The Kaaterskill is the quintessential Catskill destination for families, friends, and those looking to escape for a tranquil vacation. The groundskeeper, Alex, is the nicest and willing to help with any requests you may have. 

The animals are the highlight, with donkeys, piglets, horses, peacocks, and more roaming the grounds. 

If you're looking to spend a long weekend, week, or extended time in the Catskills, cannot recommend this place more!

Love Animals? You're in luck!

We reserved a room at the Kaaterskill for a Saturday night. They wrote us to make sure we knew there was just one king bed in the room (we had children with us). We said that wasn't an issue, but we wanted to make sure the fold-out couch advertised was usable for our child. They said "we will set up a cot." So, confused, we said, but what about the couch? And just to be sure, is there a fireplace and a whirlpool, as advertised. They wrote back and said, oh sorry, never mind, we don't know what happened to your reservation, but we have no rooms available on Saturday. Can you stay with us on Friday (literally tonight) instead? Of course we couldn't -- because our reservation was for Saturday Because the checkin is automated, had we not had this chance exchange, we would have driven two hours tomorrow to stay at a property with no rooms, with no one there to rectify the problem. And now we don't have a place to stay on Saturday at all. Our money is being refunded, but frankly that's not good enough: they wrecked our plans.

Incompetently lost our reservation, only told us the day before

This property could be and should be a gem, but it is NOT!  It is in terrible disrepair, and customer service is nonexistent.  We were extremely disappointed.  Price is totally inconsistent with the condition of the property.

Should be a gem, but NOT!

We booked 1 night in at The Kaaterskill in the middle of May, looking forward to spending a weekend away from the city in a remote and quiet location.
The location was as expected, remote and scenic. However, the room was a total disappointment for us. 
First of all, the water: it stinks of sulfur so badly that you don't want to even wash your hands with it. We had to take a shower after a long hike and it was awful, as the water kept stinking even after we let it run for a bit.  Shortly after even the bedroom was full of the sulfur stench. There is also a jacuzzi in the bathroom that we would have loved to use, but who wants to take a stinky bath? We had to use bottled water to brush our teeth and wash our face since we did not want any of that putrid water in our mouth.
We went on a cold weekend and yet the AC was always on. The thermostat was broken so there was no way to adjust the temperature or just turn it off; when the sun went down, we simply froze in the room. 
We would have even been ok with the uncomfortable temperature and the awfully stinky water but the cherry on top was that our bedroom was side by side with the mechanical room with the AC compressor. The machine was so loud that the wall between the two rooms vibrates constantly. Since we escaped the city to get away from noise, to get to such a remote location and having to listen to a compressor all night long was like a sad joke. 
We called the management, as they are not on site, and asked if they could move us to a different room. They told us that there were no other rooms available (maybe it was true but we really did not see that many other people), that they could do nothing for the AC compressor and temperature, and to just start the fireplace to warm up. There was no fire starter of any kind and no place nearby to buy any, so we just kept being cold.
As soon as the morning came, we left as quickly as possible and we were so glad we had only booked for one night.
Overall, we thought it was a rip off, as the price was high and absurd for what we got. Maybe if you go there and you get a different, quiet room, on a warm weekend and you are lucky enough that the water does not stink anymore, you can have a nice stay. It was not the case for us.

Total disappointment

I was hesitant because of the negative reviews and higher price than similar places in the area but I am very glad I ended up staying here for the weekend! Definitely know what you're getting into - there's a number to call which we didn't need to use but otherwise there aren't really any staff on the property. No cleaners or food service either. The room is lovely - very cozy. Comfortable bed, dead quiet at night. Very spacious and nicely decorated in general, with a cute patio for watching the scenery in the morning. And the animals are the best part!! We brought carrots, apples, wafer cookies and basically spent the whole weekend mostly hanging out with them and going on hikes around the property. Make sure to bring shoes you can walk through mud in! Unfortunately you can't ride the horses but I still enjoyed spending time with them.

