This was the worst experience I have ever had at a hotel. The owner was frightening to deal with and lied to us repeatedly.  He put us in different accommodations than we reserved bc he claimed he did not have our reservation despite our showing him a print out of the Expedia reservation. He clearly had double booked our reserved room.  He also forced us to double pay for the one night we stayed there in order to get our passport back from him.
Do not book here!

I would give no stars if I could

This property is very scary.  We arrived at 11pm from the airport and were told by the owner, Christian, that our room was not available.  He had double booked our 2-bedroom apartment called “The Aruba” to someone else.  He told us that there were no rooms.  After showing him our printed out and confirmed reservation from Hotels.com with a $300 paid deposit and arguing for quite some time, he told us he had 2 rooms.  He brought us to a single basement room that had not been cleaned, and another single room far away that was under construction and had no air conditioning, bedding, or mosquito netting.  We agreed to spend the night in these sub-par conditions because it was now after midnight, and he took our passport.

After a very uncomfortable night, the 4 of us unanimously agreed that we would not be staying in these unacceptable rooms which were NOT what we booked.  When I called Christian to check out at 10am (He does not live at the property), he told me he was “away” and that he had my passport with him.  He said that he would not return until 3pm.  

I called Hotels.com 4 times over course of this issue and Hotels.com spoke with Christian and confirmed that he had our reservation and had made a mistake, and that he was holding my passport.  This incident is very well documented with Hotels.com but unfortunately they were not able to correct our booking nor get my passport back.

We checked out and found a new hotel, but returned at 3pm to retrieve my passport.  When we returned, Christian informed us that he did not have my passport and that he would not give it back unless we paid him an additional $170 Euro.  He was essentially holding my passport hostage for more money in addition to the $300 deposit he had taken for a room that he had double booked.  The situation got very scary.  There was yelling from Christian, who all of a sudden spoke perfect English after claiming he did not.  Suddenly his wife pulled my passport out of her purse and began waiving it.  We left $170 Euro on his desk and snatched back the passport and left immediately.

I have visited more than 60 countries and I have never felt as threatened as I did at this hotel.  The entire experience was very shady and we were lied to many times.  It turns out the local people of Deshaies are aware of the problems at the hotel and the owners are not well liked.  The best advice I can give anyone is to stay elsewhere.  It was the scariest travel incident I have ever had.

Scary owners lost our reservation, would not return my passport

We stayed one week in The Grenadine (smaller cabin for 2 and maybe a child) and it was so beautiful and relaxing. I don't think I will ever forget this place! We arrived after dark and to open the door and see the amazing view in the morning...I would love to be going back tomorrow! A variety of birds visit  you in the morning. Don't turn your back on a glass of juice:). The Grenadine has an outdoor bathroom also, but it's very private and connected to the cabin with a door. And if you are a big fan of outdoor showers you are going to love the view from this one. If you are into sterile or plush lodging then this isn't your place, but for those who appreciate serenity and being a little closer to nature, it's perfect. The location is perfect too. It's a quick walk into town so a car is not mandatory.  It's up a hill so if you are in poor shape or have an injury that makes walking hard a car would be necessary. It's best to have a car in Guadeloupe anyway for exploring other areas. 

Coco and Greg are super nice people who will go out of their way to help you.

Paradise!

Our family of five stayed in the Aruba cottage in Dec/ Jan 2016 for 7 days.
The residence is very unusual with the living area & kitchen outside. We enjoyed this but you do require mozzie coils and candles. The bedrooms are both air conditioned.
The view of the town and water is amazing. We especially enjoyed the swing. The hummingbirds and other native birds were a lovely experience as well.
Location for the rest of Basse Terra is very good.
The hosts Coco & Gregoire were very helpful. However their are a few negatives - the rooms and grounds could do with some maintenance & upgrade. For example I think it is unreasonable to not have a fully working shower door. Some of the glasses from the kitchen were chipped. The smell from the septic tank at times was unsettling. Wifi did not work in the cottage. Aside from those few negatives we did enjoy our stay. Thus we give it 3.5 stars.

Good stay

We spent a lovely week in the town of Deshaies, Basse-Terre. Coco and Gregoire are extremely friendly and helpful hosts and made us feel very welcome, also inviting us for an 'apperitif' of local favourites ti-punch and planteur! The lodges are well equipped with stunning views over Deshaies and the sea. Only a 10 minute walk down to the town centre with lots of restaurants and several shops. Would highly recommend staying here!
