My recent stay at Umhlanga Sands was nothing short of a nightmare, akin to a week spent in confinement. As a timeshare holder with over 5 rooms booked for my family's annual gathering, I expected a relaxing holiday, but instead, we were treated like prisoners.

The inclement weather and the closure of Durban beaches left us confined to the resort, where we were constantly harassed by security. Despite being a self-catering resort, we were forbidden from eating our own food in public spaces. To add insult to injury, this restriction was especially problematic as none of the resort's restaurants offered Halal options, leaving us with no choice but to dine in our rooms. Due to the large number of family members spread across different rooms, we were unable to dine together in a single room. We got publicly humiliated by Management and Security when we tried to eat our food at the downstairs outdoor area. Even at the pools, we were not allowed to bring our own snacks or treats, and them telling us to purchase non-Halal options from the resort.

Adding to the frustration, we were subjected to a nightly curfew, prohibiting us from enjoying any family game nights outside or even staying downstairs past a certain hour.

We were not allowed to use the outside seating at night, and to our disbelief, the resort staff went as far as switching off all lights, making it impossible for anyone to see anything. This blatant disregard for guest comfort and safety only added to our overall terrible experience.

Overall, our experience at Umhlanga Sands was nothing short of a disaster. We were made to feel like prisoners, confined to our rooms and unable to fully enjoy the amenities of the resort. I would strongly advise against staying here, especially for families looking for a relaxing and accommodating holiday experience.

A week from Hell, treated like prisoners

Amazing resort. The view is amazing. Perfect location. All the staff are helpful, friendly & welcoming. All your needs are seen to. Everything is clean. The entertainment is outstanding. Lovely place to relax & unwind. Rooms are comfortable & spacious however some of the furniture is chipping away so that could do with a bit of renovations. The spa is absolutely amazing. The staff at the spa are also amazing they treat you with so much of care.

The perfect getaway

I had not long arrived at Umhlanga Sands having flown in from Cape Town and I needed something to eat after getting checked into my apartment at the Resort.

 I headed down to Mugg & Bean which is very popular with the holiday makers at Umhlanga Sands and possibly also close by.

I ordered a Toasted Chicken and Mayo sandwich on brown bread.  This was served with a portion of chips.  I also ordered a glass of wine to enjoy with my late lunch.  

I really enjoyed the Toasted Sandwich it was devine.  I did return another day and ended up ordering the same thing!!   

Nice food served by very friendly staff I could not fault a thing.  Special mention to Priscilla she was a star, thank you!



GOOD PLACE FOR A NICE LIGHT MEAL

Cleaning service is terrible…. Rooms are stinking…. Bathrooms are stinking…. Valuables were stolen from the room…. We complained to reception and they said they still need to investigate….. staff we not friendly and not helpful…. A brand new dress and a bracelet was stolen from the room….

We are Timeshare owners at the next door Cabana Beach Resort where we unfortunately had a few unpleasant incidents during our previous visits with the last straw of such during our stay in June 2023.

Subject to that, we have decided to stay at the uMhlanga Sands Resort during our next uMhlanga holiday. 

We have not stayed at the uMhlanga Sands for more than 10 years but what a pleasant surprise we experienced, from arrival till departure, 7 nights later. 

This resort is definitely the most precious gem on the uMhlanga coastline. It is in a pristine condition with a variety of amenities which include 3 swimming pools, 3 restaurants, a cocktail bar, a new and state of the art lounge facility where drinks and food is served. The children's entertainment is safe and includes a Milky Lane, additional to the 3 restaurants. 

The three restaurants serve excellent food and drinks from early to late to the convenience of the hotel guests and there is also a little convenient store, open until 22:00 when you need to do some emergency purchase from its wide variety of stock.

The management team, all the resort staff as well as the restaurant staff were very friendly and assisting and went beyond and above to accommodate any needs throughout our stay.

Well done and thank you to the Sands' Team for an enjoyable stay at your resort.

uMhlanga Sands the best resort on the uMhlanga coastline

Royal treatment at its best! 

To sit next to the pool, children being entertained while you enjoy the view of the ocean! And then you just ask Mthobisi (fabulous waiter from m&b) to bring you a beer! What is better than to just lift your hand and a waiter standing next to you while it feels as if you are on the beach!

The beach is just a few steps away.

The hotels general manager, Anthony, is all over the place and making sure everyone is enjoying themselves. 

And then the entertainment team! Wow, wow, wow! Jacky, Knowledge, Donald, TK, Sipiwe etc! They are amazing! Not just for kids but for adults as well!

This is my home away from home! What a pleasure!

Fabulous service

Our 7 day vacation was interrupted with both our children (4 years old and one year old) getting sick.  The service from the hotel and housekeeping was so kind.  Housekeeping provided us with clean linen two very early mornings.  

I especially want to thank the hotel manager who went above and beyond expectations for us when my one year old got sick in the early morning hours.  We honor you for your excellent service.

All the restaurant staff was very welcoming and friendly.  The food was good.

The kids loved the kids zone.  The staff working there was so kind and gentle with the kids helping them with the creative activities provided.

Everything in the hotel was clean.  Their room cleaning services was also excellent.

The hotel renovations was a bit disruptive since we had to stay in the room while the kids were sick but the hotel personnel did offer to relocate us to a different room trying to accommodate us.

Definitely a family orientated hotel that we would visit again.


Excellent service received 

We have been returning to this establishment for several years and every year we are delighted to see the improvements made to keep the establishment current and maintaining its leading standard amongst this sort after upmarket coastal strip 

Fantastic upmarket offering

Room was not cleaned properly, had to call reception to send cleaning staff to clean the room, shower door doesn't close properly water seeps through on the floor while you shower flooding the floor, lack of attention regarding maintenance, couches in the room were stained and dirty, the sheets and pillows did not have a clean fragrant laundry smell, carperts in the passage did outside rooms did not have a clean smell, very musty, definitely not an inviting experience 

Unpleasant hygiene and lack of maintenance

Very cost effective price for a priceless view. Two bedroom two bathroom self catering best for a family of 4. Spacious lounge with balcony and kitchenette. Sleep with the view and sound of waves crashing. Best therapeutic sleep remedy ever.
