This was a great experience for all of my family. A real home stay, basic but clean rooms and bathroom. We had a lovely dinner sitting down with Mario and family. Mario is a great story teller! Ask him about traditional healings... breakfast was great as well

Great family stay

The location was impossible to find using Google maps. If you use Waze you can get there. You may wish to call and have someone meet you at the road as the actual location is difficult to find. This indigenous family had only a couple of hours to prepare for our visit. Therefore, the dinner offered was pretty skimpy. However, the breakfast was quite adequate. The room is very large with a nicely appointed bathroom. The water in the shower gets slightly warmer than tepid at a very low flow rate. At a high flow rate, the shower is cold. The family is quite lovely and the children are a joy to play with. This place is recommended for people who want a homestay type experience with an indigenous family.

Nice room, great view.

What an amazing place. Close enough to Cotacachi and the the taxis can be called easily. The room was big with an amazing view of the volcano. We stayed 2 nights but didn’t do much farm stuff, Though it was great to see the animals.

The family are so welcoming. No English spoken but they make you feel at home, and my partner with me was a Latina. 

Eat every meal you can here - it’s varied, fresh and delicious. We ate meat free for 2 days and it wasn’t a problem in any way. Such an incredible place.

I stayed for four nights and enjoyed the experience of staying with the family. They are so kind and it is great to live with them and share meals. The room I stayed in was very nice. I would recommend highly to anyone to stay here. You get a real feel for life with indigenous Kichwa people of the region.

Wonderful time

Staying here was so special that it became the highlight of my trip to Ecuador.  The family is more than welcoming and kind. The location is remote but relaxing and it is easy to get to town. 

Staying here is an excellent way to be exposed to new culture and insight.  If like me,this is your goal when travelling, than I cannot recommend this more to you.

To take full advantage of the experience I highly recommend helping out on the farm.  This is an experience.

What an Experience!

I spent three nights at Loma Wasi at Tunibumba, an indigenous community three kilometres above Cotacachi. This is the home of an indigenous family headed by Mercedes and helped out by her son, Mario and daughter, Isabela. There are two comfortable guest rooms with their own separate bathrooms. The family has a smallholding where they grow various crops including corn (maize); potatoes; broad beans; squash; melons and avocados. They have pigs, hens and a cow and two calves. The food is largely from their own crops. You eat with the family in their kitchen, dining area, The food is delicious. This is an opportunity to get to know the life of a Highland Quechua family.  Mercedes took the couple who were staying at Loma Wasi at the same time as me. on a walk in the highland above the house and showed us amongst other things a Quechua spiritual site, where the equinoxes and the solstices are celebrated.  Mario took me on a walk with the cattle to their pasture and explained things on the way. The house is situated in a beautiful spot on a hill with a view of the local mountain and the rural settlements. I would love to return. Mercedes, Isabela and Mario were all very welcoming and helpful. Nearby is Laguna Cuicocha. a Cordillera  lake, and they will arrange transportation for guests up to the lake. There is taxi service from Cotacachi to Loma Wasi for $3.00. I am looking forward to returning here.

A highlight of my stay in Ecuador

Loma Wasi is not just a hostel. It's also an unique opportunity to live with a Quichua family and learn about their way of life, culture and traditions. You can share meals with them, admire their beautiful traditional costumes, participate in their daily life. They were all wonderful people. The food was delicious and very healthy. The rooms are warm and comfortable. Also a good place to relax, no stress there. Totally recommended!

A great experience!

I wasn't sure when arriving here, and even less so when I was on the grounds due to being so far away and simple. However, the staff/family were out of this world and the accommodation was second to none. Immaculate, well-kept and genuine. Highly recommend.

Simple place out of town with the most magnificent view from the bedroom.

This is a unique way to experience rural indigenous life near the city of Cotacachi.  The rooms have all the modern comforts you could want--hot shower, wifi, good mattresses, privacy--not to mention grand views of the valley and Cerro Imbabura.  I loved the wholesome and plentiful home-cooked food (lots of vegetables!), the majority of which is grown by the family themselves.  You can learn about various traditional dishes and foods, and how they are prepared or cultivated.  The whole family is kind and humble but mostly reserved as they go about their daily life and work.  If there is anything you are curious about, you should ask (in Spanish unless you happen to speak Quichua), and they will happily share if you do.  Note that filtered drinking water is available in the kitchen so you can fill your bottle for the day.  Also, taking a taxi is the easiest way to find the place for the first time but once there, you can walk and/or take the cheaper bus or taxi to and from town.  This place is really special and the longer you are there to observe, the more you will appreciate it!

A lovely family home

A wonderful indigenous host farm family makes you feel welcome in their home. Guests have their own separate quarters and bath. The farm is small but busy and productive, with cows, food crops, pigs, chickens, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, fruit trees and veggies. The views from above Cotacachi are phenomenal. Volcan Imbabura is on one side of the farm and Volcan Cotacachi on the other.
