The st clair hotel hostel was a heritage building, with a nautical theme running through it. It was small and quaint and a very inexpensive option. i aprreciated the free tea and coffee offered at all hours. The pass code to get in to makes you feel safe.

Staying in a part of history

I was travelling to Vancouver for work. My original hotel booking fell through. When I did a new search hotels and Air Bnb were hundreds a night. Then I found this place. I'm nearly fifty and haven't stayed in a hostel for decades. More fool me. Instead of corporate sameness this place has charm and character. And it is a fraction of the price. Don't go expecting the Four Seasons and you won't be disappointed. Look twice before making up your mind. It is clean and light. The location is great. I had to share a bathroom and shower but they were never busy and always fresh. My room was generous and quiet with a sink. My only complaint is there was no reading light but my phone did the same job. The building itself is quirky and interesting, the staff and other guests polite and pleasant. At the very least one chapter of your next novel will be set here. And you can spend all the money you didn't blow on a fancy hotel on breakfast, dinner and speedboats. 

Really glad I did something different

Easy to reach from the subway stations Burrard and Waterfront. From Waterfront you have a bit of an incline to reach the St Clair. I was taken aback by the stairs up to the entrance, which is easy to miss. No grand entrance here. Left my suitcase at the bottom of the stairs and asked the woman at the desk( 2nd floor)to help me. The desk staff was very friendly and helpful. When I checked out I asked for help again to get my suitcase down to the street and she did immediately. It is a century building,old, very small rooms, very small common room. Had private room and always travel with ear plugs, which were needed, my room was next to bathroom, not good.

Close to Gastown, good for backpackers.

The good: it's got a nice atmosphere. Close the sky train and in central Vancouver. The staff were all friendly too. Also the Ramen place on the same Street is fantastic!

The bad: it's pretty small (dorms are four beds per room) and there isn't really a proper kitchen either - so not great if you're on a budget and want to self cater

Good budget hostel if you're in town for a few days

Very  basic accommodation. We had a family room with 2 sets of bunk beds. The room was very tight without a lot of storage for our bags. We had a sink in the room. The beds were comfy and the hostel was quiet so we slept well. 
The Hostel does not have a kitchen space or a large common space so the community feel of a hostel is non-existent. Centrally located so we had an easy time exploring. We really just slept and showered here and for that, the place was fine. Cool vintage maritime vibe but definitely run down and could use a paint job and deep clean to freshen the place up. Reception was super kind and helpful.

Basic accommodation

This is  a small hotel on Richards St.  It is an ok hotel for an emergency  booking.  It is an old historic building dating to 1911?  It has an steep stairs at the entrance.  It has a secure door way that you need a code.  The dek  lady was friendly.The hotel is expensive for what you get.  The rooms arre  basic.  There was a  sink in my room... Toilets were down the hall. Its close to some  good restaurants around the corner.  Public transit is a couple  minutes walk away. 

Old Hotel

This is an old hotel/hostel with very basic facilities. The rooms and common areas are extremely dark and kitchen facilities minimum. The rooms are pricey for what they are and the least expensive room will put you directly next to the toilets. I upgraded to a room where the Wi-Fi didn't work and was told it was only guaranteed to work in the common area. The best thing about this place is the location and ability to store luggage but I did not enjoy my stay here.

Central location but very run down

Stayed here once before and didn't remember it being so bad so thought we'd go back despite bad reviews as it's so cheap (relative for Vancouver!), but I advise paying more for a better place.
Everywhere was dirty, specifically the blanket in our room had muddy footprints and the shower floor was slimey and stank of mould.
The fridge on the first floor made an awful high pitched whistle and the rooms by the alleyway get noise from live music in the bar below, as well as the drunk people in the street.
All the rooms have a window above the door that let lots of light in from the lights in the corridor that can't be switched off.
The bathroom and kitchen facilities are limited and grim.
Service was friendly enough but we waited nearly 10 mins for someone to arrive at reception when checking in, by which time several other people were waiting behind us. We checked out after 8am but reception was still closed.
This hostel is not fit for purpose, stay somewhere else.

 Some of the staff are really unfriendly.
 They ask you to go on a private room, if you wanna extend your stay after a week.
 The cleaning staff ask you to leave your bedroom when they make a bed, no matter what you're doing or sleeping..."for their privacy" haha
 kitchen is just 1 elec stove, really not done to cook.

Terrible hostel which calls itself a hotel. My booking with hostelworld was for a twin room with 2 beds, however the room was actually just a bunkbed. When I asked to change to a twin room as originally sold to me, I had to pay extra to change. The staff were also not accommodating in letting me leave my baggage securely in my original room before transferring to my new room. Instead I had to leave it in the corridor before the reception staff arrived in the morning to take it into the reception. The staff did leave my baggage in the new room, however they did not contact me to tell me this as the reception shut early that day. I managed to find a junk email from the original booking about a code for a key box and found a key to the new room, no thanks to the staff. Aside from that, the wifi just didn’t work, the room were pretty bleak and dirty. It is also very noisy from the surrounding roads. It’s located centrally but right in front of a small park area that has an abundance of drug abusers and homeless people. It’s doesn’t feel very secure as a building as well.
