I’ll be honest Leon and Paul are family friends but this is an unbiased review. 
Gorgeous inn with awesome views. We booked for Christmas Day at 1pm. Inn was full but not uncomfortably with friendly satisfied punters. 
Food was sooo good,ample portions. Had to take the cheese board home!
 Do yourself a favour and go eat,stay,walk the valley. Help the guys to keep this absolute gem going. Merry Christmas 🎄 

Gem of a place. You won’t be sorry. 

A warm welcome and exceptional food await this fabulous place We stayed in the Ashbourne room relaxing and enjoying the fantastic view with our two dogs Nothing was too much trouble we will certainly be going back thank you for making the weekend special 

A countryside retreat 

I stayed with two of my team as we were in the area for the Four oaks trade Show. The staff at Shady Oak were helpful right from booking. I asked if we could check in early in the morning and it was early! Around 8.45am. This was not a problem and no fuss, in, and given our keys. It made for a good start. In fact the staff were very friendly, kind and welcoming during our stay. For dinner a few beers and steak. My colleagues had burgers. Good pub food. My steak was excellent. I was main road side and slept with the windows open, it was fine. A few noisy cars but they didn't trouble me. If you are on a roadside you have to expect cars!  The landscape was beautiful, especially higher up in the Peaks. I took my bicycle along, and after the show cycled high into the Peaks National Park. The most stunning landscape I have ever ridden in. The Inn is a good base for cycling or walking.  

Good Stay

Stayed in The Shady Oak last night after a day’s foraging in the Goyt Valley. The room was lovely and had what looked like new carpets in there. It was a bit chilly when we got there as the heating wasn’t on, but there were a couple of hot water bottles provided for us to use, which I thought was a lovely touch and was much appreciated.

We went down to the bar in the evening for some drinks and food and the staff were really friendly and helpful. We ordered the Shady Stack and when it came I couldn’t believe the size of it! It was delicious too, with a decent portion of chips and side salad with dressing. Unfortunately we didn’t get dessert as we couldn’t possibly have fit anymore food in!

The bar was quite busy when we left and our room was directly above, so we were worried it might be very noisy, you could hear the music etc, but it wasn’t intrusive or disruptive at all. The beds were very comfy so had a fab night sleep (was nice to have the hot water bottle too!) The heating was on when we got back up to the room, and in the morning which was lovely. 

Breakfast was provided the next morning. We went down to find the tables set out for the amount of guests staying, with fresh orange and an offer of french press coffee or tea which was fab. The food was lovely and just what was needed to set us up for the day. I wasn’t sure what time breakfast was, so it might be worth printing it on the breakfast menus in the rooms (although, I also could have asked, so not a complaint, just an observation!) 

All in all a very pleasant stay, would definitely stay again!

Lovely stay in the Peak District

There is a road closure which has been a huge problem for the pub but it would have helped if we had been advised of the only route open. On arrival the staff were friendly so we were hopeful that all would be well. How wrong we were. We were shown to the room (Chatsworth) up a narrow staircase hampered by a stairlift. This would be a serious hazard in an emergency as it was the only way out (I think). There were no cups or glasses so we went to the bar to get some. The room was cold. Heating was put on for us in the bedroom but the bathroom was cold. There were two hot water bottles in furry covers and brown towels. The bathroom was shabby and some of the furniture was falling apart. Luckily the bed was very comfortable. We had booked an evening meal. The beer was all “off”. The sirloin steak inedible. We sent most of the meal back which wasn’t queried by staff. We paid for the meal. We believed the room was already paid for. We went back to the room and tolerated the noise from the bar until nearly midnight. By this time we had already decided that we would leave without staying for breakfast. We got to the bottom of the stairs only to find that the only way out was though the back yard where we had previously seen the guard dog. Luckily he did not seem to be there so we left. It turned out we had not paid for the room as we thought but that was resolved later over the phone. This establishment was more expensive than many that we stayed at on our UK trip. It was the worst by a very long way.

Truly awful.

On entering this 'pub' we were shown to our rooms through a group of young boys playing pool who really did not want to move. The staircase was narrow, horrid carpet and half taken up by a stairlift - a complete fire hazard. The rooms were ok-ish but felt grubby and unloved. Then there was the thumping loud bass if the music and noise of the pool table resounding through the ceilings from the bar.
All this was rounded off with the smell of stale fried food that seemed to be everywhere.
We left immediately for the quiet, clean cheaper Premier Inn in Buxton.
The manager seems pleasant enough but needs to maybe take a course in hotel management.

Awful!!

Ordered cheese burger, bacon/cheese burger and onion rings and came to £35. Honestly feel like I’ve been robbed. Onion rings are the frozen ones you get from a supermarket, which you can buy for £1 and they charge £4.50. The “burger” was genuinely one of the worst things I’ve ever eaten, and to charge £15 it is a joke. The meat in the burger was something you get at a footy ground/fair which is normally about £4. The owner came and asked how the food was and when I told him how bad it was, he asked what he wants me to do with it, I asked him to throw it away. No apology or no money knocked off from the bill. This is my first ever review on trip adviser as the food was that bad I felt the need to warn other people. Avoid at all costs.

Well what a great time we spent at the shady oak. Went for a birthday weekend with the family, room was great spacious clean and warm, the atmosphere was brilliant Paul, Leon and staff did everything and more to accommodate us (with a 1year old too). Amazing food and drinks would definitely recommend and will be back very soon.

Brilliant!!

I have just spent one night at the Shady Oak Country Inn and can heartily recommend it! The Inn is extremely clean and comfortable with great attention to detail. My evening meal was delicious and this morning Paul cooked me an excellent breakfast. All of the staff were exceptionally helpful, friendly and professional. It is a real gem of a place with a lovely atmosphere.
