Really chilled out atmosphere and the staff were so helpful and friendly. I forgot my walking boots when I left the hostel and one of the staff members Diego drove 40 minutes to the airport to return them. Would definitely recommend.

Great Hostel

We came to Nega Meluca to stay during carnival and enjoyed it so much we rebooked for when we were travelling back though salvador later in our trip. The hostel is nice, clean and has a good kitchen with a balcony social area. 
But the staff were what made our stay. Diego was so helpful and friendly, her really made out time in Salvador better. He recommended parties and places to go on nights out as well as recommending a guide for when we visited lencois. When we left for the airport we realised we’d forgotten some belongings and when we rang the hostel diego immediately stopped what he was doing and drove them to the airport for us so we could get them before we go. He quite literally always went the extra mile to make our stay better, as did all the other staff.

After 20+ years of travel and 35+ countries visited I can say quite confidently this is by far the worst guest house experience I have ever had. The area around Nega Maluca had turned into a late night party spot, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's pretty fun actually. But since the partiers are urinating all over the street and on the guest house door the manager Diego had the very bad idea to dump buckets of water on the partiers. When I came too the door to buzz in I had a bucket of water mistakenly dumped on me which was very unpleasant. When I complained to Diego about it he dismissed my concerns out of hand and offered no apologies. I decided to leave the guest house instead of stay the last night of my reservation as I did not feel welcome there. The next day when I went back to check out I asked for a discount for the night I did not stay. Diego told me he didn't like my attitude, pushed me quite hard and then threatened to hit me with his fists. I found this behavior completely unacceptable and we left almost immediately. Please stay literally anywhere else when you go to Salvador, this might actually be the worst place in town

I loved the location of this hostel and the staff was also very nice. 
However, the facilities are very dirty (rooms, bathrooms, kitchen), if you need to store your valuables somewhere,  it needs to fit into an extremely small box. Similarly, the kitchen is also tiny, with no room to prepare your meals. Also, they don’t accept cards, so you’ll have to pay cash for your accommodation. 
It’s good if you’re staying in Salvador for a night, I wouldn’t recommend this place for a longer stay.


Chilled, but dirty

We came because we read good reviews but it was nothing like it. The staff was nice and it is very close to the historical city. The rooms had weird smell as well the the bathrooms. There was little insects on our stuff all the time and we have a lot of mosquito bites or something like that. The bathroom was kind of dirty. Also the kitchen wasn't so clean and it wasn't such a good experience to cook there.

One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. All the staff & volunteers are really friendly and helpful. They go the extra mile to keep the guesthouse clean and create a chilled out atmousphere. Also very helpful and knowledge about the area, how to stay safe, good places to go and where possible try and helped negotiate a cab fare. 

The guesthouse is quite humble and clean. The kitchen is a little small, so at peak times it can be get packed but this just encourages a sharing culture.

I came during carnival and we were given a lot of useful information about how to stay safe good places to go, other areas to check out. Also a great place to meet other travellers.

Would definitely reconmend to everyone.

Amazing chilled out hostel - great service and staff

I had a great time in this hostel, loved the atmosphere, the people and the organization for celebrating all together the amazing Salvador Carnival. Very good location and breakfast, would absolutely recommend!  Obrigada Nega Maluca 

Excellent place!

We stayed at Nega Malucca in a private room with AC for two nights. First and foremost, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly! They provided us with great recommendations of things to do in the Pelourinho and helped us get around town (and to our next destination). The hostel is well-located, a walk away from the main square, and in a well lit area that we felt safe returning to at night. Breakfast was simple, but very ample. The hangout/breakfast area out back was very comfortable and nice. 

However, our room left much to desire. The bed took up much of the space in our room and it was a challenge to fit two people and our bags in the remaining space and opening and closing the door. The room also had a few windows to common areas that were hard/impossible to lock, which made the room feel not secure. Furthermore, the shared bathroom was located downstairs, which was a pain at night.

Overall, although the staff was wonderful and the hostel vibe was positive, we thought that the quality of the room should have been much higher, considering how much we paid.
