Suzuki Hotel Shimoda

We were 16 frineds who wanted to visit Shimoda. Fortunately we were well accomodated here. We had booked 2 Japanese style rooms and 2 western style rooms. All the rooms were well maintained and clean. Overall this is a nice place with a good ambience.

A good place for a group of people

To start, I paid 11600 yen for 2 people. This ryokan is located a 10-15 minute walk away from the station. There are few restaurants in the area. The only ones I could find were soba noodle shops and izakayas (bar food) around the station. The town of shimoda has no beaches itself, so you have to drive a ways out if you want to go to the beach. The room I had was non-smoking, but the hotel itself reeked like smoke. the lobby, the hallway, and even the onsen. You have to take off your shoes at the entrance of the hotel and there is no cubby or locker to put them in, and you aren't allowed to take your shoes with you, so they have to stay in the lobby unattended all night. 

The onsen itself was one of the worst I have been in. I left after 2 minutes. the showers are so close to the tub so I was sprayed by people's dirty water when they were showering. The tub itself is extremely small and the bottom of it was filthy. I didn't sit my butt on it, and opted to squat for 2 minutes. There are no amenities, so you have to bring your own shampoo and conditioner and soap. I didn't feel clean or relaxed afterwards. However, you absolutely have to use the onsen because there are no showers in the hotel room, so it gets crowded rather quickly. For a shared bathing room, it should have been cheaper, or the onsen should have been bigger and better maintained. 

The room curtains didn't block the sunlight from coming in. The breakfast was toast and orange juice. 

However, the owners were very friendly and helpful. When I asked where the nearest onsens were, they looked up some on the internet and printed me out a sheet. It was very kind of them to go out of their way. Also, there are no elevators, so the owner offered to carry my large suitcase up the stairs to the second floor. My brother had to carry his though. 

Overall, the service was friendly and accommodating, but the facilities were old and dirty. You could do better at a beach side hotel for that price.
