While this review may be a little longer than usual, I will not stoop to the Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness of a previous reviewer (S.F.), who's lofty standards I could not hope to emulate. 

I've been staying at the Sundeck since 1963 (more seasons than not), and albeit I was very young then, I have many fond memories over the many years. Yes, the building itself is dated (60+ years old), and some (Mr F) may say it's "tired", but the atmosphere, food and service is always memorable, the views from most of the rooms, the bar and lounge are  breathtaking, and the ski in ski out position is unmatched. As is the value for money for such a prime position.

I’m not sure about other people (😳) ….. but I don’t go to the snow to watch TV or spend time on devices. Strange as it may seem, I go to ski, and for the enjoyment of interacting with other lodge guests (and staff). Obviously staff and food and snow vary from season to season, but overall there is no better place to stay!! And I believe I am well qualified to comment as I have stayed in MANY different hotels and lodges over the years.

Cliff, Sayaka and the other staff are always friendly and accommodating, like calmly and clearly (and often humorously) explaining the options for dinner, or providing power boards or extension cords if required 😳. And strangely, I’ve never considered it an imposition to drop my room key in the box before leaving each morning…. A- I’m not at risk of losing it, and B- it’s one less thing in my pockets (of which there are usually many when skiing). 

Another thing I really enjoy at the Sundeck is the afternoon live entertainment 6 days out of 7. Nowhere else on the mountain provides this!  And while it is true that the wild “party days/nights” at the Sundeck are a rarity these days, it’s not such a bad thing for old buggers like me who can no longer party all night and ski all day. 😔

Keep up the great work Cliff and Sayaka, you provide a fantastic overall service at reasonable on snow rates.

Always Has Been, Always Will Be  - The Best Place To Stay On Mountain In Perisher

If you've heard whispers painting this place as a sanctuary for gourmet aficionados, dismiss those tales as the ravings of high-altitude hysteria or perhaps the foggy judgment induced by lackluster libations. The culinary landscape here is a monotonous loop of "canned nostalgia"—a gastronomic journey so uninspiring it leaves you yearning for more, both in taste and experience. Come dinner time, the meat regularly has the unfortunate texture of shoe leather, while the breakfast bacon often quivers in its own state of undercooked liminality.

The dinner offerings are as limited as they are uninspired—typically two, sometimes three choices for an entrée, main, and dessert. As if the scant options weren't disheartening enough, prepare yourself for an additional test of patience. Often, we found ourselves waiting an interminable amount of time, only to be greeted by perplexed or irritable waitstaff who hastily asked for our orders before we even had the chance to discover what meager choices were on offer for the evening. The peak of my dining experience? A bold thief swiped a piece of toast right off my plate at breakfast, claiming ownership.

The dining timetable is more rigid than a monk’s daily regimen, forcing you to choose between sustenance and alpine activities as they clash with First-Tracks and Night Skiing. All this while dining amidst a symphony of coughs and sneezes, meaning catching a bug is unavoidable.

So dismal was the food and dining experience that we opted to dine elsewhere on multiple occasions, despite meals being included in our package. We literally paid to avoid eating what we had already paid for—that's how disappointing the experience was.

Let's shift the spotlight to the social tapestry of this enigmatic establishment. Imagine, if you will, a cocktail of a retirement home and bustling daycare center, all seasoned with a confounding dash of ennui.

The staff morale plummeted to depths rivaling the mountain's low snow levels. Rather than waking up to the invigorating scent of fresh mountain air, I awoke to a live melodrama unfolding in the kitchen. The tension escalated to such a degree that it left some employees in tears and onlookers in a state of shock. Matters reached a boiling point when one of the owners sharply rebuked the cook, telling him to focus on his job rather than console his distressed colleague.

Even the nocturnal life here is a monochrome canvas—once dinner is cleared, the locale morphs into a ghost town, hauntingly vacant but for the echoes of days long past.

Now, a word on the key policy—a gamble so fraught with uncertainty it would make a casino blush. You're expected to hand in your room key every time you leave the hotel and collect it upon your return. This procedure turns each outing into a suspenseful guessing game, as the availability or willingness of front-desk staff to assist you becomes a constant concern, easily avoidable by switching to pin-based door locks.

Ah, the location—a pitfall in disguise. The journey back to the hotel from the village below is nothing short of a Sisyphean struggle with young children after the lifts stop spinning. Alas, the only available oversnow transportation feels like highway robbery, sans the highway.

