Happy hill is located very close to montanita and other small towns around. Their rooms are clean with AC (which is rare to find around this area). They have a big balcony with an amazing view  where you can have breakfast (also included with the room). 

Great place! 

Located in San Jose, 5 minutes drive from Montañita, this beautiful hostel is owned and managed by a very welcoming and helpful Colombian family who will do their best to guarantee a peaceful and fun stay. Rooms are distributed over the big planted land and they are big enough to accommodate 3 to 4 persons. If you want to avoid the overly crowded beach in Montañita during this season and still enjoy the water, you can cross the road to Santa Elena beach or just chill at the hostel pool. It was the perfect choice for a relaxing new year vacation. Will definitely revisit when around the area.

A beautiful hostel with great vibes!

I usually don't write reviews but this time I thought I needed to share my experience. My family and I had the opportunity to stay (for the second time) this past November for a week at this hidden gem. After we arrived we were directed to our room, which was pretty comfortable and most importantly CLEAN. We were later offered refreshments and asked if we had any special request since we were with little kids. We rest for while and headed to the town of Montanita (Of course!). We had an awesome time there but after quite some time stuff got crazy and way too loud for the kids so we just left. I just have to say that we were thankful to be back at our peaceful hostel. There is no way you can compare this hostel to any in Montanita, the whole environment is completely different. This place, besides having an unbelievable view, it is also covered in beautiful vegetation all around: gigantic palm trees, bushes and bougavilleas give this place complete charm. We came here to enjoy nature, breath nature, see nature and that is exactly what Happy Hill is. Do not expect luxury and high end accommodations, if you do, then probably you've got an incorrect concept of the area around. Some reviewers complaining about the same thing, people have to understand this is Ecuador, not the US. Staff is nice and warm, reminds me of the balinese. We just love the sincere no-pose friendly but always respectful service all the staff members offer you. You feel good, like you are part of it, they make you feel you are family.  Alvaro (owner) and his son Gonzalo always on top of everything are open to have a nice conversation with the guests. Watching the sunset on top of the hill and eating patacones "happy hill" was an exciting experience my little ones loved to do every day after a long day of adventure. Can't wait to return this year!!
Price is reasonable, big enough and clean rooms, staff is cool, amenities are beautiful, food is pretty good (ceviche and patacones Happy Hill are a must!), plenty of parking space and close to the beautiful beach of San Jose.

Breathtaking view! Wonderful place to enjoy nature and relax in San Jose

Happy hill is à cute little hostel with great service and ameneties for the price.  It is about 10 minutes and à 3$ ride away from montanita. We stayed there in july which is low season so the Cook isn't in at that time but we were still well recieved with breakfast each morning and the option of getting food delivered from town in the Day but since the cab ride Was inexpensive we Would usually go in town to eat. 

The hostel has a great view of the small town of San jose and the ocean. You can take a cab and go to the busier beach of montanita or you can walk to a super quiet beach where you can spot fishermen in the day. There are no activities or surfboard rentals here but its about a 5 to 10 minute walk from happy hill so its also great. 

The owner and his son both speak english fairly well which is rare in this part of ecuador. This definitely came in handy when came time for our check out because there Was no electricity through out the region so we couldn't pay with credit and we couldn't take out money in the atm. But we were able to Come to an understanding which Would have been impossible without completly understanding eachother. At least we had Just enough money on us to eat for the rest of the day. My recommendation is to always keep cash on you because power failures are frequent and sometimes the atms have no more money in them. 

Overall the service Was great. The breakfast Was good but very basic and the room Was small but cute and always clean. There Was à Nice pool that we didnt end up using cause we prefer the ocean although we Would have used the hot tub but it wasn't working, probably because it Was low season, i guess that Was the Only real dissapointment.
