This hotel smells bad, you'll smell sewage as soon as you walk in. We stayed here last year, same smell, it's not going away. The staff are unfriendly. The decor is tacky. Breakfast options are dismal. Bath towels are small and have a musty smell. Shampoo and body wash are low quality. If all you care about is a hotel next to the chairlift, you will have a good time. If you want a nice hotel, don't stay here.

Great location, terrible hotel

The hotel is located in a touristical area, known by its thermal waters. So, the prices tend to be high.
The room was rather small and the bed quite narrow. Anyway, it had the minimal confort and was very clean.
Breakfast is very good, it is served a a spece full of glamour and you can choose according to your preferences dishes both from the Japanese and Western cuisines.
The staff was very kind and helpful.

Disappointed with the room

A bit confusingly, Hotel Sun Valley Annex is located directly across the street from Hotel Sun Valley, which is more clearly marked. I saw at least 2 other groups make the same mistake, so just an FYI.

We stayed in a twin room that was quite spacious with enough room for 2 people to leave their suitcases open on the floor and still have room to walk around. The room was clean and in very good condition. There are no other large buildings in the area so you should be able to get a good view from the hotel window. There is free Wi-Fi that works reliably.

The hotel itself is a bit out of the way so you'll need to take a local train from the main Beppu station then walk through residential streets for at least 15 minutes before reaching it. There isn't much around there either so you'll often have to walk back to the small station. Small restaurants and convenience stores are nearby however.

Cozy but a bit out of the way

We only chose this because no other was available and we had to take a smoking room as well. The hotel is a bit shabby overall and no wow factor but it was ok for one night. The staff seemed nice enough though their English was limited. We didn't have their breakfast as we had such an early start the next morning so couldn't comment on that. From our corner room, we actually could see into the men's onsen of another hotel ! A little bit disturbing other than that the cityscape view of our corner room was pretty cool.

OK hotel

I was traveled to Beppu for one night and stayed in this hotel or ryoken. This is a mix of Japanese Onsen ryoken and Western hotel. Accommodation plan come with Japanese Dinner and Buffet breakfast. Free parking is provided at the back of the hotel, which is very handy. 

The building has 12 floor and my room was on the 11 floor at the corner, which provided me stunning view of the Beppu bay. Just love it. Room was spacious, neat and tidy. Free wifi access was available to all guest.

Beppu is famous for the Onsen, so onsen is a must here. Hotel guest can use the Onsen in this hotel and the sister hotel across the street. Both are indoor, sadly no outdoor. Onsen in this hotel is not as good as the one in next door. 

The onsen in this hotel is located at the 4th floor, where there was no view and water temperature was just right. Where the onsen in next door was located on the top fop floor, where you can have a good view of the Beppu Bay and had a much comfortable water temperature.

Hotel guest will be charged each for 150 yen onsen tax, which is a standard tax in Japan. Foreigners may not be familiar with this tax. 

Dinner was kaiseki-ryōri, Japanese style with many little dishes and finished with rice. Breakfast was buffet style with ample choice in Western and Japanese food.

Spacious and have good view

If you are driving into Beppu city from the hills (from Yufuin) this hotel is conveniently located just of the road down to the sea. We stayed in the Annex hotel of the two Sun Valley hotels (divided by a small road). The hotels have that early 90's look and feel, and could probably do with a remodeling if I'm honest. However my family's stay here in the winter of 2013 was warmed by the smiles and friendliness of the staff at most turns from the receptionist to the room attendants etc. Admittedly our communication was in Japanese so I'd like to think their effort would extend towards non Japanese speakers too. Our room was on the corner facing the sea. It's not Waikiki, but you got a good look at Beppu and the surrounds. We had a twin room, and despite the dated decor it was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was the usual mixture of Japanese and continental and the food appeared fresh and tasted good but the coffee was from a machine so don't expect much there. We had one dinner at the Sun Valley hotel across the road in the 3rd floor Izakaya...don't be put off by the lack of people the food there, the food was really good though it may prove difficult as they don't have pictures of the food if you cannot speak or read Japanese. I forgot to ask if they had an English menu. The hotel has a number of other restaurants but I would be tempted to try other restaurants in the surrounding area particularly if you have a car. Free hotel wifi was accessible from the room.
