This is very Japanese.  Great fun sleeping on tatami and futons (very comfortable), shared bathrooms (onsen) although some of the group had an ensuite.  Great meals including dinner and breakfast - but you have to like seafood (when in Rome...).  Delightful hosts.  Remember to wear your yutarka to dinner!

Deeply Japanese experience

This is brilliant accomodation!
1. Just off Shimanami Kaido cycle way - easy ride to or they will pick you and your bikes up by shuttle van
2. Huge room (actually a suite) in traditional Japanese style 
3. Extremely helpful staff
4. Amazing breakfast - also traditional Japanese, about 14 bowls per person
5. Lawson convenience store over the road

Staying at the Sawaki Ryokan is a wonderful experience. Upon arrival the host offered us to bring us to the local onsen. A great experience, especially after the bikeride from Imabari. We had dinner at the Ryokan. Another unique experience. We were served many different tasteful seafood dishes. (They offer three different levels of dining options. We ordered the highest level which we did not regret. Absolutely value for money). The service was excellent: friendly and joyful. The large room in traditional style was comfortable. A tasty breakfast, consisting of many different dishes, was served in the large dining room. Another nice experience. The hospitality at this ryokan is of the highest level. Especially the amazing food and wonderful service is worth the visit.   

Superb hospitality, excellent food

We stayed one night here during our 2 day cycling trip. We booked from the ryokan's own website. Confirmation of the booking over email in english was prompt and responsive.

The ryokan is not located on the main cycling route. We cycled here from the Tatara rest station. It was very hilly and not the easiest cycle but there is a dedicated path for cyclists heading to the area where the Ryokan and the path is very close to the main road. Alternatively, if you don't wish to cycle, you can call the ryokan once you reach the rest station to pick you (and the bicycles) in their complimentary shuttle.

Nearby the Ryokan there is a grocery store and a famous shrine ( really worth a visit as the shrine museum houses 80% of all the original samurai armor and weapons designated as national treasures/cultural heritage artifacts in the whole of Japan). and filming sites for the 2013 wolverine film.

Rooms- we had a decent sized room with its own toilet and shower. Wifi was good.
There is a small indoor onsen in the shared gender separated bathroom facilities.

The ryokan is run by a family - service is very helpful. For example they drove us to a large public onsen in the late afternoon and picked us up when we were done. After check-out, we requested them to drop us off (with our bikes) at the port to head to okunoshima. The young guy at the reception spoke good english.

The kaiseki dinner was virtually all seafood dishes prepared in all ways you can imagine. Boiled, tempura, sashimi, agemono (fried) etc. We opted for the basic dinner course set and the portions were massive. The seafood was extremely fresh and delicious. Note that the presentation of the sashimi can be unnerving as the filleted fish appears to be breathing/moving but this is due to muscle contractions and the fish is far from alive. If you upgrade, you get more premium types of fish and Ise lobster. If you want dishes other than seafood you can request for these in advance. The traditional Japanese breakfast was also very tasty. H

In all we would recommend this ryokan.

Traditional ryokan offering great service and extremely fresh seafood

This is a traditional Japanese ryokan.  If you want the authentic experience, this is the place.  Please order the fish dinner and breakfast, they are fantastic if you love real Japanese cuisine.  The hotel will give you a ride to a great local onsen as well.  This is a stop on the Shimanami Kaido not to be missed! You need to be able to read hiragana to recognize the outdoor sign for the ryokan.  Some English is spoken.

Wonderful stop over on bicycle trip

You can taste the best Japanese seafood here!  Nice & very helpful staff,  thank you very much!  Highly recommend!!!  Free feeder bus arranged due to our emergency issue.  The room is clean & tidy.  Although Free wifi is not fast enough but its better than none.

Very good stay & Excellent food

It was raining very heavily and visibility was low, and I was stranded at the rest stop at the foot of Tatara bridge after cycling over from Onomichi. I called the ryokan and they were so kind to pick me and my bike up. The room was very spacious and well equipped with a private bathroom and toilet. Although the ryokan has a traditional feel, the room and furniture were kept clean. They also offered to send me to the nearby onsen and pick me up when I'm done. The onsen was what I really needed to heal my aching and sore body. There were 4 indoor and 4 outdoor baths. Fantastic. Dinner was plentiful it was almost too much for me to finish. The sashimi was so fresh that the prawn was still moving when it was served (scary....but ^^). Breakfast the following morning was just as plentiful, and I especially loved the miso soup of that meal. When I left, they gave me a bottle of water and some local mikans as gifts. Overall it was a really fantastic stay and definitely unforgettable, thanks to the friendly staff at Sawaki Ryokan.
