We had the most wonderful time staying at Oceania House in January 2023. Home Island is an exquisitely beautiful, remote paradise and Oceania House is the best place to stay. PLEASE IGNORE THE OLD NEGATIVE REVIEWS. Oceania House is under new management and they have done a spectacular job to make the accommodation what it is now. The rooms are clean and the host Ossie is the friendliest, most welcoming and hospitable man. He did everything to make our stay as comfortable, stress-free and enjoyable as possible. 

Getting there: 
The host Ossie met us at the airport on West Island and took us to the jetty, where it was about a 30 minute ferry ride across the lagoon to Home Island. ($2.50 pp. bring coins). What a wonderful way to soak in the atmosphere and adjust to island time, feeling the wind in your hair as you sail through the turquoise waters! When we arrived at Home Island, Ossie helped us with our luggage and drove us to Oceania House on a golf buggy -the best way to get around town! (I highly recommend hiring one during your stay).

The building: 
Arriving at the doors of Oceania House was like being transported through time. The smell of teak wood and frangipanis surrounds you as you enter and see the magnificent, spiralling staircase leading up to the bedrooms. The foyer is majestic, with doors leading to sitting areas, a kitchen, and a fairytale-like library filled with old books and antique furniture. I loved sitting in the deep windows reading a book and drinking tea (which you can make yourself in the common kitchen area). The kitchen has a microwave, kettle, toaster, hot plate, fridge, and all of the crockery and utensils you would need. Many people bring food with them from mainland Australia and you can cook it here, adding to the feeling of being at home. 

The rooms: 
We stayed in The Rose Room. It was spacious and comfortable, with an ensuite and fans. (We were told that air conditioning will be installed in the coming weeks). The room has gorgeous, deep windows, where a breeze often passes through. We stayed in early January 2023 and were blessed with sunny, clear days and light breezes. Our room also had a coffee table and two chairs to sit at. The bed was comfortable and had a mosquito net hanging from above, although mosquitoes weren’t an issue while we were there. 

The grounds: 
Just metres from the entrance of Oceania House is a calm, quiet beach. If you bring fishing gear with you, this is a great spot to cast out your line and try your luck. Large calophyllum, frangipani and palm trees shade the area and you’ll soon meet little hermit crabs and wild chickens roaming around. 

Overall impressions: 
Oceania House is a historic building, so don’t expect it to be The Ritz. The charm of this accommodation is in its history, its location, and its old-world beauty. Come with an open mind, and you’ll have a wonderful time. 

Recommendations: 
* Hire a golf buggy or bike to get around the island. Walking is fine and manageable, but you’ll be able to see more of the island this way. It’s how the locals get around, and it’s very fun.

* Take Ossie’s cultural tour! Ossie has a wealth of knowledge on these islands and he is also joined by local elders who demonstrate their skills of husking coconuts and weaving baskets. You will appreciate the islands more after having gained insight into its rich history. 

* Book your meals in advance. Seafront Restaurant does a buffet dinner on Wednesday nights, but you’ll want to make sure that you reserve a seat! Their capacity is ~30 guests and tourists from West Island will be wanting in too. 

* Support the local businesses by buying food on the island. It is more expensive than mainland Australia, but that is to be expected. Try an iced coffee and toastie for breakfast at Seafront Restaurant! 

* You can also bring an esky of food with you from mainland Australia, just remember to bring your receipt to show customs where it was purchased. Food options on the islands can be limited, so bringing some easy to make meals and snacks is recommended if you get stuck. A few packets of Mi Goreng and some fresh fruits always come in handy. 

* SLIP, SLOP, SLAP! And drink lots of water! 😄 Covering your shoulders is a good way to save yourself from sunburn, and is also respectful of the culture and religion of the Cocos Malay people on Home Island.  

Spectacular old-world charm!

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our trip to the Cocos Keeling Islands.  It was excellent .  Everyone needs to know that this house has changed ownership and is very different to how it used to be.  The historic value of the house is still there without a doubt but the new management have worked hard to clean it up and make it very comfortable.  The enthusiasm and pride that “Ossie” - the manager/caretaker - takes it from a 4 star experience to a 5 star one.  Ossie was there to pick us up from the airport, he is a fountain of knowledge about Home Island and of course, the “Big House.”  We were lucky enough to have the house to ourselves for 2 nights - which added to the atmosphere too .  Would thoroughly recommend to anyone to visit .

Oceania House - a must do

I recently stayed here for a night after hearing that it was under new ownership and management. I was met at the airport by Ozzie the host, who is also the local tour guide, and he provided all the information I needed on the house and Home island. The house itself was amazing and relaxing, super comfortable with plenty of bedding and mosquito netting on each bed (not that I needed it). Breakfast in the ballroom was yummy and the view made it even better. Lots of history in this house, felt like I was stepping back in time. Would definitely recommend staying here for a few nights to break up your stay at the Cocos, and get to experience the cocos-Malay culture on home island!

Love this place!!

I had the pleasure of visiting the house a couple of times, once for the historical tour.
Avril and Lloyd are great, knowledgable hosts who love to show people around and answer all your questions.

