We were recently in Huntly for a family funeral with our adult daughter and 12year old son. We only needed 1 night accomodation but the 'sell' was much more inviting than the actual room!! We had a 2 bedroom unit on the 4th floor. Large, spacious room. Amazing views. Not much else to rave about though! Pipes and connections were visibly held together with tape; the 'potplants' were dried fern tied at the stem and plonked in a pot; stains on the carpet; marks and scrapes on the wall..just a tired and uncared for environment!! Such a disappointment considering advertising of this property and especially the potential of what Hillside can be!! The price we paid for 1 night(apparently with a discount as well??!!)definitely did not reflect what we got!! If you are happy to overlook some of these flaws then you'll be ok. 

What a let down!!!

We were excited to book a night here, have always wanted to come up & finally got the opportunity.  Sadly it was lacking in nearly all areas, & certainly does not meet the criterias described by the hotel or reviewers.
Room was huge & clean, with an electric jug & fridge, checkin was fast - but I think we may have been the last of a hand full of guests only.  Otherwise room was drab with extremely budget dated decor & furnishings - in fact there were picture hooks on the walls but no pictures. No headboards on beds, it is winter & wet, yet linen was cold & no electric blanket. Bath Towels provided were tiny (large hand towels) they were very thin & extremely course - nasty on skin. No toilet roll holder, hook for hand towel was broken so had to hang on door handle.
Restaurant: very limited hours & food, we were the only patrons, selection was very ordinary chinese only - definitely no frills!  In fact water dispenser was AWOL, no other drinks of any description (alcoholic or non) with the exception of warm tea - self service.  
To be sure, it was an experience! 

Dissappointment

Good view, food and service, nice people, close to nature. We were so enjoyed the place. thanks. The fish was catched by the staffs themselves, yesterday, fresh and  delicious. Hope to back the place, again in the future.

Stunning view, and throughly enjoyed time away with my partner. Unfortunately this was the  only highlight of the stay. This place is not a resort and is in state of not knowing what it actually is. We were the only people to visit. Sadly the place is in need of an injection of tlc and money spent to bring it back to its once glory days. To be greeted by a guy on his phone in the dark at reception was a tell tale sign of things to come. No warmth or enthusiasm. The rooms are a great size but once again needing to be refreshed. Breakfast was cold and required to be reheated in the microwave. The fridge did not work and there is no sky tv provided. We’d love to return one day as it has huge potential but will hold off until things are addressed. The restaurant is not open for service or fully licensed as advertised.
To hear that rooms are being offered at $360 over fieldays may assist with cash injection. We wish the owners well for the future. 

Night away

We were the only guests staying at the hillside hotel. It appears to be shut down on a permanent basis. We made an online booking, but when we arrived the only member of staff there told us the hotel was closed. The Chinese man then checked and found our booking. It would seem we had slipped through the net by making a reservation. There were no facilities available. Such a same as it must have been wonderful at some point. Couldn't get to the bottom of what has happened here.

Hotel Closed?

I was transiting the area when I stayed here, I opportunistically chose this hotel.

I was impressed by the location and the views - I was expecting it to be a very expensive overnight stay, and was very pleased when I found out the price. 

Room was impressive (sadly to dark when I left in the morning to see the view). Very clean with very pleasant staff. Sad that the restaurant had closed by the time that I got there, but no matter. 

If I hadn't have needed to be in Auckland early the next day, I would definitely have stayed another night (at least).

The next time I have free time in the North Island, I will come out of my way to stay here, and bring my family. 
I cannot recommend highly enough. 

Had a wonderful stay here, far too short and will definitely come again!

We got married in this wonderful spot. Rosemary and Kris did a wonderful job in making the day flow smoothly even when we changed our minds regularly. Staff have a friendly welcoming down to earth manner. 

We had guests with coeliac and other allergies/food requirements and the chef catered for them well. Food outstanding.
