Rio Negro Guest House

I was there in middle of June, and I loved that place. Simple but very very familiar. Clean and nearby from many tourist centers! I recommend it for all my friends and for those who like practicality.

We spent 2 nights here on our way to and from an Amazon lodge. The owner's son picked us up in a taxi at the airport which was very helpful. We were also able to store our large bags safely at the guesthouse and only take small bags on to the lodge with us. 
We had two different rooms and both were cool and clean. The breakfasts were tasty and substantial and they were able to provide a very early breakfast when we needed an early start.
During our stay the owners were experiencing some family difficulties but they did not let this interfere with the service to their guests. We loved our stay there.

We stayed at the Rionegroguesthouse in August 2008 one night before and one night after a trip to a lodge in the Amazon (Amazon Tupana Lodge-excellent).
Pick-up at the airport as confirmed by email, no problem with that, neither with the transfer in and out. The rooms are very clean, as is the whole guesthouse; breakfast with view to the Rio Negro Palace with fruit juices, cakes, eggs, coffee, tea; everything there; 
Internet access at the owner´s pc, which is not a problem, because you can just use it whenever it is free.
The owner Friedrich and his wife are very friendly; they know a lot about Manaus and are happy to show you around the town. Friedrich is a heavy smoker and the back of the house with the Biergarten needs some renovations, facts that might be disturbing for others, for us it was not. 
Manaus is a busy city, some areas look scary to Europeans, as do some of the streets in the neighbourhood of the guesthouse, but walking to the harbour, the market and the main shopping area is not a problem at all. Ask Friedrich to join you for a typical brazilian dinner in one of his favourite local "restaurants" in a street nearby. You would (and maybe should) never go there alone, but it is a good experience to get a feeling for how locals live and spend their evenings.
We enjoyed our stay at Rionegroguesthouse and can recommend it to everybody looking for an affordable stay with personal recommendations for Manaus.

Rio Negro Guesthouse - good experience

This guesthouse is in a very nice location, 15 minutes walk from the Amazon Theatre.  The rooms are not on the street side, so they are quiet and you can sleep well. They also have a silent air conditioner. The mattress need to be changed. 
Breakfast was definitely very bad for brazilian guesthouse standards. Coffe and milk always cold, and it doesn´t offer brown bread, yogurt or cereals. The owner and the staff were helpfull and nice, booked a tour (all went well).

The guesthouse is very central and the rooms are quiet. Breakfast is bad.

I found this quest house completely misrepresented itself. Yes she speaks German, she says it over and over again. My room key was lost and I was locked out of my room with my passport, cell phone and everything (cash) inside.. why was I locked out of my room you might ask? Because the housekeeper took my room key home with her and didn't come back until later that night. I missed dinner meeting my friends and it became a screaming match as the owner completely lost it. There is no master key - no duplicate room key. When I offered to get a second key made - that too wasn't satisfactory to her. She is an emotional wreck. As for the rooms and hotels, it is in desperate need of a paint job and serious cleaning. The room with two twin bed couldn't fit a water bottle between them, no closet, hangers, dresser and one chair in the room with bar light blubs. I got bug bites all over my legs while my roommate didn't - so we figure that was from the bed. My advice find a different place. Oh yes, they didn't have bottled water.