Fascinating tour

There are two inhabited islands in the cocos. West Island and Home Island. Home island is less touristy and is home to the unique Clunies Ross house. There are four guest rooms in the old homestead which is partly restored but significantly historically altered. A shame that this grand old architectural fame has been through so much but her loving owners have brought back some of her grandeur. The rooms and the common areas are delightful. We had a wonderful time though we would recommend staying for a week if you can spare the time. There’s a lot of ‘doing nothing’ to do. Thank you to our very lovely hosts - the communication was excellent and it wouldn’t have been half the holiday it was without you both. 

Unique stay

My wife and I stayed at the “big house” over New Years. It’s an amazing old place, and the new ownership have clearly done a huge amount of work to restore this gem. Still more work to do (AC just getting installed), but it’s clean and spacious, a really special place and a unique experience. The absolute highlight though was Ossie as host, he was absolutely brilliant, took care of us and also gave us some of the incredible history of Cocos. Home Island is definitely quieter than West Island (and religion is a big part of daily life), but we found the locals really friendly and welcoming. It was so nice to be able to swim straight off shore from the place in the amazing turquoise water, and we even cooked a bbq for sunset one night. Highly recommended!

Charming old place with a fantastic host!

This Thai restaurant books out quickly, so make a reservation as early as possible. The location is right on Catseye  Beach. The food was very nice and the staff were lovely. I would definitely recommend this restaurant when visiting Hamilton Island.

A nice eating experience

Oceania House is steeped in history. The actual house is amazing and can only be viewed if you are staying here.Current hosts are Keegan and Raylee. They give you the low down on what's available and what to do and are very helpful with the bags...picking up and dropping off at the ferry dock. 
   One note there is not a lot of food options on the island so it's a self catering place with fridge space , microwave etc..and wifi is very limited and patchy..so be prepared..
 Bikes are provided and they are great for snorkelling up near the Chinese Cemetery and Turtle Beach..Outside food is only available from 9 to 1pm at Seafront Restaurant near the jetty and the odd nights and Cafe Ku at the admin centre is sometimes open...the Shamrock Supermarket is open at 07.30am
Overall its a quiet island and worth 2 to 3 days look as they now do some good tours with Home Island Hire..

A fascinating house 

Thanks to SHOVEL ,  our stay at the Oceania  a GRAND HOME 🏠 in its day was great , 
room was tidy clean and unique old furniture, 
 it was still getting a Renato , all the facilities were on hand , but did miss my own fridge, ☕️ 🐮 in our room , had our own Lady cook 👨‍🍳 bring us tea which  lasted the next day for lunch, leftovers, 
🎈🎉🌴🌴✅

Home Island

We have just returned from a blissful week staying at Oceania House on Home Island part of the Cocos Keeling group of Islands. A Baronial Manor on a tiny Atoll Island it was a unique experience that we enjoyed immensely. From our reception on arrival on West Island  to being whisked off into the inky darkness of the night by ferry spotting turtles in the lagoon during the crossing to Home Island it was thrilling. Oceania House itself glinting in the moonlight was fantastic. Eccentric but immensely enjoyable we  loved the high ceilings, beautiful teak paneling, cross ventilation and the ceiling fans. There is a degree of work in progress about Oceania House it is a constant battle with the surrounds to keep the greenery at bay but we were very happy with our self catering over the week. How did we entertain ourselves? We made use of the bikes provided to get to the beautiful Sandy Point beach when we wanted to lie on the sand or refresh in the lagoon. Beaches at Oceania were great for dipping but not for pure white sand tropical Island lolling. We did a great tour of the island with Wizen and ate his wife, Hiati’s, delicious Cocos Malay food, we caught the ferry to Direction Island to ride the rip. Turtle watching with Net Su and Jan was my highlight especially when you threw in a snorkel over coral in the lagoon and some fabulous fishing. 

We didn’t do enough  research  before arrival re ferry services and food / alcohol provision but managed to make do. Bring your own must haves with condiments and basics as they are not necessarily available at the super market. Close your eyes and just pay the prices for fresh food, it has to be airfreighted in. Fabulous bread and coffee are available on West Island from Tony at Salt Water at the airport and buy your Spirits/ wine / beer at the club on West Island as Home Island is dry other than what is consumed at Oceania House. However this needs planning as the bar opens at 5pm and there is only one ferry a week that comes back to Home island after that time. 

None of this was detrimental in our enjoyment of our stay. We much preferred Home island and the Kampong to West Island and it’s more party focused lifestyle. 

Take a good book or two, download some movies to watch, pack goggles and a snorkel to discover the magic of the lagoon and wind down. 

Avril was a great hostess, from meeting us at the airport to waving us goodbye on the jetty a week later she was always there to organize a tour or fill us in on Island history. We shared a couple of meals with she and Lloyd and were fascinated with their stories. It is rare to find somewhere as unspoiled by tourists as our stay at Oceania and we enjoyed it more for that with all its idiosyncrasy.
