Brekke Gard Hostel

The view was absolutely amazing - so peaceful after the traumatic experience of MSC cruises (do not book).  This hostel was well placed with amazing views, pristine white bed linen and towels, very clean rooms, including the communal lounge/kitchen (fully equipped you only need to bring your own food!) and bathroom (bliss, underfloor heating), I can thoroughly recommend this hostel.  I cannot thank you or praise you enough for your extreme kind hospitality.  Thank you so much for taking me to the train station, yes I did make it onto the train - beautiful views all the way to Bergen!

Flam is absolutely beautiful and the perfect location for this lovely relaxed hostel. We had a complimentary upgrade from bunks in the hostel to a private apartment and it was a wonderful place to stay. If travelling to Flam on the train I would highly recommend staying the night here rather than heading straight to gudvangen or bergen as its a beautiful and unique place to be.

I was a little worried by other reviews but as a family with two kids this was the best value of the limited options, and I was pleasantly surprised. We booked a family room and were put in a room upstairs in one of the white houses near reception, the room had four single beds and a basin. First, it is a hostel not a 5star hotel, it is about a 15min walk from town, and you can hear your neighbours and squeaky floors.  If you are ok with that, then you'll probably love it like we did. Here's why... 
The setting is up the valley so its quiet and away from the very touristy port of Flåm. 
Kitchen was well equipped and spacious with lounges and dining table.
Beds were very comfortable. 
Bathrooms were modern and excellent. 
The place is peaceful and has character. 


I had the cabin/chalet no. 10 which is pretty nice since you have your own room (close to other rooms, so it can be noisy if your neighbours don't have any respect, like the ones who were there that Saturday). You have a key to your room, access to the kitchen/livingroom and there is two bathrooms. Everything was clean and neat. Nothing to dry our hands, tho. You need to walk 20 minutes from Flåm center to get there but the countryside is way more interesting than the city itself. ;) You can see Brekkefossen from there and there are beautiful Highland cows in the field. 2 points for that! The price is really good especially around that too tourist area. Tusen takk!

We stayed here as it was a cost effective option for Flam but it is very budget. You have linen that you collect on check in at reception and the shower was falling off. But if you can get past that and think of the positives it is a real gem. 

It is a 300 year old farmhouse and although the floorboards are wonky it does add to it. The major downside is you literally hear every movement and it's not very well signposted that noise has to be kept down by 10.30pm and we had people up on the kitchen until midnight!! I could even hear the phone alerts in the room next to us and every turn they made in their beds. You feel like you have to be very quiet. 

Location is good with lots of car parking and about 10-15 min walk into the town. It's only 30 mins to walk to the brekke fossen viewpoint. Reception is probably 10 min walk away or a few mins in the car.

It’s a short 15 minute walk from the train station which is also the port. Through amazing countryside. 
  There seems to be a few different types of accommodation here. We were put into an old converted barn. We had a double room which the bed was big and comfy. 
  There is a kitchen to cook food but make sure you bring it with you there’s not a lot to choose from in the whole of Flam itself
  The wooden staircase creaked noisily and constantly as people went up and down but it died down about 10.30
   There is a waterfall behind the hostel with amazing views from the top if you can manage the climb
 The guy at reception was very nice very helpful. And you can buy coffees (very good ones) and pot noodles from him.

Really nice cosy room in the hostel with lovely views towards the surrounding mountains and waterfall. 
Easy and flat 5-10 minute walk into the centre of Flam.
Beds were super comfy and the showers were very good.
Room could have used a better clean as there were a number of dead flies on the windowsill. 
Be prepared to hear a lot of your neighbours as the walls are extremely thin.
Kitchen is well equipped though I think it would be nice to stick a packet of coffee in there given the short stay lengths-not really worth buying a whole pack yourself.

· Comfortable beds, cheapest place to stay in Flåm at the time, kitchen was clean, bathrooms were clean.

 · Due to the fact that the buildings are old and historic it’s fairly loud but everyone was quiet at a respectful time. It ran out of toilet paper and paper towel in the bathrooms. Check in and out process was a little unclear to me. I never officially did either because the staff weren’t around.

Cheap place to stay in Flam

This is hostel accommodation and not hotel or air bnb and converted from an old farmhouse. Having said that we found the accommodation quite acceptable. Check in is actually at the Brekke Gard  apartments, which look like little white cabins and is just before the hostel (the red building).  There you are given your bed linen, towels and a key to your room. The room we were in was very small and on the first floor, stairs are very steep. Bathrooms are shared. You can hear people move around on the wooden floors and although it was booked out, people observed the 10p noise rule and it became nice and quiet. Being able to open the window to the view and the waterfall at the back of the hostel was lovely and it was nice to be a bit removed from the crowded and touristy part of Flam.  This was a lot better priced than the exorbitant hotel in town. We ordered a cab because of luggage and I’m not sure if there’s some sort of fued with Brekke Gard and the taxi company, but the driver was grumpy as hell. Said the Brekke Gard had their own shuttle service. Not true!  Find mostly the taxi drivers in Norway are a brusque lot anyway. 

Hostel Accommodation 

The accommodation was very clean, however we thought we had booked 2 double rooms and were all put into a room with 4 single beds. It was over the kitchen area which was noisy as the floor was not insulated in any way, and the toilet on our floor was just outside our room with a faulty lock which rattled and made a noise when using the toilet which woke us up a few times. Be prepared it is a 1 kilometre walk from the port/railway station and shops/cafes which was fine for us as the weather was dry, but it would have been a miserable walk in the rain. We investigated a taxi but it was 200 Kr one way. Overall, it was value for money, but I don’t think I would choose it again.
