Beautiful place with kind and helpful staff. One of the best towns in Mallorca with an amazing musical/historical/archaeological history. The local shop is a great place to refuel for anyone doing the drystone way. Full of cold drinks and fresh bread. Visiting Deia was a very nice/memorable experience.

Deia - Can Boi Refuge review

This refuge is run by a private company and as such it is understaffed: I visited the refuge on a weekend and it was nearly full with several families and their kids staying for the night but there was only one staff working! This showed in the quality of the service and the poorly cleaned shower room. I will not stay here again.

Poor service

We stayed at the Can Boi for one night during our hike along the GR 221. On arrival at this hostel it was clear that the receptionist was not very friendly at all. I had booked online fairly easily and without any problems and had expected to get a refund on the sheets as we had sleeping bags. The receptionist was rude and copied and pasted into google translate even though i spoke to her in Spanish and said that it said bed sheets not sleeping bags. So beware! 
The bed in the dormitory was ok but we were the only 2 on top bunks even though I had booked over a month in advance and the beds were not easy to get up to. The shower was cold and you had to keep pressing the button to get running water - this was not what you needed after a long days hiking. There was no cooking facilities so we couldn't cook our own food and there wasn't even hot water for a drink. That was a blessing as we enjoyed the bars and restaurants in Deia! For the same price you could stay in hostel rather than a refugi. Having walked the GR221 I would advise avoiding the refugis!

Another Refugi to avoid

Stayed for one night while walking the GR221. It's a nice, clean building in a good location. The evening meal was good (requested vegetarian) and breakfast was filling if boring. The man working there was obviously trying to minimise his workload - everyone packed into one room and interesting food service but he was friendly and jokey. It would be improved by facilities for washing and drying clothing and lockers. Lights out time observed and comfortable beds. The council booking website worked fine. I would stay here again.

Good cheap option

We stayed at the Can Boi for one night during our hike along the GR 221. 
The bed in the dormitory was comfortable but the shower was a bit cold and you had to press a button every couple seconds to get running water.
We had dinner which tasted OK, but was not freshly cooked.
The hosts were not very friendly and even turned one hiker away, apparently he had no reservation, but since it was low season and not all bunks were occupied we found this very rude…especially since it was getting dark and it had started raining. 
Breakfast was OK but again the host was very unfriendly so we were happy to get back on the track.

OK stay

I dont have good tips for this accommodation. Only one night is enough to have totally ruined holidays. Bed bugs bit me on whole body. Pain and itching  is uncomfortable, it is disgusting.  I wrote back to inform and nobody responded to me.

A gift alias bed bugs

Refuge Can Boi is a lovely building and Deia is a great base. The beds are just fine and on the face of it it's great value.... so what's the problem? Please see my 5 top tips below (and reasons why I marked it down):

1. Don't arrive late if you want to check in quickly: I arrived at about 7:30pm and asked to check in. Since dinner was being served, I was told that it was impossible and that I had to wait for '20 minutes'. After waiting for 20 minutes, I was told again to wait for a further 20 minutes (there were a number of others doing the same).

2. Bring your own water: After waiting for half an hour, I asked if I could have a glass of water from the jug on the check in desk. I was told that it wasn't included because I havn't booked dinner, but that I could 'have just one' - this was approx 150ml of water. 

3. Double check your bill! This is the important one... despite having paid in advance, I was charged again for my bed. I admit that I should have checked whether I had already paid before handing over any cash, but since then I have emailed them 4 times and given 48 hours to highlight what I hope was a mistake and try and resolve the problem. So far it has been totally ignored.

4. Triple check your bill: I stayed in numerous hotels and refuges during my stay in Mallorca and was charged 55cents each night for tourist tax. Well... everywhere except Can Boi where I was charged 3Euros (and told I could only pay in cash). There could be a valid reason for this (perhaps the staff could explain?), but given point 3, I am suspicious.

5. Eat elsewhere: The food actually looked fine (though I didn't eat here) and it doesn't cost much so should be top marks... but on the evening I stayed the guests were looking stressed and complaints were coming thick and fast for incorrect meals / being billed wrong etc. etc. 

I still hope that the billing issues were just a mistake as opposed to staff wanting to pocket a few Euros and it's very possible that they were having a particularly bad evening with the service (the guy was run off his feet and probably trying his best), but this was my experience when I stayed recently.

5 top tips if you stay here

I had a very pleasant stay in Deía here. The staff were very helpful and friendly and looked after me very well, even carrying my rucksack upstairs for me when I arrived. I slept like a dream and continued on my way early the next morning well rested after a simple but tasty breakfast. 

Clean a

We arrived at this Refugio by chance! We were driving along Deia, trying to park our car without luck due to the number of tourists… We could not stand the crowd, shouting, sreaming, when, suddenly, far from everything, almost at the end of the village, down the mountain, we saw this building, isolated from everything, well illuminated… It looked so clean and calm that we decided to park our car and have a coffee. There was no noise around… A couple of locals were playing domino and drinking a glass of wine. You could only hear the grasshoppers while the sun started to disappear behind the hill… While we were having coffee, we asked whether they would have something to eat. “Pan amb oli”. WE LOVED IT! So simple, so fresh. For dessert, fresh watermelon. It was heaven. Nothing could disturb our dinner, the peace. We paid 20 euros for two coffees, one coke, two big plates of pan amb oli with ham and mahon cheese, watermelon and one beer. The best dinner ever. What a wonderful place…