But wait, the stage has more curiosities to reveal! For those who might seek solace in the glow of a late-night TV binge or a Wi-Fi-powered scroll—prepare for a cavernous void of digital deprivation. The rooms are as amenity-free as a hermit's abode, and it's as if the architects aspired to construct a symphony hall, only instead of music, it's designed to amplify every creak, squeak, and footstep, turning the building into a real-life game of "Guess who's stomping around upstairs?" 

And then there are the power outlets—scarce as hen's teeth and as conveniently located as a desert waterhole. One was hidden behind the bunk beds for the adventurous, and another in the bathroom next to the toilet for the multitaskers among us.

Ah, but we can't overlook the pièce de résistance: Our parting gift was a pair of mysterious underpants of unknown origin lurking under the bed which had shared our week-long stay—not exactly the memento you'd like to discover on checkout.

So, for a princely sum that would make even a mountain blush, this tragicomedy of high-altitude adventures left me squarely at base camp, yearning for a climb that never was. When the final curtain dropped, I found myself not just pining but downright clamoring for all that could have been but sadly, never was.

High-Altitude, Low Satisfaction: Over-promises yet spectacularly under-delivers

While the Sundeck could use a little spruce up we wouldn't stay anywhere else in Perisher. The location is unparalleled. The food is always excellent and the service is great.  Love that first run down to the lifts in the morning and skiing to the door when coming back in the afternoon.

Ski in, ski out

We had the most wonderful time at Sundeck. Cliff worked so hard to keep all of us house guests very happy. The food was sensational and the best on the Mountain. The rooms were cosy and comfortable and clean. The staff were really friendly and patient. 

Having a bar with live music and even a magician for the kids and a warm lounge room was so special. 

The views were unbeatable and the luxury of being able to ski in and out anytime was really just the best. 

For those who need in room telephones, tvs, ironing boards  and central heating go somewhere else!

We loved our 5 nights at the Sundeck , superb ski in ski out location with pub, loung/games room and dining room . This year even lunch was included, breakfast and lunch were great, but the 3 course dinners were seriously amazing! I couldn’t stop raving to my partner each night who was at home minding our dog . I would recommend paying the extra and booking the mountain view room as much bigger , our courtyard room was very small and in need of a make over - great for children though . The showers were fab and the bed was comfy. ✅ highly recommend Sundeck if you are skiing Perisher

Fab on snow ⛄️ Place to stay

Great spot to rest the weary legs, quench the thirst and enjoy the view.
Bar service was efficient, food service not so.
Seemed rather odd, that after paying for a bowl of hot chips at the bar, one then had to go to the dining room, join another queue than eventually be given a buzzer as the hot chips were cooked on demand, not only for me but for the half dozen or so others who were also ordered hot chips.

Great view, average service

The Sundeck is ski in-ski out. Accommodation includes all meals. So once you get there (via the SkiTube and Hans Oversnow) you are all set. Cliff and Sayaka are the hosts and they are always friendly, helpful and run the place with great efficiency. The rooms have everything you need, but do not expect the Ritz. They are comfortable, warm, with great views. Note, there is no TV, which is great, as you are there to ski, eat, drink and bond with your family. If you want a tv, I suggest you stream some movies in advance. The food, especially at dinner is delicious. A real highlight of the year. There is always a vegetarian option. A three course meal every night. Kransky on a roll at lunch with a beer. The wine list is spectacular. During this Covid season, everything worked perfectly and it was very smooth, although we missed the usual live entertainment. Cliff's trivia was lots of fun.
It is a consistent quality experience, year on year. After 15 years, this is part of my family's year that we look forward to from December onwards. We will be back next year (twice, if we win the snowman competition!!)

Terrific in all respects

The Sundeck has many pluses - the accommodation, the location, the food and the staff. We had a very enjoyable stay. The motel is large with seperate spaces if you choose to hang out in the bat or sit and relax on comfy lounges.

Great stay!

The Sundeck is in a great location and on front valley. Weather meant we had some days where skiing was minimal, but Cliff, Sayaka and the team looked after us. Meals were great and everyone friendly.

Great week

Great place, great views, great food, great wine, great access just a great place to stay. Take a power board and usb adapters would be my only suggestion, there was only one power point in the room and we and trouble keeping technology going but not that big a deal.