 The fireplace is a great addition - we would get takeout and just eat in front of it every night. TV has a Roku so you can watch Netflix and the other streaming service without any additional devices. Wifi seemed fast, although we didn't use it much. The Jacuzzi is amazing, and there is a kitchenette separate from everything with a microwave, fridge and utensils. It's definitely removed from civilization (which is the charm here!) - there's a Walmart a 15-20 minute drive away but otherwise I would try to sort out dinner plans early and bring what you'll need with you. 

The only things I did not like was the water - it does smell strong of sulfur as others have noted. It was fine after running a tap for a good 3-5 minutes so I just took baths instead of shower but it was still annoying when I had to wash my face, brush my teeth etc. Bring some fresh water with you because I definitely wouldn't drink the tap here. Oh also the fireplace does not light with the wood and starter they provided - we had to get some lighter fluid separately to get it to work.

Amazing place to experience nature and farm animals

Was here for my youngest's wedding in this damn covid time. A small event that was made fun with my daughter and her grooms ability to influx fun into it. The Inn itself was out of our price range for the night a $250-270 affair. We asked for an early check in and the staff had our room ready when we got there was very nice. The head of staff Alex was very friendly and accommodating.
The room was very warm though with all the pagan decor everywhere you might get the wrong vibe.
Our bed was very comfortable and the fireplace was a certain plus for our stay!
The cons other than the price weren't many. Unfortunately the water smelled bad! Must have been the chlorine in it. Reminded me of living in Florida, rotten eggs. My wife used the bath spa but because of the smell I did not.
The only other problem we had was the grill that my son in law used stopped working mid-coking I think because the propane regulator froze. Not really the Inn's fault but was a drag just the same.
Wouldn't recommend to the price conscience but as far as a nice getaway it was very enjoyable:)

An expensive yet satisfying getaway

This place has a nice scenic location but that's about it.  The rooms are not terribly functional and have some unusual decor but that is not the problem in and of itself.  The problem is there is no on site manager, no one is running the place.  It is generally in a poor state of repair, the outside has signs of rot and is in missing paint.  The water has a very strong sulfur smell, the general cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired.  I would avoid this place as it seems abandoned. Disconcerting things like exposed wiring that could pose a risk to children are present.

It's a dump, scenic location, poor property

Our room was beautiful. The bed and chairs were super comfortable and everything was very, very clean. There was literally NO ONE there (which was great because we were looking to get away from the crowds) but check in/check out was a little odd (we got an email with scavenger-hunt like instructions to find out room which we thought was fun). The property was nice, and the animals were cute and fun (we brought the Nilla wafer box as instructed in the email and spent the morning feeding the animals from our front garden). 
Our only complaint was the water. It smelled and tasted horribly of sulphur (so much so that we tried to avoid showers as much as possible). I was really disappointed because the jacuzzi tub was beautiful and it would have been really nice to use it, but neither of us could stomach the smell. We called the inn keeper and he said the water filter probably needed to be changed, but it didn’t get any better during our stay. Other than the water, it would have been perfect. I hope they can fix that - if so, would definitely stay again 

Weekend getaway 

I absolutely love The Kaaterskill. I have stayed here a couple of times now, and I fall more in love with it every time! The scenery is absolutely breathtaking, there are so many incredible animals,  and there are beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails right along the property. The Kaaterskill rooms are so aesthetically pleasing and you can tell it is wonderfully thought out, and not to mention SO SO clean!! I would recommend coming here 100%, it is my favorite place to get away from the city, and just really relax and enjoy nature.

Perfect nature filled getaway

Amazing stay! The place is wonderful! I needed a getaway away from the city where I could relax but that it will have a certain luxury standard.

The rooms are amazing, super romantic the decor is without a doubt a plus!
 Our room had an amazing fireplace was super romantic, the fireplace at night and spend a great time in the Jacuzzi was everything that I needed. 

The room is super spacious and the highest quality of furniture surprised me!
The experience of seeing and interacting with animals and walking around the property was wonderful! 
The staff was extremely audacious, they instructed me very well with all the details about the property. 
It will surely be my new weekend getaway I can't wait to go back!!
