First of all, whoever gave this dump 5 stars either works for the owner or has never taken a trip in his/her life!
   Let me start off by saying that this is not a reflection of all Brazilian hotels.  I have had the opportunity to stay at several there (as my wife is Brazilian) and found the hospitality to be for the most part tremendous.. until now.
   The first afternoon, we were picked up from the airport (arranged through the travel agency we booked with,CVC) by someone who claimed to be a worker for the hotel (we later found out he was one of the managers). We then were driven to a small boat that took us to the hotel,which was located on a floating barge in the Amazon with nothing else in site (which actually seemed pretty fun...at first). When we got there, the rude and grumpy  hotel tour guide (who seemed to act like he owned the place) immediately demanded that we go to the first spot on our itinerary from our travel package without having had the chance to unpack or rest up a little, even for a few minutes(not even any "welcome drinks" like was advertised both with CVC and the hotel website).. We were then taken to see an Indian reservation.  While there, we were constantly hard pressured by the guide to tip and buy merchandise (as it would turn out, a common theme) which would have done anyway, as the natives were very nice.
   When we got back to the hotel, we noticed that there was only one other guest (who was pretty drunk) staying there (another small group of 5 would come the day after).  When we asked the hotel manager about this, she claimed it was "off-season" (which was a lie, as we noticed later on the tours other hotels were packed with tourists and some hotel workers told us they never get a lot of guests).  When we got back to our luggage, we noticed bugs,flies, and roaches both in our room and the hallway.  The room was very dirty(especially the bathroom).  The white towels and linen had patches of dirt on them. The whole hotel didn't look swept.
   The food there was HORRIBLE.   Our first night,after the tour. one of the workers said we could eat dinner right away (it was 5:55PM), our nasty guide told him in front of us "make them wait until 7:30!". Another time we practically had to beg the cook to make us breakfast after arriving only 10 minutes later than the starting time and finding no food left. Also, one night for dinner we found that there was only fish available (which we had told the hotel at the very beginning both of us don't eat). When we complained, The hotel manager told us rather rudely "JUST FISH!". The dishes were dirty and the food not cooked right. There was no way of eating anyplace else as we were stranded.
  Another important thing to mention was the hotel was run on there own electrical generator.  They would shut off lights and power (including in our room) without even  telling the guests what time. One night, me and my wife almost fell down the stairs in the dark. Talk about unsafe.
   The original hotel guide left after the first night, replaced by another arrogant guide(who we would find out was another manager of the hotel).  All he would do is change our itinerary to suite his needs. One morning, we waited in the patio-lobby one and a half hours to go on a tour being constantly  told the tour boat was out for gas.  We finally got out of the hotel manager the boat broke down (which we would have waited even longer to find out had we not pressed her for an answer).  The guide the rescheduled a trip to the Indian museum that we were supposed to go on later that day (which we could have went on since the boat was fixed by then) to the same morning of our departure, which meant we had to rush the poor museum hostess. The guide would take us during our tours on side trips to natives (both children and adults) begging for money (something we found out later he wasn't supposed to do).  He also kept on trying to hard sell us on a $200 dolphin tour (which wasn't part of our prepaid package) that we constantly told him we weren't interested in,even as we ate our meals. We found him very annoying, even telling me "don't listen to your wife!" when she suggested I didn't swing on a rope during a rope through the forest (I wasn't dressed for it).
  We would try to voice our complaints about the hotel  but all we would get were answers like "the hotel is only 2 to 3 years old" and "accidents happen" (no excuse considering the money we were paying). My wife was trying to get the phone number/address of the owner to complain from the hotel manager but she was always avoiding the subject, running away from us.
  The last day was the final straw. we were waiting in the lobby for our boat to leave at 12PM, the original time we were supposed to head for the airport(the plane departure time was 3:30PM). Then 1:00 rolled along, we went to go find the hotel manager (who wasn't in the the lobby at all) as we knew it was a long ride by boat and car to get there. We found her in the dining area,stuffing her face with food (a common thread with her while we were there) not caring we had a plane to catch. We told her she better do something to get the boat there or we were going to hold her/the hotel responsible for getting us another flight.  Finally, the boat came at 2PM. They made us board on the beach rather than the dock they had.  Obviously, the boat driver was told to rush to the mainland, as he was was driving so dangerously we were afraid we were going to lose our luggage.We actually broke down in the middle of the ride for a few minutes.We got on land and were taken to a cab driver who had no connection to the hotel.  Thank god for him as he got us there at 3PM with everyone on board already (mind you,domestic flights you are supposed to be at 2 hours ahead of time).
   Please don't be discouraged against going to the Amazon. The Rain Forest is beautiful and the natives are friendly. It's just when you are spending good money for a hotel with no room service or internet, a pool with dirty water, bug infested rooms and other problems to many to mention,you must tell others.  This is the first bad review of anything I have ever written down. The cheapest motels in the world offer better service than this rat hole.
