So let’s start with the positives. The location can’t be beaten, the staff are very friendly. 
The negatives, it’s more of an old youth hostel. It’s very old, poorly maintained and not somewhere you are going to want to spend anytime other than asleep if you go with your mates and want something cheap.  Breakfast is extra and only a very basic continental so think twice.  Overall you need to go in with your eyes open what your going to get so don’t expect any more

Don’t take your wife…..

This hotel is a budget hotel, the staff and food is good, but the only thing was it didn’t tell me we had to pay €12 per person per day, the last time I stayed there is was all included, the hotel is on the main square of Ypres with a great view and location for anything you want to do in that Area.

Liked  · One night stay, to visit a war grave. Location is lovely. The building is old (rebuilt to original post-WWI) so one allows for old quirks. Lunch and dinner at the restaurant/bar were good and reasonably priced.  Room overlooked the market square.  Spacious, all facilities. Comfortable beds too. Staff were considerate and very helpful, especially in carting our luggage up the narrow and rather steep stairs.

Disliked  · The shower fittings defeated us. Had to get staff to show us how to turn on (was stiff and no grip...) Steep and narrow stairs, well hey, we live in an old building and some things just go with the territory.  Staff helped us get our gear up to the room.
Taxis: don't expect a taxi at Ypres station, but Old Tom is within luggage-pulling distance of the station. And for a pre-6am train, no taxi will come (too early, too short) so you will have to tug your luggage back to the station! During the day, taxis are friendly, very informative and do NOT rip you off.

The good news. The staff were friendly, but then
The bad news. You arrive through the restaurant and are directed to your room through a door marked for the toilets. This is where the smell began and travelled with you up a dirty, steep staircase, last decorated in the middle ages, and into Room 13 which should have warned us. Whatever had died in this room had left it's mark. I returned from the car with an air freshener which fought gallantly but failed. Below the TV a bundle of wires hung down the wall. Two electric sockets on the wall flopped about dangerously, and the ancient fluorescent strip light above the headboard flickered threateningly. The entire light unit was loose, secured to the wall only by it's wire. The place was a death trap. Given the managements standards with the room we chose not to risk the food and ate elsewhere. Sorry, but avoid at all costs.

Stay away.

Spent a night here at either end of our biking tour this year. Needs some TLC. Stairs are steep and not for the infirm. That said it's in a great spot, not expensive and the barman, Serge, is brilliant. 3 minutes walk from the Menen gate.

Stayed in this Budget Hotel a few times over the years 3 guys in one room, the room was clean and tidy, the breakfast was great I did go back this year 2022 for a meal which was excellent, I will return next year 2023. 

Budget Hotel but Really Good

Just had a great weekend stay at old Tom fantastic central location and super friendly staff I had a 3 person room which was super value for money. Bar area has been updated and super smart building is clear though out our room was slightly dated but very clear with a new bathroom

Battlefield tour

Been coming to Hotel Old Tom for the last few years, the food is excellent, the service is brilliant they even remember us from previous visits, the prices is average for the city, I will be back next time I am in Ypres

Great again

We where recommended this hotel a couple of years ago and thought we’d try it. The only thing that it has going for it is that it’s central to Ypres, being bang in the centre of the square.  The room was basic. Our bed was on the floor and the top mattress kept sliding off every time we sat on it.  The riser rail for the shower was held together by an Elastoplast and the mat for the bathroom floor was falling to bits. The back of the chair in the room came off when I tried to move it to sit down. The continental breakfast was very poor.  The best thing about this place is the view from the room of the square.

Rooms ok lovely view of the sqare not good for parking. Breakfast is shocking had a cold croissant worst continental breakfast ive ever had wouldnt stay again. Staff polite drinks expensive.not value for money
