V old style hotel from colonial era - huge rooms with vintage furniture. Hotel is in an excellent location, with very friendly and helpful staff, free wifi that worked well, and an excellent breakfast.

We stayed for 5 nights over Xmas.  On the whole, I would recommend staying here, despite some poor reviews below.  

You can find a bland and brand-new hotel in nearly every city.  You won’t find many hotels like this place.  It reminded me of the Hotel Baron in Aleppo (although with a photo of Sting on the wall rather than Lawrence of Arabia).  Faded grandeur, but grandeur nonetheless, and surroundings do count.

Our room was impressively large and high-ceilinged (and clean).  The bed was big and comfy, the AC worked fine, the shower was sadly under-powered when set to Hot.  The restaurant food was good when we tried it.  The breakfasts were ok (and the masala dosas were excellent).  The waiting staff were fairly hopeless, but they were extremely sweet.

It really does need that refurb promised by the new owners.  A coat of paint in the first floor open area would take only two days.  

Sometimes it’s a good thing to pay over the odds for a hotel which you will remember.  We may have paid more than it is really worth against its competitors, but we will remember the Fairlawn in a good way.

Has its faults, but it’s really worth it

Hugely enjoyable stay here. Stunning heritage style rooms and public areas, very friendly helpful staff and the most delicious breakfasts we had on our whole trip. Lunches great too, as was tea in the lounge. Just a perfect stay, would definitely recommend

We started our holiday in Kolkata at the Elgin Fairlawn and had such a good experience we booked again to finish there as well.

I had a very awful experience at this restaurant.  The service was the worst I have ever has in my life. 
Following are few of the issues faced:

1. The restaurant was service was managed by some junior trainees,
2. Food was served very delayedly, 
3. They did not give water for half an hour, 
4. Soup was served after 1 hour, 
5. Food was not even served on dinner plates initially, 
6. After desert was ordered they said it was not available.
 I don't want to add any more.

Above all the restrooms that we used in the restaurant was one of the worst, one can imagine.

Tour to Kolkata was a group with friends

We came here with our friends for dinner. They did not even keep water for more than hour. Soup took another 1 hour. Main course did not come. All of us started walking around since we could not sit continuously. Toilet was terrible. Worst experience overall. Please avoid

Fairlawn, Kolkata: A little disappointing. We knew other Fairlawn hotels, Darjeeling and Pelling, very nice hotels indeed, so expectations were high. But the Fairlawn Kolkatta is far from it. It still lives up to its reputation but is very battered and in need of a major refurbishment. It looks very nice in photos, but the paint is peeling off. Maybe the new owner from Oberoi Clan, will do something, that would be very necessary. I very rarely, if ever, got a cold coffee for breakfast. The staff sometimes seemed overwhelmed. Not necessarily recommended.

I first stayed at the Fairlawn in 1995 when Mrs. Smith ran the hotel like a smooth sailing ship. I revisited my favorite home away from home in 2018. The price was affordable considering the hotel was under new management and under renovation. So, I pressed my luck in January 2023, but this time was nothing but outraged. The price of the rooms have risen dramatically despite the hotel still being under renovation. The Elgin Fairlawn has aspirations of being a four star hotel, but in my opinion is a low 3 star. The worst part of the stay, was that unbeknownst to the guests, the hotel had rented almost the entire public space to a film crew. We had to maneuver cables tossed along the hallways and lighting equipment, dangerously balanced on the creaky floors. We were told to order food to our rooms!! Outrageous. A number of guests and myself were promised a two day refund. However, when I reached out to management(somewhere in the cloud) I have not received a response. This was indeed a sad ending for a hotel that once treated guests like family, and where one could unwind from a busy day on a terrace overlooking a sprawling patio. Au revoir Fairlawn. It was nice while it lasted.

Swindled

this hotel has charm it is undeniable but it is as if the cleaning, the state of the towels and sheets have also remained in the juice .. when outside the breakfast, it is really dirty.  twice, we asked to reheat the tea served cold … given the price, it’s a bit shameful
