The first hotel post communism in Berat.  The rooms are slightly better than average.  What makes the hotel is the dining.  Dinner and breakfast was excellent from the delicious local specialties to the intoxicating beverages to the fair prices but most of all the attentive service.  The location is central to all sights.  Would I stay here again if in Berat?  Yes, of course.  Would I recommend it to others?  Yes, of course

The Dining (especially the delicious & abundant breakfast) Makes the Stay 

I can't praise my stay in Hotel Mangelem enough. One night last year, two this time and I cannot praise the stay highly enough. The owner, the staff, the room, were superb.
I have travelled to many places, but in my opinion, no hotel that  I ever stayed in, came close to the standard of service and friendliness, that I received in Hotel Mangelem.

Super Hotel. Super People!

Excellent hotel in the center of Berat on walking distance from both the river and the castle. The rooms were nice, the hospitality outstanding. The breakfast on the rooftop terrace a good start for the day.

Fantastic hotel! The location is perfect, the hotel is extremely charming, the rooms are so beautiful and staff incredible kind. Breakfast is amazing! 
Just go there in Berat!
The prices are also fair for the amenities.
This hotel was the house where after the 2 World War the allies decided the future of Albania. So you smell history all over!

Perfect hotel to stay in Berat

What a wonderful welcoming hotel. Our first time in Albania. The hotel was very comfortable, steeped in history. Extremely helpful staff. Wonderful location near the castle and all Berat has to offer.

Family from London thoroughly enjoyed the warm welcome and fabulous breakfast at this historical hotel in Berat.

From the initial communication with Klisman at Hotel Mangalemi we knew we were in good hands. Klisman was available via email and WhatsApp. He arranged for an excellent safe driver to collect us from our hotel in Ohrid and drive us the 3.5 hours there for a reasonable price and later to transfer us to our next destination in Durres.

We booked a quiet courtyard facing room on the second floor of the original building which was clean and comfortable with a balcony where we enjoyed the welcome drink and sweet. Great charm but nothing fancy - which was fine for us. Very reasonably priced. 

It was a short walk through a historical grand hallway to the great terrace with a view breakfast. Food was delicious. Eggs freshly made to order. Particularly loved the rice pudding! However did not love the coffee machine which was clearly spewing instant coffee. Totally undrinkable to me. Fortunately the next  morning this problem was resolved when I mentioned my dismay to Klisman and was able to order real cappuccinos from their separate bar. These were brought up to me hot and full of flavour. Well worth the small extra charges. This option should have been explained on our first morning. 

The position is great for nearby restaurants - see review of Friendly House - and river, but a very unpleasant steep walk up to the castle area. No steps. Just steep road. With hindsight we should have caught a taxi up there. We’re not as young and fit as we once were…

Berat was the highlight of our time in Albania. A beautiful village whose architecture has remained in harmony and is a delight to admire both day and night. We enjoyed a meal at a newly opened beautiful restaurant called The House of Arts which hasn’t yet been listed on TripAdvisor Advisor that I can see. They catered to our vegetarian diet brilliantly with delicious vegetable soup (already on menu) and a specially made vegetarian risotto enjoyed with a carafe of their excellent house white wine. An easy walk from Hotel Mangalemi, it’s one of the last buildings overlooking the river on the main drag.

Go to Berat and stay at this quaint hotel. Contact Klisman directly for kind professional service. Two days was just right for exploring this pleasant village and the castle grounds above.

Central, comfortable and charming

We were a group of 16 and were immediately welcomed to this family run hotel with a shot of blackberry raki and a walnut Turkish delight whilst the hotel collected the luggage from our large bus which couldn't make it up the cobbled street.  It is a small labyrinth of rooms, some with wooden balconies some arranged through a stone clad courtyard and garden where the cat sprawled lazily on the swing seat.  My room had traditional wooden windows and curtains and many local touches.  The family own the shop opposite and the managers wife makes many of the products, in particular the hand made serviettes woven on a small loom.  The restaurant is run by two highly efficient and friendly waiters who managed to cope with a full restaurant for supper and we're back again first thing for the breakfast which included all the normal things that Albanian hotels offer, plus strawberries.  It is a delight to stay here and relax in the comforts of traditional hospitality.

A delightful stay

Restored in its original setting and design. I stayed in Room 16 which was large and bright with a King Bed and very comfortable. Super clean and an excellent breakfast was included.  While the hotel is not in the Castle, I believe it is the best location as it is accessible by car or foot and close to everything.  I would highly recommend

Great choice when visiting Berat!

This was my favorite hotel in Albania. The staff was helpful and friendly and we felt welcome.  The furnishings were elegant and our room had a gorgeous wood carved ceiling. We were very comfortable and had a lovely breakfast. They arranged to have our laundry done and although we were told we would get it back the next day, it was ready the same evening. I highly recommend staying here and I want to go back. 

Fantastic and beautiful!

We were so fortunate to choose to stay at this charming hotel in the historic heart of Berat.  As soon as we arrived, we were welcomed by the wonderful young couple who own the hotel. Everything was perfect - lovely rooms with every amenity, old world charm with modern updates, great restaurant, quiet outdoor space . . . but it was the hospitality that made this stop the highlight of our trip!
