This hotel is showing its age a little and could probably do with a face-lift, but overall it was a wonderful experience staying here. Its remote mountain location is absolutely stunning, rooms are comfortable and look out onto gorgeous tropical vegetation, the ranchon is a fabulous place to sit and eat, and staff are friendly and helpful. The adjacent pool and waterfall is fairytale beautiful - although we heard reports that it dries up in the dry season. Guided walks and horse rides are a great way to see the area, and walking up the steps behind the bedroom blocks leads up to a small farm on the hill, where delicious evening meals can be booked.

POTENTIAL BOOKING PROBLEM: when we booked, most booking sites showed that the hotel was fully booked, and I managed to find only one room on a more obscure site. In reality, we we virtually the only people staying. There seems to be some glitch in the booking system, which is likely to be deterring potential guests. Hotel management should look at this!

Rural mountain idyll

We booked the Villa El Salton based on a guidebook recommendation, and are we ever glad we did! After a week of cities and towns, it was just the relaxing break we needed. The hotel is about 4 km down a rough road from File, near Cruce de los Banos, so finding it put our mapping program to the test, but we had no problem. We honestly had pretty low expectations, but were pleasantly surprised at every turn. The staff were all friendly and helpful, the food was surprisingly good and inexpensive (especially given that they pretty much have you captive) and our room had a lovely balcony overlooking the grounds with lots of trees. The hotel is set in a sort of bowl, with lots of greenery all around and calls of the birds between about 5:00-7:00 in the morning was an absolute treat. Apart from the rather raucous birds, it was extremely quiet. It can be cool early and late in the day, as the sun doesn't get in over the rim of the bowl; our fleece jackets came in handy! The waterfall is just a 3-minute walk from the rooms and was a pleasant spot to just sit and relax with a drink, but you had to bring your drink with you - the little bar at the waterfall was destroyed by a hurricane and hasn't been rebuilt yet. There's a small swimming area there, but we didn't go in. The restaurant is thatched roof and open sides to take full advantage of the natural surroundings. There's a rather rough pool table (free) for guest use. The rooms are in four blocks of about 8 rooms each; all are a good size and all have balconies to the front.

There were very few other guests when we were there, possibly because the hotel is still getting back on its feet after a hurricane, but apart from the waterfall bar, all buildings were in good shape and they were very fastidious about keeping the walkways clean and tidy. There's little to do here except take a hike around the perimeter and just sit back and let the peaceful surroundings drain your cares away, so 2 days is probably all you need, but it's a very worthwhile diversion.

Get back to nature!

This hotel is in a beautiful location and needs more visitors! There's a stunning waterfall with pools for swimming. We had a wonderful three night stay but were the only hotel guests there. It was as if we were celebrities and had booked the whole place for privacy. This meant that we had the pools to ourselves and when the air conditioning unit in our room went on the blink, we were able to spread into the room next door. There was an amazing guide called Ricardo who took us on a hike around the hotel and is incredibly knowledgeable about the birds and plantlife. And there were daily opportunities to book massages as well. It's a very relaxing place and was perfect for putting our feet up for a couple of days. The road up to it is a bit challenging for the average car (but not impossible). All the staff were incredibly friendly, helpful and kind to our 16 month old daughter. There were chickens and chicks pecking around, which entertained her, and hummingbirds visiting the plants, which entertained us. The TV had a channel of subtitled films and there was a pool table.

Beautiful setting, good swimming by a stunning waterfall and lovely staff

A good hotel at a extremely beautiful environment. We arrived in the afternoon and the well was to dry for a swim. It was very hot, so we decided to look for horses to visit the well in the river for a swim. Just a few minutes to the farm a bit higher on the mountains we were received a very warm welcome from the family and went with the son in law on horses for a ride to the well in the beautiful mountains. An experience never to forget. We had the most beautiful afternoonride and swim I have ever had.

Beautiful

This hotel is beautifully situated in the middle of nature. Despite this, the rooms are very nice and clean with a hot shower. There was a waterfall were it was possible to swim however there was not enough water coming from this waterfall anymore. The hotel offers walks trough the nature. Food was very good compared to other venues in Cuba.
