The hotel looks pretty basic. The rooms are old but everything works. The staff is very friendly and in the morning we got a very nice and well prepared breakfast. The price is not very basic and could be adjusted according to the standard of the hotel.

Excellent food. Very fine indeed. Far better than some of the offerings in this town. Classically prepared with delicate flavours well yet simply presented. Not cheap but a high culinary standard. The owner speaks good English though he claims not to. Some rare bottles of wine as well as some more common ones. 

Dinner. 

Having just spent the last three nights at Hotel Beau Rivage I thought I would share my experience.  First off we arrived just before 16:00 and found the place locked. Fortunately the owner was in and let us in where he checked us in and gave us the chat about no noise after 22:00, breakfast at 08:30 and that the Hotel rooms were clean and basic for a 2* Hotel. So off we went up two flights of stairs with a very flimsy banister and worn lino. Once in our room (8) we were greeted with a  dated room, dated furniture, old wardrobe, a single chair, a tv that did not work (although the owner did rectify this once informed) and a bathroom with 70s decor, a tiny bath with a shower hose connected to the mixer tap and no curtain, so any idea of a stand up shower, forget it unless you want to spend the next 10 mins cleaning the bathroom. Breakfast was a mix of cheese, ham, jam, kiwi fruit, a boiled egg or some salami but not all on the same day. :) We had to ask for orange juice and tea, not offered. Overall the stay was uneventful and for the price we paid adequate although we had a deal, I would not have stayed had I had to pay the full asking price as advertised in the Hotel. Not somewhere I think I would go back to.

Basic Hotel at not such a basic price

Jacques is a lovely host. He makes the place feel more like a B&B than a hotel. And he serves fantastic breakfasts. That said, the room was a bit oudated and we had a creaky bed. The place is not perfect, but does have tons of character. It does not come awfully cheap, but neither did any of the other accommodation when we visited La Roche.

Quite lovely and right in the town centre

Myself and my 16 year old son travelled to the Ardennes to take a Second War World Vet friend of ours back to where he fought for a couple of weeks some 70 years previously (for the 53rd Welsh Division). He is now 88 and this was his first trip back there so as you can imagine it was an emotional trip - especially with snow on the ground evoking memories that still burn strong. 

We chose a hotel that was fairly basic (1-2 star standard) but conveniently located in the handsome town of La Roche. The room we had booked was a two room suite and it was located on the top floor (up three flights on narrow wooden stairs). The room itself was comfortable but lacked some basic essentials like a shower curtain, a toilet that flushed properly and a bathroom door! Still we lived with that as we weren't in our room very much anyway. 

What was by far the most disappointing aspect of the entire trip was the attitude of the hotelier who was a rude and angry man. 

We tried to avoid him after he shouted at us and started waving his arms in the air after we informed him we had deciding not to eat at his restaurant. When we returned later that evening, he didn't answer the front door bell despite being within sight - another guest had to let us in eventually after feeling sorry for us freezing outside. When we later asked for the door code, he refused to give it to us saying that it was only closed earlier due to 'fighting in the street outside', which we found very hard to believe.   

Upon arrival, we were told that we had to be very quiet during our stay as the hotel was very old - but it was still comparatively young compared to our Veteran friend. On one occasion thereafter we were told off for making too much noise in a manner akin to a teacher telling off kindergarten kids. It was New Years Eve but we weren't exactly raving!

All other aspects of the trip were brilliant and our veteran friend rightly got treated like royalty wherever we went.  

My advice is that if you wish to avoid being berated and belittled by the hotelier from hell then do yourself a favour and find another hotel, preferably one that is authorised by the Belgium Tourist Board.
