Hostal Don Miguel

Whether you want a private room, or a bed in a dormitory, this hostal is worth it. It is one block from the zocalo and has a roofside terrace you can see the surrounding area from and the the stars at night. The staff are cool, young and friendly, not to mention knowledgable about their city. During high season good luck getting a bed here, it will fil up quick for the price it offers.....

Once again, a good cheap place to stay in the heart of Oaxaca

I stayed in this hostel from Apr 11-15 and it was a big mistake to book all 4 days in a stretch.

The hostel is relatively clean but not as clean as compared to most of the hostels I have stayed in Mexico. The guest area consist of 2 portion - one under the open roof, the other under the roof at the back of the hostel. In both areas, the tables are never cleaned - dusty and full of dirt. The other portion is always littered with tissue and rubbish and was never cleaned since the last 4 days I stayed here. The same litter still lies around. See picture.
The staff were in their young 20s and can hardly speak English. It was very difficult to get information if you do not speak Spanish. The same staff are also the house cleaners. On Sundays, the rooms are never cleaned!
What I hate about this hostel is that they have a great kitchen but was forever locked and guests are prohibited to use the kitchen. Worst of all, there is no drinking water for the last 3 days I stayed there. In all hostels in Mexico, they always provide drinking water but not this hostel. They just told me, no water, no water!

There is no way you want to make a cup of tea or coffee as the kitchen is not available for guest. What a shame!

The rooms are spacious and comfortable and clean. The toilet has no tissue and they never bother to replenish it.

If you are the type who longed for coffee or tea, DON'T STAY HERE, STAY AWAY!   IF YOU DO NOT SPEAK SPANISH, DO NOT STAY HERE! you will not get any information. IF YOU PLAN TO PREPARE YOUR MEALS, DON'T STAY HERE!  AVOID AT ALL COST!

The wifi is a pain! You cannot get the signal inside your room. Even outside your room, the speed is crawling and unstable. The router is at the reception in the front of the hostel and the rooms are all at the back, so the signal does not reach to the back portion.

I regret paying 4 days in advance!  I should have paid only 1 night and check out the next day.

My stay is more than a stress than comfort!

There are better hostels elsewhere, go for them as they are more value for money!

No frill hostel..plain and unwelcoming!

We arrived at Oaxaca City without any reservations to an hotel or hostel. After trying some of the hostels we stumbled upon Hostal Don Miguel. Rooms were $450 Pesos ($38 USD.) a Night and were very basic, just enough space for the bed & private restroom. Not too bad if you are only going to use it to sleep, but if you are planning on lounging + relaxing in the room it is probably not the right place. 

The location is a block and half away from the main Zocalo. It is also very close to some of the main attractions (Mercado 20 de Noviembre, Museums, and Iglesia de Santo Domingo). The surrounding area is very clean and safe.

Good Location. Just-Ok Place.

The hostel is in good location, Dorm rooms are comfortable and clean. 

But the staff can't speak English, just can speak in spaniah only, hard to get information. 

Wifi very poor signal, no signal in room, just can get wifi at outside the room or reception.

Have nice kitchen, but is locked, no open for guest use!

Just Good Location Only

I don't usually leave opinions even when things are not as expected. However, this time I decided I had to let others know. My husband and I spent one night at Hostel Don Miguel. It was unplanned and we had no references, but we were tired and it seemed a decent enough place. We couldn't have been more wrong. 
As in many other hostels in Oaxaca, you access the place by ringing a door bell as the fence is locked. The next morning over 200dlls of ours were stolen from our things while inside the hostel and with the hostel fence to the street locked. They said we were their only guests and they had no one to question. Turns out there was one more guest. Although, I am not blaming that person in any way, It does go to show that the staff was quick to lie. We figured calling the police was pointless. The staff said they would call us if they could find something out, but never did of course. Didn't even return our calls when we called the next day.

Beware

The service here was terrible. They kept shifting an changing the prices of everything, from the rooms to the key deposit. The bathrooms were very dirty, it seemed as though they hasn't been cleaned for months, even to the point where the whole dormitory smelt. They didn't bother to give us clean linen, either. Also they advertise 24 hour reception, but you can't stay out longer than midnight. We left after one night, and I would never stay there again.
