We found our Maui home here! 

Things that were awesome; 

View - right on the waterfront. Every night we fell asleep to the sound of crashing waves and woke up to singing birds and more lapping waves. 

Nightly sunset, sipping tea on our private chairs and breakfast on the lanai dining table. Having a fully equipped kitchen was SUCH a blessing. We really had everything we needed. 

Close enough but far enough away. So we were nestled in a tiny nook in between the busy/crowded resorts and the town shopping center. 

Far enough to avoid noise/people, but close enough to have great restaurants, nice grocery store and a great luau offered at one of the neighboring resorts. 

Staff - Brittany greeted us warmly and happily! She really set the tone for a very pleasant stay, we arrived a little late but she still made sure we had everything we needed before we settled in. She was a delight.

Home sweet home

When I book a “resort” room that costs $600 per night I expect a “resort” like experience. This facility is desperately in need of help. I had to book the Honu ‘suite’ to insure we would have a room on the ground floor as my son is unable to climb stairs. The photos were misleading as to the room’s furnishings. Instead of a full size couch there was a love seat that was so badly stained no one would sit on it. The bed linens were frayed from too many washings and the blackout drapes were actually rusted to the curtain rod. We had a patio which was nice but the grounds outside our room were covered with trash. I would never recommend the Makai Sunset Inn to anyone!

Bummer stay

The staff is very kind and knowledgeable, and the inn is cozy and had quaint Hawaiian charm. Tons of turtles and whales.(Whlaes are seasonal of course)AMAZING VIEWS. In walking distance of 4 very delicious restaurants as well.

Wedding/40th birthday

The Inn was clean and comfortable. It is quite old but kept up nicely. Good Mauai coffee provided. Inn needs updating. The ceiling fan in bedroom was inoperable but air conditioner did help. I misjudged distance to wharf area but 2 mile walk was doable. ABC and Safeway a short walk. Mala's is close by for tasty happy hour. I would stay again. Turtles were a plus!

Pleasure trip

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at the Makai Sunset Inn for five nights. I had booked the hotel through Southwest Airlines' website, and received Southwest Rapid Rewards miles for staying there. Maui is the most expensive of the Hawaiian Islands and we wanted something somewhat affordable that was a step up from a youth hostel. We are too old to be sharing bathrooms!

Here are the Pros and Cons to this hotel:

PROS:
1. The hotel manager was very kind. We were checking in late, so he taped an envelope with my info on the office window. He also repaired our shower drain, which wasn't draining properly.
2. Our room had a full kitchen.
3. Great location, in walking distance to a few restaurants.
4. Laundry facilities available on site, for $1.00 to wash and $1.00 to dry.
5. Ocean views from second floor balcony.
6. Cozy sitting area near sea wall.
7. Free beach equipment (boogie boards, coolers, etc) to borrow, as well as beach towels.

CONS:
1. No A/C in our room. I didn't think that would be a problem, since there were nice ocean breezes, but our room got very hot, even with a ceiling fan and a floor fan blowing. I had a hard time sleeping.
2. Very thin walls. We could hear our neighbor in his bathroom at 5 am.
3. Tiny bugs in the kitchen and bathroom.    They were everywhere. 
4. Tight parking spots. Luckily, we had rented a compact car.
5. No beach access. That being said, in Hawaii by law, there are no private beaches. Every hotel and resort must provide a specified number of beach access parking spots. We visited the beach at the Hyatt Regency Resort and parked there for free. 
6. No TV in the room. This didn't really bother us, however, since we were too busy to watch TV most of the time, anyway.

Overall, we had a good stay, but we will splurge for a hotel with A/C next time.

No A/C

Perfect location- bus nearby to go into town or Kaanapali Beach. Had room with lanai. Right on water to enjoy sunsets. Julio is an excellent manager. Rooms are ok.
Kitchen appliances are from 1996, but found out that in June rooms will be remodeled. 18 room- no children allowed, very quiet.

Great location- Great Value

Went to Maui to relax.
I wanted to see and hear the ocean from my room. Makai Sunset Inn was the perfect for both.
If you're looking for a resort experience with all the bells and whistles, this is not it.
If you want a peaceful relaxing experience, low key, with ocean view this is heaven. There are many comfy chairs to sit out by the sea wall and enjoy the ocean, the sunsets, the fresh air. The room was clean, cozy, comfortable and yes, could see and hear the ocean.
Though no beach access on the property, there are a couple of beaches within walking distance. Restaurants and stores are walking distance as well.  
This was exactly what I wanted.

Exactly What I wanted

This is our second time in Maui, first time in Lahaina.  I must say this was the BEST place for us.  Our last visit was on a beautiful golf course and being our first time here, was perfect, but comparing our time now with our last visit, this was hands down the most perfect spot for us.  We are a "no frills" couple, coming from a 'no frills" small, dusty, California desert town and we felt right at home at Makai Sunset Inn.   Our condo faced the  ocean and we loved having a kitchen to cook meals, sit by the window and gaze at the deep blue water, the majestic Island of Lana'i, and the serene sailboats every morning lighting  up with the morning sun.  At 6 am  we sat at our favorite spot off to the right, enjoying our morning coffee, counting  the many  little sea turtles who popped their heads to say "good morning".   We opened our windows allowing the cool ocean breeze to filter through the condo.  It was fabulous!  Baby Beach was a hop-skip and a jump away as well as the adorable  Front Street town where you can walk along the waterfront, catch spectacular sunsets, enjoy fish markets, specialty shops and ice-cream.   What on earth more can you ask for?  We stayed in Condo #8.  We didn't want to leave.  We are counting the days for our return.

Love Love Loved this place!!!

I absolutely loved staying at the Makai Inn. It felt like a little hidden gem of paradise. It’s oceanfront & is walking distance from my favorite Restaurant Mala’s & the iconic Front Street. I will most likely be staying here again.

Best location

What a treasure this place is.  You have many choices of places to stay on this island.
You can choose tourist glitz with all the bells and whistles you might think of when vacationing on a tropical island.  This is a different experience than that.  You feel like you actually live here on this oceanfront property.  Laura, who is a gracious and informative hotel manager, takes the time to personally contact guests to let them know what they might expect in their experience at Makai Sunset Inn.  There is good internet but no television in any of the rooms.  What you have are ocean waves that lull you to sleep, gorgeous sunsets, free parking, a fully equipped kitchenette, a barbeque grill that you can use to cook your dinner while watching turtles or the waves roll in, and a lovely, quiet, relaxing atmosphere.  I have already asked Laura to book my room for next years visit.  The memories will keep me going until I return.
