4 years ago I stayed at Backhome Fez and this May back to Fez I had no doubt: let’s go back to Backhome, definitely! Tonight I was about to write this review and the first thing that came to my mind it has been: “Backhome is really like a home”. I opened the Tripadvisor app and I surprisingly find out that 4 years ago I had wrote a review and I didn’t remember about that. You know what? The first sentence of the other review was “Backhome Fez is really like a home”. 4 years later people who work there have changed but the spirit of the hostel is still the same! They are super kind, they make you feel like at home, they help you, they offer lunch (or dinner) to their guests three times a week and they are always there for you! Thank you so much Laid, Zauhir and Mohammed! I hope to see you soon!

Backhome is like home

This is a small hostel with only 6 rooms: 3 private, and 3 dorms with 8 beds, 4 beds, and 4 beds, respectively. I liked the homey feeling, and Laid and the rest of the staff were absolutely amazing — they invited hostel guests to join them for Iftar every day during Ramadan. The Wi-Fi was great, and the showers were hot with good water pressure. The 4-person dorm room only had one socket, but there was an extension block that had four plugs. The location of the hostel was perfect — it’s tucked away on a quiet side street very close to the medina! The guests here were also awesome; they tended to be slightly older travelers with an earlier bedtime, and I ended up meeting two of them in other cities later on during my trip.

BUT let's get to the bad stuff: 
-There is a common “smoking room,” but unfortunately it is completely walled off and has no windows. 
-The riad is very small and doesn’t get much sunlight. Additionally, the hostel rooms and bathrooms are small as well. Mostly, it would be nice to have a little more room to hang out in!
-You have to pay 10 MAD for a towel, and though small lockers were provided, you need to bring your own lock. 
-I paid $14 USD per night for the 4-bed dorm room, which I thought was a bit pricey. It might be cheaper if you don’t go through Booking.com or Hostelworld. And the hostel only accepts cash payments (though there is a reliable ATM very close by).
-The worst part, however, was that I booked a 3 day/2 night Merzouga desert tour for 180 euros through the hostel. It was expensive, but I compared prices online beforehand and it seemed reasonably fair. However, the tour was HORRIBLE and a complete disaster. I was supposed to stay with a nomad family in the desert the first night, but the hostel called me 5 minutes before we arrived and told me it was too windy, so they stuck me in a budget hotel 2km outside of the city of Merzouga (so I couldn't even walk to a cafe or anything) for nearly 24 hours doing no activities. The only activities I ended up doing were a dinner at the desert camp the second night (the bonfire got cancelled) and a touristy camel ride the following morning (the camels were overbooked so we had to wait until after sunrise to ride them in a less-beautiful part of the dunes). The hostel promised me the bus would stop at Ourazazate and Ait Ben Haddou, two huge attractions in the area, on our way to Marrakech from the desert, but it made no stops except at overpriced tourist cafes for coffee and lunch. The hostel stay itself was very good, but the tour experience left me sour about the hostel because it shouldn't be promoting such a horrible experience. I would not recommend any tour run by the hostel. 

Great hostel with lovely staff, but do not sign up for any of their tours!!

Great stay, really nice authentic hostel near the medina with a really helpful host. Laid always kept on top of things organising trips, providing advice and an endless supply of mint tea. Really good company here and a nice vibe. Would stay again.

Really nice host and authentic experience

The host was very hospitable, welcoming, and nice, which made our trip very easy and enjoyable in terms of planning transportation and trips.  The rooms were clean, the staff were lovely, I’d definitely recommend staying here!

Felt well taken care of 

Mouad was an amazing host, showed us everything around in Fes and gave great advice. His enthusiasm made our experience in the hostel even better. The hostel was clean and the fans kept it cool in the heat. Dinner was delicious too!

Amazing hosts

We stayed in Backhome Hostel Fes at the end of July and from the very onset were greeted by Mouad, who helped us with every aspect of our time in this beautiful city. The hostel had perfect working WIFI, fans in each room, and had a nice living space for sitting down with tea or for a meal. A cool feature was this small room, which had names of guests from all over the world and was the perfect space to lie down, relax and converse. 

Mouad was extremely helpful during our stay, acting as a concierge in recommending us places to eat, activities to do, people/areas to avoid and the prices of taxis/activities/tours to ensure we didn’t get scammed by the local hustlers. He and his staff cooked us a delicious traditional dinner and breakfasts each morning - a personal highlight of our time in Fes.

Very homely and welcoming stay

My stay here was not a pleasant one, of which other guests agreed. I stayed here to volunteer for 1 week, but left after 1 night due to concerning behaviour from the owner. He would brag about how he slept with various female travellers staying, and then told us guests that we couldn't talk past midnight, despite the family staying next door loudly talking and laughing until early morning hours.

The hostel itself has no natural light, and doesn't have any activities for the guests to enjoy in the common area. Myself and 3 other people checked out early due to the unusual behaviour displayed by the owner.

Intimidating owner and dingy hostel

I stayed at BackHome for a second time after returning to Morocco, and cannot recommend it enough. Really amazing owner and staff, and great location too. Finding a hostel as a solo female traveler was tricky, but this one is really safe. Waj and Mouad are super accommodating, and can help organize tours of the Medina or day trips to places around Morocco. Anytime I had questions about where to eat or what to do, they had amazing recommendations for me. There’s free dinner three a week (Waj and Mouad are fantastic cooks) and free breakfast daily. The space itself is really neat too, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Really loved my stay here, would not have enjoyed my trip nearly as much without this place (:

Love this place

Backhome Fez exemplifies what it means to be a well run hostel. Waj and his team do an excellent job of providing a fun and welcoming hostel for anyone looking to really get to know Fez. The vibes are great with free vegetable soup nights multiple days of the week as well as free breakfast, good wifi and solid sleeping arrangements. Bathrooms were in good shape and it really is a neat building. On top of this, they offer excellent tours to the Sahara, Chefchaouen, and walking tours of Fez. I did both Chefchaouen and Fez and was more than happy that I chose to do them. I have stayed in many hostels before and this is one of those times when it was hard to leave. Thank you to Waj and the rest of the staff for a great experience!

Good Vibes Hostel with Excellent tours!

I came here with my friend. We got  a welcome tea and our rooms immedietly. The place is in the heart of the medina, and the owners and workers (mouad etc.) were so friendly. They also make you free breakfast to start your day right! We booked a desert tour and a tour to chefchaouen by this place and it was amazing and cheap. We saw a lot of places and the tour made us really see a lot of morocco. This place is really looking for their people and always help you in any way to make your stay as convenient as possible. 10/10 recommended!!! Thank you for your services BackHome Fez!
