If you go there, book through the hotel itself, not through Booking.com or other service.  Otherwise you will probably get a one-star room.  The rooms in the mansion (main building) may be 4-star, but we got put in the Carriage House at the back, which was very basic, with a dirty old doormat and peeling paint (see photo).  There was nobody at reception, just an envelope with our key.  There was no Wifi in our room.  When we went to ask about this, we had trouble finding anyone, were treated poorly and given the run-around.  We never did get Wifi.  They claim to have a restaurant, but it is not open year-round and was closed in June 2023 when we were there.  The bed was  OK and there was hot running water, but not much else, not even a TV.  The breakfast was good: French toast, bacon, fruit and coffee.  We were invited to look around the rooms in the old mansion as they were unoccupied, and they looked lovely, just like in their advertising.  There were few guests, but it seems that none of them were accommodated in the nice rooms in the main building.  We had booked this hotel for two nights but soon decided to check out after the first night.  The host was good enough to give us a substantial reduction in price for our troubles, but I would certainly not go there again.  Fort Coulonge and nearby Mansfield have a poor selection of restaurants.  We only found one that we liked - Cafe Downtown.  The nearby Chutes Coulonge is spectacular, and there is a nice bicycle trail near to the hotel.

One-star room in a four-star hotel?

Didn’t quite know what to expect for a group of 21. Couldn’t have been any better. Rooms were perfect and the best part was the common room where we could all gather. appreciated the setup for our meals which were quite tasteful. Staff friendly & attentive. Definitely will be going back.

Pleasantly surprised

We call to book a room and Daniel (very nice girl attended us) we paid premium for a good comfortable room for me and my husband, when we arrived there was no one but an envelope with our name, the room had one small bed for 1 person, no space for luggage to unpack, no trash can, no fridge, no TV, no shampoo, there was NO INTERNET!!! One thing they advertise they do. They never answered the phone again! There was no one else staying in the entire hotel, why give us the smallest room!!! A ghost house hope never have to come back again

Big disappointment 

I have mixed feelings about my recent 2 night stay at Spruceholm. I had chosen Fort Coulonge somewhat at random, looking fort a quiet place with relatively few tourists during the covid summer. The area itself is to be recommended on that front: it is quiet, scenic, and a good base from which to explore rural western Quebec and parts of Ontario. The hotel though...meh.... I guess I had envisoned some sort of luxury accomodations reading some of the more enthusiastic reviews on TA. We were housed in the annex (as were friends of ours who also visited a few weeks later). Perhaps the main house is better, but the annex is bare bones with a shared ktchen, tv room, a petty bare room to sleep in with not much going for it. No atmosphere, that's for sure. We were never met/greeted upon our arrival - our room key was just left by the front door of the main house - and it all felt very impersonal and unwelcoming. Our supper in the hotel restaurant was also basic.  We had read about scrumptious sounding dishes in the reviews but the Saturday night we were there, in August, the menu was very limited and, while perhaps good by small town standards, far from what we had anticipated. Apparently more was on offer when our friends visited in September. The restaurant did have a great country music singer however (for the 2 tables with customers in the large restaurant) and that was fun and compensated for the very ordinary food. Wifi was very poor as was the (common room) tv reception. Breakfast the next morning was good in the well appointed dining room of the main house -beautiful surroundings and generous servings,

Mixed review.....

Stayed there snowmobiling - was ok, restaurant above average!
But upon arrival no one at reception, trouble checking in, run to get someone all over the place - no one there..At check out same thing - can't check out..
I forgot my running shoes and called the following week, they said yes we have them, we'll send them..That's the last I heard. They were almost new, I followed up, no ones answers, left a message(no returns)...nothing..It's really disheartening!!
I would stay the heck away fro the place at all costs, (sleep in your car, you'll thank me honestly!!) I give up on these people, but will never forget!! No is my vote!

Excellent service, clean rooms, excellent friendly restaurant service and food!
We were a group of 16 peoples. We all Stayed at the Toller house and had all private rooms . The house is connected to an antique well conserved home. The house had a full kitchenette and living-room for ourselves. Restaurant was few steps witch was a beautiful rustic restaurant. Big portions and buffet breakfast.

Excellent Vtt group stayover 

First time Out of Town retreat with 2 women and it was fabulous. An hour and half drive from Ottawa and loggings amazing - private room with private bath. Chef Bob prepared amazing meals (lots of my comfort foods). The hall where we quilted was huge. We all had individual tables; there was no problem with power; good lighting and amazing time. Some of us started at 7am and ended around midnight, so got a lot done. Several times the owner popped in to see what we were creating and shared some of her adventures. I would definitely recommend this venue to anyone.

Fall Quilting Retreat

We ended up here by chance but it was a perfect place to have three brothers and wives have a get together while visiting family members in Fort Coulonge. We all had lovely rooms and plenty of common areas for all of us to spend time together and have breakfast as well, just like being at home only lots better because of the amazing folks looking after us - thanks everyone at Spruceholme!

Family Reunion

We adore Quebec and were excited to stay at a new place. The importance of history and what has been preserved in this province adds to it's beauty. The Spruceholme is part of this. The fact that Jane the Inn owner has bought back this family gem speaks of how her heart is truly there and she is willing to learn. This she readily admits. 
We recently attended a family wedding here. Since we travelled with our dog who is 16 we stayed in the new cottages. They are an almost complete work in progress with Cottage 2 having just been freshly painted and awaiting a porch light. The cottages were roomy, nice and cool in the heat and had a nice front porch complete with chairs and an umbrellaed table. Tips: Could use an iron and ironing board. Good thing we brought our own. There is a dresser and night table and a place to hang your clothes. We stayed in Cottage 1 and 2 as a family. 
It is perfect to stay at the Inn if you are at the wedding. We arrived with plenty of time to change for the reception. Yet we were able to have a nice coffee and treat beforehand. There are nice grounds to walk on and the neighbourhood is nice with water right across the street. 
Breakfast was included. Please be respectful of the times the meal is served. 
We want to acknowledge a tireless worker, Diane who ran around doing the work of three people with grace. 
Upon checkout we learned a lot of the history of the town, including the covered bridge knows as "Une Pomme" by the locals that is being restored. Jane noted that the wedding was quite large and she has realized a few things such as that she needed to hire a caterer and staff to properly handle these events. 
The house room were beautifully decorated with high end antiques. Since all of the family and close friends stayed there we saw the many accomodatios. There is something for everyone. 
Jane and her willingness to learn and receive feedback can be on her way to a greater rating and running a great inn.

Sprucing Up the Inn

AS above our 5th time here. I must say that each year has been a very pleasant stay, party and service. 
I just read my review from 2016 and everything I stated at that time is still relative. The owner Jane is an amazing person. Her personal involvement in the community and the Inn is remarkable. Her staff is well versed on how to make guests fell welcome, and they do a magnificent job of doing this. Jane sure knows how to throw a party. For someone looking for a great place to hold a conference or simply have a nice getaway, this would be a great choice.
