It was an academic visit for me to JINR at Dubna which is a city crazy of doing nuclear physics research. And the Dubna 3 hotel was just perfect for an academic visitor like me. I  shared a double bed room with my colleague. The room was sufficiently clean with a small size toilet with heating.  We opted for a room with kitchen facility, there was one hot pot and just one kettle to heat water to prepare tea/coffee and a small size refrigerator. They don't provide any utensils, but we could manage to buy utensils in a near by departmental stores (just opposite to rail line). The hotel is on the bank of the river Volga. If you can manage to have a room at the top floors (>8) in the back/river side of the, the view of the river is just fascinating.

Most of the hotel staffs does not speak english. Google translator was just okay for us to communicate with them. They accept international credit cards; but we found many banks nearby where you can exchange US dollers/Euros to rubble. It's better to travel Russia with US$ or Euros than any other currency. The banks offer good conversion rate, 1.4 times than in the Moscow airport !
Wi-fi quality is okay from the room, but in the evening when many people start using, it sucks! The buffet breakfast (free) offers simple European style food. We took lunch one day in their restora and found it good with reasonable cost. We found many people from Dubna comes for dinner/drinks at this restora.
A double bed room with kitchen cost ~ US$40 and we didn't have any problem with the quality of sleep.
Dubna is well connected  to Moscow by train (~ 3 hours by fast trains), and the hotel is about 10 minutes drive from the Duban rail station and less than half an hour by walk. JINR is also less than half an hour walk from this hotel.

A modest hotel

two nights in this ... hotel. the chamber is quite small but didn't have been renewed since staline ! if you want to really have a unique experience, try this hotel. the breakfast is also totally from the soviet union . it's really worth the experience.

Near the river. A refurbished hotel. The room is small. Drainage problem in toilet was fixed after one day. Rudimentary toiletries. Could do with a tea kettle in room. TV has a few English news channels. Good free wifi. Limited options at breakfast.  Quiet. Nearby supermarket, pizza bar. Poor cellphone network.

Good place for a short trip

Dubna is a lovely little town on the Volga with an interesting history as a center for nuclear research. As my Russian friends who are well-acquainted with the area tell me, much from that era is preserved as it was, and the locals have put tremendous effort into uncovering deeper parts of their past. 

This means, however, that the town is lacking in modern hotel accomodations. We stayed at the Dubna 3, and our friends stayed at the Dubna 1. The experience you have at one or the other appears to depend on what room you get. Some have fairly up-to-date bathrooms with enclosed showers, for example, and some do not. 

The Dubna 3 was fascinating for its state of preservation. If you find period design interesting, than you may be quite charmed. Rather than the utilitarian look you might expect, many of the details are lovely and are more "Mad Men Season 1" than "gulag." But in other places, the hotel is showing its age. The carpet in our room was old and stained, and the beds and bedding left a lot to be desired.

I got very little sleep our one night there not only because of this but because in the middle of summer, our room was hotter than the outdoors. Opening our windows helped, but I was woken up at regular intervals by passing trains. 

In short, I could deal with it for a day but was glad to head back home to my memory foam mattress in Moscow.

An interesting Soviet hotel, though I can't say that I slept well

I stayed there for 2 weeks (in May 2012) as it was school science camp and because of BI program (connected with JINR) we didn't have to pay for the rooms. I stayed in twin room, it was big with two beds, two desks, two chairs, wardrobe, bedside cabinets, small kitchen in an anteroom and bathroom (toilet, washbasin, shower). Although outside was about 20'C in the room was really warm, it depends on a person.. it can be hot for the others. My friend has been living there for over a year (college pratics) and he said it'd been hot in winter as well (no AC). Design is old, furniture is old... generally everything is old. We were located in 8 rooms in total and in two or three of them cockroaches appeared. In our room were warmtraps with poison inside so maybe because of that no cockroach visited us (and we didn't find any inside traps). There are elevators, few people speak English. As I am young and stayed with peers it was fun and I had great time but in general conditions are very disappointing. It's very calm and quiet inside. Although you have to point out that this is Russia :) There is quite close to supermarket. I haven't seen any restaurants but we didn't walk around the city. Pretty views from the window (hotel just next to the Volga river).
