Very interesting hotel - and very old.  Doesn’t have a reception as such so you’re free to wander and admire the old wooden beams! Lovely warm rooms, very atmospheric and full of character. Set in the historic part of Lincoln ‘at the top of the hill’ close to cathedral and the castle with many old pubs and restaurants very near by. A great destination for a holiday. 

We were a bit apprehensive as some of the recent reviews have been poor . Firstly the location of the hotel can’t be beaten we were attending a wedding and we were literally a stones throw from church and assembly rooms . .
The reception isn’t always manned however the self check in instructions were spot on . The room was large  clean and nicely furnished , the bed comfy and the bathroom lovely and clean and lots of hot water. 
The communal areas too looked lovely although didn’t use . If you want a good value hotel in a superb location look no further .

The cottages are lovely, they have a cosy homely feel to them. Beds are comfy also.

We stayed here for an overnight trip but could have easily stayed longer! Super visit, lovely clean & roomy rooms. Lovely setting to have a drink downstairs. The staff couldn't have been more helpful 🙂 Will definitely go again x

Had a fantastic couple of days visiting family in Lincoln and stayed here, lovely friendly staff, great location in the most beautiful and vibrant old part of the city and lovely comfy beds. So many great places to visit in close proximity. Would definitely come back and stay here again.

Stayed here for the weekend 8th August. What a lovely find indeed, The whole setup is just so relaxed, it's clean & tidy with a great vibe. I can't recommend this place enough. Bethanys a lovely girl too who seems to run front of house. No more Travelodge Lincoln for us lol

Really enjoyed our three night stay . Very close to the lovely Cathedral and Castle, plenty of places to eat, The apartment was very spacious,would return here , Steep Hill was amazing, walked down it but couldn’t walk up it, The Marina is about ten minutes walk away, Well worth the visit ..

Excellent hotel, beautiful decor and friendly staff, would recommend.

Also in a great location with a very nice down the road with a lovely walk down the hill into town, we ate at Brown's pie shop, well worth a visit.

Had a inprontu stop over in Lincoln after visiting Donna Nook. We decided to chose The Bail House in the afternoon. Was a reasonable price for last minute and was OK with parking fee as it was right in the heart of the shopping and eating area of Lincoln. So close to the cathedral. Staff were friendly and we loved the quirky room with wooden beams. Bed was comfy. We enjoyed the guest living room where we ate our own cheese and crackers with a bottle of wine we had purchased from home at the end of the evening. Shame that someone in another room secreted a bottle of wine to their room without paying! Not everyone can be trusted with an honesty box. Will definitely recommend the hotel. 

Charming place to stay with too.s full of character. The staff are so helpful and willing to accommodate your needs. Honesty bar is a wonderful touch and very reasonable priced, a stone's throw away from the cathedral and castle. Will certainly book again next time we visit Linoln, thank you so much :)

Characterful building worth a stay!

closeness to the town's attractions, that is the Cathedral and Castle, quaintness and space, great shower!!

Having looked at the reviews below, it was with trepidation that had to stay at Bail House yesterday.  I have to say my experience does not match the reviews.  When I booked, at the last moment, the receptionist was very polite and helpful.  I received all the entry codes in good time and 
there was complimentary tea and coffee in the lounge on arrival.  I took it into the courtyard as it was a lovely afternoon.  A nice touch.  The room was spotless.  My only criticism would be the noise of the traffic in the morning but nothing the hotel could do about that.  My window opened, hence I heard the traffic.  Superb location.

Lovely place to stay. Brilliant location. Staff are really friendly and helpful. Room was spotless and the bed was comfy. Only downside for me was there no breakfast and you had to pay extra for private parking. 

Visited before covid. So the review date is not accurate.

This 14th century building is very charming and has an excellent location for exploring Lincoln. I booked a four poster room with private bathroom. 
Good points: characterful room, comfy bed, plentiful tea/coffee facilities, beautiful old building, lovely communal lounge, plenty of hot water, clean bathroom, robes provided, location superb, local parking at £9.50 for 24 hrs reasonable.
Points for improvement: the “private bathroom” - which I was assured on booking, AND when I phoned to check, was “next door to the room” - was actually up two flights of stairs, around a corner, and across a landing that had other rooms on it. Didn’t feel very private! Nothing to stop others using the unlocked bathroom, so couldn’t leave any personal hygiene products in there, and had to do the semi-clad run for nighttime wees! Thought I’d grown out of meeting people on the landing in my nightwear 😅. 
Also would have liked to have been able to open the window as it was stiflingly hot, but couldn’t get the window open.

People have mentioned about the lack of staff on site, but it didn’t bother us. We managed the check-in perfectly well, and were happy to see to ourselves. 

Such a privilege to stay in this gorgeous old building; a couple of tweaks/ slightly more honest info on booking would enhance the stay. I see it’s for sale and I think it would make the most stunning family townhouse home! 

Gorgeous building but not the perfect hotel experience

Took almost 45 minutes to get back into the property in the dark as the access code is overly complex - there is no light for the (old) keypad, and the letters/numbers are worn off and difficult to read. God help me if I had actually had a drink or two!

Well located......If you can get in!!

Would stay again. 

Following reading reviews after making our booking, we were a little apprehensive, especially when we found out we were going to be staying in room 5, which has a few really bad reviews. 

However…. It’s a good room to stay in for a night or two. There are a couple of minor issues (hence the 3 star review), but they’re not deal breakers….

The shower is a dribble as previous reviewers have commented, and is in the bedroom rather than the bathroom. The bathroom is low quality with nowhere to put your bathroom stuff. A five pound shelf would be a useful addition. 

There are low beams, lower than head height, so beware on the night time pee run, but again they are original beams from the 1300’s which frankly adds to to charm and the experience of staying in this room. 

Luxury… it isn’t, but unique…. Yes! And that ticks a big box for a night or two away. 

Check in was a little stressful. We booked on hotels.com a week prior to our stay only to get an email the night before to say that we hadn’t paid. We had, and the mistake was at their end, which wasn’t rectified until mid-day of our checking in. There is no manned reception, and you receive an email an hour before your check in time with Cristal Maze style instructions as to how you get to your key and room. But for me, it was quirky and added to the charm of this fantastic building .

I’m pleased I booked this hotel before reading the negative reviews, as we’d have booked somewhere else and missed out on a Lincoln gem. 

Could you leave some biscuits in the room the next time I book please :-)

Will stay here again

I’m not in the habit of writing bad reviews but, having stayed at this hotel previously, we decided to book again as previous visit was fine.  Unfortunately, on the day of our stay, we had to cancel for a legitimate reason. I rang as soon as they were open so they may have been able to rebook the room out. Spoke to a security guard as nobody available, then the booking agency who, in turn, contacted Bail House who point blank refused to defer the booking.  I can understand if I had cancelled completely but I wanted to rebook for a week’s time.  So, I will book alternative accommodation in Lincoln and have to pay another room charge. Would not use them again on principle. Very unhelpful attitude.
