Just a really nice, quaint and cozy home with oodles of charm and delight. The bedroom was tidy and quiet and the Q. S. bed - fantastic. The ensuite seemed brand new. The rest of the 'home' was delightfully decked out with period paraphernalia such as Royal wedding dresses and suchlike. The main theme of the residence is LIGHTHOUSES though. So if you're looking for something a little different, but with lots of unexpected surprises ... here 'tis! Janice and John were perfect hosts and went out of their way to help settle in and enjoy their little masterpiece of accommodation.

If you're after "quiet AND interesting'", this BnB is for you. Museum-level accommodation with pizazz and charm.

This is a lovely place to stay and many of the reviews older than 2016 do not do the new owner justice. 

This is a great place to stay in a unique and historic house. Our room was spacious, clean and thoughtfully decorated. 

The breakfast selection was extensive and plentiful, so we could choose a variety of options including toasts, fresh fruit and cereals. 

Everything provided was very thoughtful. 

Wonderful place, under new management since 2016

The whole team of four stayed at Tara House the night of the 14th of April. Totally magical house and and garden. Well thought out breakfast catering and convivial conversation with the host. Would totally recommend Tara House to all and sundry.

Tara House home away from home for the Someone Like Thomas Banks team

We just stopped for one night on our way to Melbourne. We found there was a friendly atmosphere and a nice decorated Victorian house. A nice sleeping room, good breakfast in an historical dining room and an open living room with burning chimney. The owner was helpful and friendly.

Stop over for one night

We arrived reasonably late on a Friday evening. The host/owner had been drinking in the guest lounge with another couple, and invited us to join them. We chatted for another hour or two. The conversation was interesting and wide-ranging, and more wine was consumed by everyone. I noticed that our host was becoming increasingly drunk, and with that, increasingly condescending and belligerent. During the course of a discussion about a subject that could be described as borderline political, both I and my partner expressed views that our host did not agree with. His response was to tell us to "Shut up", and included a profanity which I cannot repeat on this website. We had at all times been polite - this outburst was completely unprovoked and unwarranted. I was extremely shocked and distressed, and immediately left the room. My partner and I discussed leaving the B&B immediately, but it was nearly midnight, and we weren't sure we could find alternate accommodation at that time of night. We stayed until the morning, at which time my partner confronted the owner, who apparently had been so drunk he could not even remember the incident. He said he would not charge us for the room, but when we returned home on Sunday we found that the credit card had, in fact, been charged. 

Our evening was well and truly spoiled, and we were forced to find alternative accommodation for the following night, as there was no way we could spend a second night at Tara House. This was a weekend away we had been anticipating for some time, and the behaviour of the host was, frankly, horrifying. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

An extremely bad experience

We found Tara House a little difficult to find arriving in Bairnsdale just after dark, and once we were there it was a but unclear where to park. However, we had a fantastic impression once we were inside. We were upgraded to either the 'king' or 'premium' room which looked stunning, and indeed the property was tastefully and intricately furnished throughout with a Victorian period charm. However, despite the heater in our room and also the fireplace in the lounge giving the impression of warmth and cosiness, we felt the general heating was only adequate at best during our April autumn stay - it was suggested to us to close the bathroom door to preserve the warmth in our room. While the following is probably not a fair reflection on Tara House, my wife found it difficult to sleep due to an allergy to something in the room (most likely cleaning products used) and we didn't have an asthma puffer on us - so if you are sensitive to that sort of thing, make sure you come prepared. Breakfast was good with gluten-free options readily available. Phillip the host was very good - friendly and hospitable without being intrusive or overbearing, happy to share his local knowledge of nearby attractions, and accommodating to our baby even though it appeared families aren't his usual clientele.
