Nice hotel, basic amenities, WiFi strong. Location is good with many shopping nearby, MacDonald, KFC and ajisen ramen is nearby. there is a massage shop in the hotel.. Nothing much in this lighting town. The only bad things is about the for sale stuff in the room, they accuse me secretly taking the USB cable to use and quietly put it back and wanted to charge me for the cable, i refused and quarrel with them.. in the end, they didnt charge me for it and return my deposit. They even claim they check every time each time they make up the room for new guest but which i confirm they didn't! that is the bad experience. Hotel have many rooms.. small room.. but nice room. there a convenient shop behind the hotel. There are a few motorcycle taxi behind the hotel.

Xin Du is located right in the heart of Guzhen city, the LED hub of china. Its a strictly business hotel with no extra facilities but just perfect for business stay. The rooms are dated and need renovation desperately. 

The internet facility is good and most of the factories are in a 30 min distance.

Lots of indian food available around and easy transportation facilities too.

All in all a perfect hotel for a business traveller.


Perfect budget hotel

The hotel location is very good at the center of Guzhen City , Zhongshan, It's a Suitable choice for normal budget , I have stayed for four nights, there was small trouble in the bathroom , their service team fixed everything.

Normal Hotel

The Xin Du is one of Guzhen’s best-value (lower-priced!) hotels. This is the second time I have enjoyed staying here and I recommend it. There! You don’t have to read the rest of the review now!

The centre of Guzhen is almost entirely given over to lighting shops, the outlying suburbs to lighting factories. 80% of the world’s lighting is manufactured in Guzhen.  But then you would know that if you are coming here: there’s not much else to do in Guzhen other than buy lighting!

The Xin Du has one of the best locations.  Imagine the town square in Guzhen: across the road from it is a large upmarket department store and digital cinema complex, with a supermarket beneath. There’s a hotel at each end of this complex: the Xin Du is the 2-1/2-star hotel on the left that the locals tend to use; the International (Yucca) is the 5-star hotel at the other end (with prices to match). The same company runs both hotels.

If the company is paying, stay at the International: I have, you will want for nothing.  If you are paying, stay at the Xin Du: it’s 30% of the price. Book with an online travel agency to get the best prices, such as eLong, a Chinese one that has an English option and handles foreign credit cards briskly and efficiently.

The rates vary according to the season, from CNY 160 to about CNY 207 (around $US 26 to $US 34) per night.  The Chinese Yuan is loosely pegged to the $US currently. 

The first thing that hits you as you walk in: the place smells deliciously clean.  Of course it’s fake: stuff they pump into the ventilation to kill the germs and smells of humanity.  But it smells great! The staff are nice.  They struggle with English; but give them time, they will find a way.  Hint: write it down; English is much easier to read than it is to listen to.

There are two kinds of room: “Standard” and “Business”. The rooms are small; the Standard rooms are 25 square metres, the Business rooms allegedly 35 square metres.  In practice the difference is difficult to detect. You will have plenty of space to sleep and wash.  If you want to hold a meeting, ask at the front desk for a meeting room.

The front side of the hotel has a nice view, but gets some traffic noise: ask for a rear or inside room if that is going to be a problem.

Someone has decided that dark polished wood and dim lighting is “luxurious”. In the Lighting Capital of the World, the rooms are dark – go figure.

All the basics are there: shower with mixer tap, TV, Internet, music, sit-down toilet with toilet paper, queen-sized bed. The bed is very firm, Chinese-style: if that does not suit you, don’t stay here, because this hotel has no option. The body wash and shampoo are different colours: important for those of us who wear glasses we have to take off in the shower! Note that while Chinese hotels provide toilet paper, Chinese public toilets DON’T. Chinese people carry large paper handkerchiefs for the purpose: make sure you bring your own also!

There’s cable TV; on an elderly tube-type TV.  It’s fine for checking out the BBC news.  Guests in a business hotel are unlikely to have much time to spend watching TV. There are 59 channels (How do I know this?  The English language ones start at 51…).

Laundry service is a little slow.  And rather expensive.  Whereas I expect a 5-star to have the laundry back the same day, in the Xin Du it takes two and a half days.  What costs 110 CNY in Nanchang costs 210 CNY here.

An interesting feature of Chinese hotels is that they will turn the air conditioner plant off whenever they can. If you get a look at the air pollution in some of the larger cities from the coal-burning power stations, you will immediately see why! In Guzhen you will get cooling only in summer. In winter you won’t need heating: Guzhen is in the tropics.

