A most charming hotel on a quite remote and small plateau between Poschiavo and St Moritz.  Cavaglia only has a couple of houses but wide meadows, forests, and, surrounded by mountains, some beautiful waterfalls. Once the last train has left, the place is pure nature, with cowbells ringing, birds singing, waterfalls and beautifully clean air smelling of hay and forests.  The hotel is small, authentic and beautiful.  Our room is wood panelled, the beds comfortable, everything is clean (well, we are in Switzerland).  We had a simple breakfast with good coffee sitting outside in the sunshine.  On our first night we also had dinner outside.  Risotto with mushrooms - absolutely divine.  Our second dinner was most delicious too.  The hosts and staff are most friendly, welcoming and helpful.  This is a beautiful and charming place.  It is not the Ritz Carlton - no need for high heels or, even though it gets a bit chilly in the evenings, fur coats.

Charming

We received a warm welcome on arrival despite walking in the rain for a few hours. Our room was a little small but adequate, the décor being what I thought was vintage Swiss with dark wood all around including a wooden double bed that resembled two sleighs side by side and was both very clean and comfortable. I now understand that there were two shower rooms but we were only shown one and with six of us occupying the three letting rooms it was a bit of a wait for the last one in. I did wonder how long you would have to wait if the additional twelve bed bunk room was full. 
We were booked on a half board basis and the three course evening meal was delivered in quick time, sometimes before the proceeding course had been finished. I can only assume they were trying to break some sort of record. 
I found the evening meal very disappointing, the clear soup with croutons came in a small dish, the main course consisting of one sausage about 12 cm long came with three very small portions of polenta and nothing else and the pudding three small scoops of coffee flavoured mousse. I can’t fault the quality, but considering we had just walked 15km with 750m of ascent and 1450m of descent the portions were very disappointing and not what I expected. The other Refugio’s we stayed at (some of which were inaccessible other than by foot or helicopter) during our walk gave good portions of excellent food understanding that we needed to keep our energy levels up for the next day’s walk. 
The breakfast was a little bit better because we asked for more bread as once again the portions were small, the original twelve small slices of slightly stale bread not going very far when there were six of us.  
Switzerland is an expensive place, but the price of this Refugio does not seem justified. 
Overall I didn’t think this was value for money. If you are undertaking a long walk like us I would strongly recommend that you avoid this place unless you are used to very small portions at meal times.
