh coffee, bread and biscuits, fruit,  jams, wine and raki are supplied. There is air conditioning. The WiFi is weak, which is perfect. You really only be here if you are looking peace and quiet and a complete getaway. The beach is just 10 minute walk away, and you’ll pass the entrance/exit to the Gorge of the Dead and also the Kato Zakros Minoan Palace.  The teenage girls loved it (despite the lack of WiFi) so we’re hoping to be back next year.

Beautiful haven away from the crowds.

Stayed here for a 2 night break whilst on holiday in Crete. Arrived to a warm, friendly welcome from Katerina and were blown away by the beauty of the gardens and the lovely little touches of the accommodation with wine & raki, fruit, olives, biscuits, cake and bread all waiting for us as a welcome gift. 
The gardens are stunning and have lots of little, private seating/hammock areas to enjoy the peace and relax.
About a 5 minute walk to the entrance of the gorge (we walked a little way in due to the heat, but it is impressive)! 
Walk to the beachside tavernas takes around 15 minutes, approx the same for the ruins of Zakros Palace. 
For cat lovers: There are 2 very friendly stray cats that live in and around the gardens. We didn’t have anything to feed them with but other guests were definitely feeding them as they looked well and healthy & we saw some bowls of cat biscuits. We did put a bowl of water down for them both and they took it in turns to drink it all & seemed to really appreciate it. (There is also a water feature in the garden that I’m guessing they can access). 
All in all, a really special place & we hope to return!
