After looking at 3 lodges in Kanye we were so disappointed and about to leave town ... but we held out and found Motse Lodge + Cultural Village in a tranquil setting at the edge of town and were delighted. A charming friendly lady named Faith welcomed us, showed us the property, and we immediately sat down for drinks in the bar / swimming pool area. Lucky us, there was a cultural festival on that evening and we were privileged to meet so many elegant Botswanans dressed up for a big Friday night. Faith ensured we got a delicious dinner cooked to order, and we sampled some traditional side dishes of morogo (spicy spinach) and mabelle (sorghum). After chatting with several locals we retired to our spacious chalet. The beds were very comfortable and it was a nice relief to have good air-con after the blistering 41C heat. Such a great experience, and not even an hour back to the South Africa border in the morning. This was our most authentic experience during a week of Botswana travel and looking back we were pleased we held out and went to Motse!

Comfy chalet + cultural festival!!

Motse Lodge is well situated for travellers visiting Botswana. It is a lodge managed by the local community. There are bungalows, but we stayed in the tented chalets, all with an ensuite bathroom and toilet. There is a swimming pool, dining room, bar, and huge lapa on the grounds for guests to use.
The facilities are good, as does the location (it is about 3km outside the town of Kanye). But there is a lack of attention to detail and continued maintenance. When we arrived, our bookings of months ago were unknown to the receptionist. There was no water available in the tented chalets and some of the toilets did not work, even after the water was restored after hours. My bedding had the smell of someone who smokes a lot (yough!). The staff had to scramble to put our dinner together which we also booked.
Motse Lodge could be a gem with a little better management, maintenance and attention to detail.
Communications with the lodge is also a problem. Email is the main form, but responses are not prompt.

Lots of potential

I stayed here one night, the first room had no hot water, so I asked about it & they ended up giving me a room with hot water. The room was good & the bed very comfortable, but 2 guys came into my room at 12.30 at night, they were full of apologies & no harm done, but how can this happen ? The place is well over priced should be 1/3 less at least, also the maintenance is lacking altho the rooms were clean. Would I stay here again No not at the price they charge, you can find a lot better value in the area.

Over Priced !!!

Arrived after a drive from Johannesburg. The place was not bad, but we only used the shower,toilets and the camping spot, which was allright. We had diner at the pool in the evening, food was good (steak with chips) for a decent price.

Allright for one night

Stayed for two nights after long trip through Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Expensive given going rates in area. Needed to clean up, lodge had no water, eventually got that going but no chance of hot! Air conditioning did not work. Complained and changed to inside room - everything worked there for a while until the staff used all the hot water. Pool still green and not nice. Duty staff intent on entertaining friends and family and eating all the food (it was the weekend I suppose). Nice barman though, gave wife free glass of wine. Would I go again? Nope, and we've stayed in some seriously basic places. To be honest, if I were the owner I'd not be too pleased about what was going on there, and how little interest the staff took in maintaining the place and looking after guests.
