Good simple and wholesome food. the hospitality was warm and welcoming. I had a lamb and potatoes before going into the Gorge for a walk. They have rooms there but I was only a day visitor. I'd certainly go and spend a few nights there when next in Ghania.

Although i contacted many places in Sougia by email, Porofarago was the only accomodation i could book in February, i wonder why as the weather is excellent for hiking. 
Comfortable room with an electric heater, quiet. A bit expensive compared to offseason rates elsewhere. Breakfast was really late, almost 10 am, i had already hiked 2 hours in the gorge beforehand !

Only accomodation i could book near Sougia in the winter

I took a toast and some coffe at this nice place after going up and down the nearby gorge. They have rooms as well. Make a stop here for food and family feeling. 
They bus from and to Sougia stops right outside making this place a great place to wait.

… for breakfast. Very simple breakfast, with coffee, butter and honey, at a very fair price: 4 euros each.
The property was almost deserted; I don't know if this was the effect of the electrical blackout that the whole area was suffering at that time.

Our accommodation was just 5-10 minutes away (on foot) from Porofarago, so it was logical that we would sit down here at least once. The hostess here is kind and seems to do everything by herself. She told us what the choices for dinner were: there was no menu. We were hungry after a hike and a jog, so ordered quite some food. I loved the typical Greek pastries with spinach and cheese, and the tzatziki, too, was very good: we ordered an extra portion! The meat/souvlaki was OK; it would have been nicer if that had not been deep-fried. The fries that came with it are the same as in almost all restaurants on Crete: limp and not a lot of colour (in that respect the Cretans can learn something from the French and Belgians LOL). The Greek salad was good - and there was more than enough of it. For dessert the hostess only had Greek yogurt with honey, but it was delicious! So as long as you don't expect a star restaurant, dinner here is simple, but good.
