Public toilets don't flush. Advertise room service but no. Found cockroach in my food. Sent my meal back 3 times today. Wrong order. Steak overcooked. Restaurant cobwebs. Overall feeling of uncleanness. Much left to be desired!! I did not enjoy my stay and will not return

Most unpleasant

Hornbill is definitely the type of place that goes the extra mile for their clients making you feel like part of the family. We hope to see them soon again. Some of the best food ive ever had, Steaks and Burgers and Milkshakes are a must.

You are part of the family 

If you are looking for a family run, exceptional service and beautiful property this is the place to come to.  There are dogs on the property, so for an animal lover I would recommend that you meet Hashtag the friendly staffie on the property, his presence was such a delight! . A pool on site as well as a restaurant with a wide menu variety were nice additions. I will definitely stay here again in future.

Family run

What a beautiful lodge and a relaxing weekend away. Situated one hour out of Johannesburg, it was a pleasant surprise that a place so scenic was so close. It was very affordable and delivered in terms of service and accommodation. Very family oriented with a lot of flexibility. There aren't a lot of activities at the lodge, however, it is centrally located so you can drive to other parts of Magaliesburg for the activities.

I would definitely recommend Hornbill for an affordable and revitalizing weekend away. You can hike, get a massage and star gaze while you're there.

Extremely friendly

We booked at Hornbill Lodge in Magaliesburg for Valentines Day. What an awful experience. The Lodge is so not looked after. For Lunch we ordered a beer, wine and food. My beer was not even cold, I asked the waiter for a cold beer and the reply was, sorry the fridge is broken. I then ordered a steak, first a Rib-Eye steak, sorry says the waiter we do not have it in stock. I replaced it with a Rump. It looked very nice on the plate but you could taste that the steak was grilled in a same pan where onions were done in. We then finished lunch and went to our room. OH MY GOODNESS, it was awful. The smell in the room was horrific, very bad experience and will never recommend this place to anyone. The lodge caters for people that work in the area, we saw 2x Transnet bakkies overnighting there as well.

Shocking

We have booked for 2 nights at Hornbill Lodge, and all I can say is what a disappointment. The room smelt and felt dirty. Nothing like the advert. Also states as a 4 star lodge at the entrance of the lodge, but apparently is a 4 star B&B, which is also impossible with aircon not working and no bar fridge. The staff that works at the lodge is not presentable, walking around in track suits and flip flops. Nothing about this was 4 star accommodation. There was a big group of people, 2 rooms away from us that was playing loud music and partying. We went to lay a complaint with Cobie and he was not open with a solution. Said we are the only people to complain and that there is nothing he can do about this. 
 We asked for a refund as this is not worth the money we spent and he refused and said we should sort it out with Daddy’s Deals. He refused to let Daddy's Deals refund us, as we checked in already and left on our own terns (not taking in account with everything that is wrong with this place) Also accused us of lying and called us racist when we complained. (which we are the same race - so doesn't make sense) worst place with the worst management!!

Worst Experience ever at Hornbill Lodge

Our car club visited Hornbill Lodge on our monthly breakfast run. The setting among the trees is beautiful, with a lovely view of the river from the covered restaurant deck. The breakfast, however, was a disaster characterised by cold food, poorly cooked eggs, cold and soggy and/or burnt toast, burnt carrot cake and service so slow that calling it glacial would be kind. Not to mention the only coffee offerings being instant coffee granules and instant cappuccino from a sachet. Elaborately decorated milkshakes do not make a good restaurant - good food, good coffee and good service do. Any cook who can't make a good omelette or produce a slice of warm toast ought to consider a career change. In fact, the cook and the manager ought to be fired. What a pity - any establishment blessed with a setting like this should be a gold mine. We shan't be returning in the foreseeable future.

Lovely setting - pity about the appalling restaurant...

This is advertised as a dog friendly venue. However a fat old mongrel staffy attacked our dogs, as his owner (also of the venue) reluctantly pulled him away. We were charged R80 for a beer and a cider. Very overpriced - seaks are over R220 ! The place has a "hillbilly" feel to it, and is tired. You can do much better in the area , give it a miss........

Hornbill Lodge is such a terrible place for one to be, we couldn't even spent the night. We found the rooms to have a terrible, rooms to be extremely cold and old uncomfortable furniture , dirty linen on the bed, dogs all over one would swear those dogs sleep on the beds. To make things worse, unfriendly owners who were not even concerned that we were not willing to spend the night at their horrific place. I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone
