This was my fourth visit to Le Bourdil Blanc, for another week of french language immersion. I love this place! From arrival to departure we are well looked after, met at airport or station, served delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and given the run of the house to make our own cuppa. Morning conversation in small groups led the wonderful Alexandre and Florent are followed by afternoon excursions in the minibus with Pascal, to explore some chateau or vineyard...back in time for aperitifs by the log fire, before an excellent convivial dinner. Jane and her french friends make  a winning team!

Another wonderful week of French language, culture and good company

For the seventh consecutive year I have immersed myself in French language and culture with a week at Le Bourdil Blanc, in deepest Dordogne near the magnificent medieval town of Bergerac. We were a small group of like-minded lovers of everything French, with a common determination to improve our spoken French and learn as much as possible of the culture. More than half the group had, like me, been before and were returning for another week of French immersion. This shows that the owner, Jane Hanslip, has got it right, offering the perfect balance of - instruction, with three hours of teaching in the morning; culture, with trips to local places of historical interest in the afternoon; cuisine, with excellent traditional fare at every meal; and ambiance, a welcoming fire blazing in the grate of the elegant drawing room, at aperitif time, to encourage conversation and companionship. With at least two native French speakers almost always in our presence, there was nothing to hold us back in our pursuit of the dream of fluency.

Perfect blend of French language, culture, cuisine and ambiance

If you are learning French at a post-beginner level there is no better way to immerse yourself in the French language and culture than to undertake a 'French in the  Dordogne' week at the Boudil Blanc near Bergerac in France.
The teaching is excellent as are the afternoon trips out to places of interest and the delicious cuisine served up by the Bourdil  Blanc's cook.
The high standards and success of the immersion week courses are no doubt due to the hard work carried out behind the scenes by the manager of these weeks and owner of the Bourdil Blanc, Jane Hanslip.
All in all these weeks make wonderful holidays for francophiles and are provided at a very competitive rate! Weeks are offered each year in the spring and autumn months.

Wonderful French immersion weeks at the Bourdil Blanc in the Dordogne

For the fifth year in a row, I have spent a week at Le Bourdil Blanc totally immersed in French language and culture. With nothing but the well-being of her guests on her agenda, our generous host Jane has found the perfect formula and sticks to it - three hours of classes in the morning, divided into two sessions with different native French speaking teachers, an excellent lunch, a cultural visit in the afternoon to one of the Dordogne’s historic sites, aperitifs in the elegant drawing room and a superb dinner in the large and beautifully furnished dining room. This winning formula remains the same but every course is different because of the different students and the varying content of the lessons. This year we were six students of wide-ranging ages, from disparate backgrounds and four different countries. We got on together like a house on fire! It was most definitely a French house as we spoke French the whole time and no doubt our companionship was greatly assisted by the warm and welcoming ambiance created by Jane.

Another stimulating week at Le Bourdil Blanc

I was looking for a French immersion course and when I found Le Bourdil Blanc I struck gold. What an immersion experience it was! I absorbed French language and culture through lessons, delicious food and wine as well as afternoon trips to various places in Dordogne. From the moment I got off the plane in Bergerac (max 15 min drive from Le Bourdil Blanc), everything was taken care of for me. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The group got on really well and we had a great time together.
I felt enchanted by the house which is full of fabulous pieces of furniture, has a splendid dining room where we had many delectable meals and a living room with a fireplace making it too welcoming to leave.
The days were well planned offering time to learn, relax, see the sights and even do a bit of shopping. French was spoken all the time and with the teachers and Jane's (the host) friends accompanying us at meals and on trips, the lessons never really stopped.
I not only enriched my vocabulary, and became more confident in speaking French, but also learnt a great deal about French daily life, French culture and even French economy (all in French of course). The course inspired and motivated me to study when I arrived back home, which I have been doing since.

Total French immersion

After a two year gap when no visits were allowed through lockdown, it was wonderful to get back to le Bourdil Blanc. It is such a lovely house and the ivy was at its most colourful. Blessed with warm sunshine, we were able to sit outside over coffee and lunch under stunning autumn-coloured foliage. Covid had taken its toll on staff but our teachers adapted, and Jane managed to secure a wonderful traiteur so we enjoyed excellent food as usual. I'd like to thank the others there, perhaps especially Laurent for the magnificent fire he set up every evening - we were a small group of students and we made the most of the opportunity to talk French practically all the time.  It's not for everyone - not a five star hotel, more a relaxed 'house party' vibe, you can pitch in and feel at home. So glad I came!

Back again! I love this place!

Another interesting and useful week at Le Bourdil Blanc. I thoroughly enjoyed the company of the three other students and learnt much from Christine and Clothilde. It was lovely to visit new and different places: Nontron, Brantome and the Chateau de Commarque as well as Issigeac, Montbazillac, Perigueux and Bergerac. I loved the peaceful walks we had in the warm autumn sunshine. The food was most plentiful with some delightful new dishes from the traiteur.
Any hiccups were solved with patience and good humour.

Another enjoyable stay

Delightful French house, rustic and traditional. Communal breakfast and optional dinner was a nice experience...good food ,great value. Very attentive host in Jane who looked after our gluten free request and hosted a lovely meal in the evening. Great location for touring the Dordogne.

Relaxing, delightful French house.

A good opportunity to improve your French in a grand house with beautiful surroundings situated in a quiet rural setting.
My small group of 5 in the morning class was relaxed and was conducive to individual attention from our teachers, Clothide  and Florent who were both passionate about what they do.Florent succeded in making  his sessions fun as well.The mix of classes in the morning with visits in the afternoon to places, some of historical interest, worked well.
The accommodation was good although some of the rooms were better than others.
Delicious food and wine throughout the week.I enjoyed my week with a group of friendly,funny companions.
Despite the ongoing disorganisation I would definitely return to Le Bourdil.
Your personal success at the end of the week will depend on your efforts to immerse yourself in the language and culture.

French Immersion

At one time, according to some of the reviews, this might have been a great experience. However, for anyone considering this immersion French course at Le Bourdil Blanc, beware that the website bears little relevence to the current situation.
Yes, the house is a charming, rambling maison de campagne, which has seen better days. Yes, the pool is lovely. Yes, the catering company is good (no in-house cook any more). Yes, the format in theory is good - all living under the one roof, French class in the morning and trips in the afternoon to charming mediaeval villages. 
Beyond that, be prepared for poor teaching, a chaotic timetable which rarely follows the schedule. And most importantly, be prepared for an owner who  will openly argue with you, and present you with a multitude of excuses as to why things are going awry. Only one teaching group with abilities ranging from elementary to advanced? Not her fault. A teacher let her down at the last moment. A toaster broken, a toilet not flushing, water pouring from a shower tray, TV not working, printer not working? Fault of the previous renters. Departures or meeting times 20 or 30 minutes delayed? Not turning up to serve us breakfast, lunch served 1.5 hours late, dinner served at 9pm? Someone else's fault, not enough staff, Covid to blame etc. If you dare to complain, be prepared for open hostility and the cold shoulder for the rest of the week.
I won't elaborate further as other reviewers have written at length about their stay, which resonates with our group's experience. Suffice to say, think carefully before spending a lot of money on what promised to be wonderful but was a deeply disappointing experience
