We stayed at the San Carlos when we saw our first choice in Barranca, Hotel Pipaton, was a bit out of our budget range. We needed a place to stay one night before catching a chalupa down the Magdalena river to El Banco (which was one of the best trips we have ever done in Colombia) The staff at San Carlos were very professional and welcoming. The air conditioned lobby was blissfully cool as was the comfortable room. On arrival they also gave us vouchers for a free drink in the terrace bar. The hotel is also just a 5 minute walk from the port where you catch the chalupa (tip: buy your ticket the night before if you can, and arrive 15-20 mins before departure to make sure you get a good seat on the boat).

All Colombian citizens, regardless of the length of their stay, and all foreigners who stay in the country for at least 60 consecutive days, are required to pay a national sales tax (19%) on their accommodation during their stay.