One important difference, and the reason I ended up in a Business room, is that cable Internet is available only in the Business rooms.  Internet is free in all rooms, but only by WiFi in the standard rooms.  Anyone who connects their computer by WiFi in China needs to be completely comfortable sharing all their credit card details with the rest of China, because within an hour or two, the “neighbours” will know more about your financial affairs (and have more control over them…) than you do.  If you are going to use the Internet in China, plug in by cable, and ensure all your “sharing” options are disabled by your firewall. Trust me, this is not “different” in the USA or Europe, they just don’t discuss it so much.

The Xin Du hotel provides tea but not coffee.  It caters more to Chinese guests, and they don’t like coffee.  You can buy plentiful supplies of “2+1” -- instant coffee with sugar and whitener -- at the Yinhua supermarket beside the hotel. Don’t expect cheap prices in the shopping mall: the days of cheap prices in China are over.  The department store stocks a lot of international brands: the genuine articles, at the same prices you will pay at home.

The Xin Du does not provide breakfast. There are a la carte restaurants on the third floor of the hotel.

When I stayed most recently, most restaurants in town were closed for Spring Festival.  Not a problem: walk out of the BACK door of the hotel and turn right: what I call “The Everything Shop” is across the road on the corner.  It seems to sell literally everything: stationery, snacks, drinks, electrical cables… and bowls of noodles in soup.  They will do a tasty breakfast for 7 RMB (about $1.40) – 10 RMB ($2.00) if you add dumplings.  They open early until late at night.
If you walk out the FRONT door and turn left, there are McDonalds and KFC within a few steps.  But that would be a terrible admission of defeat, when surrounded by so much delicious Chinese food.  Sadly, you will find both are well-patronised by Chinese families – what have we done to them?!?!?!

For a more substantial meal, I recommend the Ajisan Ramen, a noodle restaurant across the road from the Everything Shop.  This is a multinational Japanese fast food chain with hundreds of restaurants all over the world.  The foot is fast, cheap (80 to 100 Yuan, about 16 to 20 dollars) and good.

For something different, try the Little Sheep hot pot restaurant.  You select various items and cook them yourself at your table, in a pot of boiling soup.  The Little Sheep is directly across the town square from the hotel: walk straight across and as you get closer you will see a restaurant with a green top and a red LED sign a little to the right of the sound stage. The proprietor’s son has excellent English and will help you choose.

Outside the Little Sheep is a sound stage, from which they conduct Line Dancing most nights.  Line dancing is very popular in China. Someone who knows a lot about location sound built a very capable sound system in that sound stage – you will hear it quite clearly from your room!  You could ask for a room on the other side of the hotel, but it is much more fun to go across and join in!

That side of the square is where all the banks are.  Almost every large bank in China is side by side across the town square from the Xin Du hotel. Most point-of-sale terminals in China cannot yet transact foreign chip-and-pin cards (hotels usually can: the Xin Du can). But the ATMs of the top-tier banks can transact overseas cards.  Before you leave your country, ask your bank if they have a partner arrangement with a Chinese bank: if so, that’s the one to use. 
If in doubt, look for the ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China), CCB (China Construction Bank), Bank of China, ABC (Agricultural Bank of China) or Bank of Communications. They offer levels of service we can only wish for at home! A Chinese ATM expects a six-character PIN.  If yours is only four digits, key the PIN and hit Enter.  If that doesn’t work, try adding two zeros either before or after the PIN. Don’t have more than three tries, unless you know the Chinese for “The ATM swallowed my card!”

Across the road from the Xin Du, you will see men lounging around on motorcycles and motorised rickshaws.  Those are “taxis”. Not recommended unless you can give destination directions in Chinese and haggle the fare before you get in.  Although they’re good for getting you back to the hotel if you get lost: keep the hotel key-folder with you, it has a map on the back that you can show the driver.  Car-type taxis, some with meters, are normally outside the International hotel about 300 metres (yards) away. A taxi to the Guangzhou Baiyun airport should cost less than CNY 600 (about $100; 500 yuan plus about 100 in expressway tolls) and take about 2 hours.

The Guzhen bus station/ticket office is out the back of the Xin Du, past the Everything Shop and turn left (it’s sign-posted). The bus to Guangzhou Baiyun airport is 70 RMB.  The trip takes about three hours.  Buses also leave for Shenzhen (the electronics manufacturing centre of China) and Hong Kong. Or you can take a taxi to the Metro station in Guzhen: from there it’s a one hour ride by high-speed train to Guangzhou West, from which you can get the airport subway direct to the airport.
