If I was to stay here again it would be with several comedic friends with whom I share a kind of sense of humour and certain drinking habits.

As you enter the town a sort of gloom descends on one, the kind of foreboding that only comes with experience of fraught stays in new locations. The fact that I was travelling with two of the lovely Agafanova sisters only made it weirder as they scanned the horizon for some kind of relief, stoics as they are they say nothing and just look puzzled but unperturbed, natives to this world they are, it is what it is!

We checked into hotel "tak it or leave it" having been reassured that the music will stop at eleven, ah, I thought someone was giving birth or that the local Marquis de Sade was at his doings!!

We went to check the railway station for a train back to Saint Petersburg that evening for Nat, we enter the station at street level and paddle through the cement and back out to the upper level, of course the copious signs everywhere warning us of works and the immense barriers to bar our way made us feel rather foolish.

On entering the upper lobby, sort of open area with animals and various detritus over the floor I sensed we had wandered into a horror movie, every one of those people could pass without make up for horror/crash/torture scenes, Speilberg could save a fortune by employing the locals as extras, and just think of the time saved for the gory scenes, they all seem to have interesting skin conditions, vodka effect maybe??

We toddled off and sought refuge at a cafe, usual tosh.  We retreated to the square to enquire of buses and popped into a small supermarket named Lime, really really good, a great range of food and well, some interesting vodkas, Putinka (from you know who) and the best was Belochka (squirrel) with a picture of said animal on the front with a face just as demented as those in the train station and a slogan that when translated means "I'm here!" Think pink elephants!!  When going through the checkout I spotted yet another Amityville extra, he followed us outside to the bus waiting area with his wife, as he stood in front of the bus and read the destination on the front of the bus he turned to said wife and proclaimed "son it's here" we can assume he has seen a few squirrels in his time. Ya Prishla!

Marks out of ten, on entering minus 3, on leaving lets say a tad higher.

Oh yes, forgot, back at the hotel another squirrel lover who had been in attendance to the wedding going on was almost incapable of standing but continually managed to fasten his lips onto his poor unfortunate ladie's mouth.

If you need a filter, be warned that small Russian towns are a nightmare even for seasoned travellers, they have no norms or reasons to be cheerful, forgive my sweeping statements but having spent 18 months here it wears pretty thin. Grrrr!!

Breakfast was another marvel, we all (about 10) sat in the dining room waiting for something magical to occur, yes, in came a lovely lady smiled and said food was that way with a kind of look that said "do you think we serve food in the dining room?"  Such hilarity, if service without service were an Olympic event Russia, the field is yours, the ways in which you can best serve yourselves is without enumeration, I never saw such intransigence in my life.

The best bits of said town - Puskin in one direction and Kronstadt in the other.  May Saint Petersburg beckon me once more.

Lomonosov - hotel Gordon Bennett

I travelled to Lomonosov with my colleague in autumn of 2009. We had chose this hotel due to its proximity to Sidorovskiy Kanal where we intended to work. Also it was close to railway station, and offered rooms at reasonable prices. We hadn't booked any rooms in advance, and on arrival we've been offered two so called "junior suites". In fact, these wasn't junior suites, maybe the standard rooms, but not the junior suites at all! My colleague was lucky: his room was equipped with ensuite shower and WC, but my 'junior suite' was equipped with shower only, but the WC was shared with neighboring room!
