We were greeted by the  very friendly owner who is fluent in English (having lived and worked in NZ for a while) and checked in immediately. We were given a larger room than we had booked and thankfully it was on the 1st floor.  There is no lift in the property but the stairs are manageable. 

The whole place is in need of some TLC but this is not a criticism, just observation.  The public rooms lend themselves to a bygone era when this would have been a very glamorous hotel: it's still beautiful in our opinion.  

Breakfast was served to our table,in the delightful breakfast room,  and once again is reminiscent of that bygone era. It's not a blow out meal but a great kick start to the day and at less then €10 it's great value.

There is on site parking and at first the €9.50 per day charge seems a bit steep - BUT - it's worth every penny as there is very little parking nearby being so close to the old town.  

The location is just perfect: 100m to a street full of bars and restaurants, 300m to the Lantern Tower, and maybe 400m to the old port where there are more bars and restaurants, and plenty of boat trips.

If there have to be negatives then there are just a few:-  The hairdryer is a bit feeble, the step up from the pavement is very high (old body speaking!) and there are no tea making facilities in the room. 

If you want all the mod cons of a soul-less chain hotel then don't come here: if you want a friendly welcome, something a bit quirky and can appreciate the place for what it is now rather than what it one was, it's perfect. 

All in all we loved it.

Reminiscent of a bygone era - and loved it.

This hotel has a car park, rare in La Rochelle, it is moments from superb restaurants and bars. The rooms are clean and the owner is very helpful and so are the rest of the staff. Breakfast was tasty with fresh croissants.  This hotel is reminiscent of faded grandeur, the building is a dream to explore with architectural detail.  It has been in the same family for 4 generations and was once their family home.  If you want, plush, luxury fittings then don't stay here.  However,  if you like charm, a central location and the chance to experience a quirky hotel then this place is for you.  We loved it and incidentally, we had the best nights sleep of our holiday! 

Faded charm

This is a hotel that has clearly been 'grand' in its heyday & the downstairs still retains many period pieces and a sense of charm & elegance. 

But bedrooms now are looking a little tired and old. That said, bed linen, toilet etc were spotlessly clean. Free wifi in the room, tv & in the en-suite a hairdrier.

There seemed to be some issues with lighting in some of the corridors when we visited. Some lights removed or damaged making some windowless corridors to some rooms very difficult & a slight smell of mustiness in those areas. No doubt this is being remedied & our room was unaffected by either.

We only saw 2 staff, both were friendly & helpful & both spoke good English.

The location of the hotel is excellent. Its about 50 yards from the beginning of a bar/restaurant area, about 150 yards from the old port area & about 250 yards from the shopping area.

Great location

We spent a night here and thankfully no longer.

The hotel has a great location to visit this wonderful town but it badly needs a face lift.

The tiles in the bathroom were coming adrift and needed re-grouting. There were unpleasant stains on the carpet and everything felt a bit grubby. There was no kettle or facilities to make a cup of tee or coffee.

The staff were perfectly amenable but we were glad to get out.

Tired and grubby

Room offered had no curtains because they had been pulled down by a previous guest, mould on ceiling above window, there was a stale smell around the bed. The bathroom was very out dated. There were two flights of stairs and no help with cases.
