I stopped here to pass the time between journeys and decided not to go elsewhere due to a very  friendly and professional  service from a gentleman named Gavin. 
The layout is spacious, cleanly with a slight vintage feel to the decor. 
I must echo, the friendly service was second to none and I would recommend this establishment to anyone local, visiting or passing by.

I booked this hotel for a single night as it was local to a party I was going to. 
You have to get staff from the bar to check you in , reception worn and dated. 
Was checked in by the duty manager and she was lovely and very friendly... gave me directions to room. The hotel is in serious need of a refurb. I got to my room and I actually stood rooted for a minute or 2 in shock at how awful it was , but the smell ! Was like someone had died in there . The duvet was neatly ironed but I pulled back the duvet and you can tell the bottom sheet had not been changed , the creases were still there from previous occupant. I then pulled over the other side and was a stain that looked like a dried urine stain . I picked my bag up , asked the lady from the bar to come to reception and informed her that I would not be staying and why. She handled the complaint exceptionally well , no questions asked and refunded me straight away . I said I was extremely embarrassed having to refuse a stay and she said not as embarrassed as her. Complete credit to her how she handled the situation. 
The rooms are filthy , worn and smelly ..
The whole hotel needs to be demolished and rebuilt , but as I said , the duty manager is the only thing that doesn’t need changing. 
There’s a premier inn across the toad for the same money ... book that !

A very disappointing stay.

We checked in late, after 9. The receptionist told us there were no bookings when we tried to book in and made us feel like such a huge issue for her. She was rude and sulky and really seemed disinterested.

The room we booked was a double but we were given a twin- in the grand scheme of things no  biggie but would be nice to get what you paid for. 

The room was horrid. Stained walls and carpets. Really old and run down.

The toilets also had a soaked, stained hand towel which was shared by all the guests from the pub and is so unhygienic it makes me want to cry.

Really stay elsewhere if you can, even at £60 it was still a rip off.

These reviews are about the same as when I stayed there NINE years ago when returning from rugby international at Twickenham. Very good staff, beer and breakfast. Dirty poorly maintained rooms. These reviews are accurate, so anyone expecting anything better is fooling themselves.

Hasn't changed since November 2010 !!!!

The hotel was in a great location and easy to find. Great nearby Weatherspoon and 20 minutes walk to the town. Room, although clean, needs a bit of a refreshing. Bath had drip stains but was still clean - can't fault cleanliness. Staff were very friendly and always had a smile. The bar was nice and busy but still with plenty of space to sit. 

Breakfast room was lovely; nice selection for breakfast. However, I am gluten free and I don't feel they did enough. They provided Gluten free bread, which was amazing, but to toast it, I had to put it through the general toaster - which would cause cross contamination. I am also unsure if the breakfast was free from as I was unwell all day.

Still a nice stay.

Friendly visit while sightseeing

I enjoyed my stay here - the staff were genuine and super friendly and accommodated my needs for a quiet room (light sleeper). Rooms a bit dated here and there and could do with a lick of paint but I like the character - it's real!! No BS or Glitz.

Excellent Indian Restaurant - recommend the Rogan Josh with Kashmiri Rice. Wonderful

Friendly Staff, Cheap and Cheerful Hotel. Excellent Indian Restaurant,

Out dated, dirty and cramped “family room”. The decor reminded me of a smelly old granny flat, crumbling and nicotine stained. The bed was horrendous! I woke up with a really sore back during the night. There was construction work going on outside late into the night and I could hear everything from the room up above. It was the worst hotel room I’ve ever stayed in. Found long black hairs in my bed...I’m blonde! Do yourself a favour and book the premier inn 50yards up the road. The breakfast was nice enough but wasn’t enough to stop me writing this review to warn others off!!!

Please believe the negative reviews! It should have a -10 in the ratings!
I booked this “hotel” for a quick overnight stay read the reviews but needed somewhere close for an event. 
Faulty towers is like the ritz compared to this place...
One member of staff (who so happens to be the trainee assistant general manager) was managing the reception and the pub... she was lovely, friendly and very polite.
The Entrance.. occupied constantly if smokers!
The smell of the ash tray in the wall is vile!
The hotel... in dire need of a good clean!!!
The decor could be out of an 70/80s revival
Broken doors ripped carpet “paper borders” hanging off in the corridors... an old building right doors no lift... not a problem!
The smell... hits you in hen you open the door to the stairs!
The bar is beautiful! All shiny and new!

The room... number 39! 
Basic, old, rough window don’t open to let fresh air in... probably would have got the Indian smells from the restaurant below anyway!
Holes in the walls with wiring hanging out!
Lamps hanging off the wall!
Bulbs blown
Batteries defunct in the tv remote
Bath plug was older than me!

But all of the above was just that the hotel has been neglected!

After dropping something behind the bed, pulled it out, lots of hair, rubbish debris, dirty tissue, used phone torch to find my earring, the dead bedbug carcass’ LOTS of them, inspected the room beds and found eggs on the bed base!

That was it, midnight and we brought the only member of staff to the room.
No other rooms available we drove home.

I booked through hotels.com and received my refund. On the night this occurred again the one member of staff was so apologetic and helpful! 
I asked for the Manager to contact me regarding this. I also asked for their last history of pest control, 
The young lady who had been very helpful sent me a copy of the pest control as they had him investigate the room. He confirmed the carcass’ where the only things there. Dead no crawling ones. He did not investigate the eggs on the bed base.
I was informed they where from an infestation 12 months before, this confirms there is a problem with housekeeping. 
As I said I asked for the manager to contact me, there has been no contact with him. So obviously just wants your money doesn’t care about customer service or feed back. It’s a shame as the building is beautiful. The hotel is perfectly situated for travellers, for the train station! 
It’s a no from me!

Bedbugs

Congratulations. In almost 70 years those dry and curled up cheese and Brandon sandwiches were just about the worst I've ever had. How you managed to dry out the watercress so well I will never know.
No doubt my £4.95 round was left over from a function earlier in the week.

Lunchtime Sandwiches

Well, this place does what it says on the tin, so to speak. Location wise, the closeness to the station is perfect and it was a good option to break a long journey home. 

Inside the decor and decorative condition are very tired. But the room and bed were clean and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was also hearty.
