My family and I had an amazing experience staying at the B and B at the monostary.  From booking, communicating with the Guestmaster,  check in and our stay.
The apartment was spacious, so clean and organized, and welcoming.  There were breakfast foods dtocked for us which was perfect, plenty of utensils for cooking, comfortable beds, beautiful dining room table for meals...  I was beyond pleased with everything. 
My family hopes to return in the Summer and stay there once again.
Thank you for making the Chicago visit wonderful.

Such a wonderful experience

We stayed in the Loft Apartment for two nights while visiting Chicago. This private apartment is spacious and a hot breakfast is provided each morning by the Benedictine Monks who run the B&B. There are a lot of fun restaurants to try within easy walking distance in this historic neighborhood. We would highly recommend it to anyone and hope to stay again when we next visit the city.

Very enjoyable experience at Benedictine B&B!

I stayed with my family for a weekend trip and it was perfect for us. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and filling! The monks were very friendly and accommodated my being vegetarian with no problem. The rooms were clean and comfortable with real character. Would definitely recommend.

Great place to stay!

Overview:
Run by Benedictine monks, they have two suites, an upstairs one with breakfast, and a ground level one with ingredients for breakfast left in your refrigerator. You don't really interact with any of the monks, even for check out, once you get a tour on the day of your arrival. You can go to a sung Catholic mass at 6:35 AM in the morning (45 minutes long), and to many other daily offices (10 minutes long). There is free parking behind the church that you access from a utility lane. It is a few steps to the B&B gate from the parking. Perfect place to stay with a young child if you intend to get about by car. There is a small public park across from the church with playground equipment. The area feels safe. There is a moderate amount of foot traffic all times during the day. Check in time for the B&B is limited to two time slots in the afternoon. This is a good place to stay with a young child because the Loft suite is above the church, and running around or crying in the middle of the night won't disturb other patrons as you might at a hotel, although the Loft might be above the monks' sleeping quarters, not sure. This B&B was perfectly located for the things we wanted to do and the places we wanted to go. We would happily stay there every time we visit Chicago. 
Transportation
Short distance from exit 290 on Interstate 55, this B&B is in Bridgeport, which neighbors Chinatown. It was15 minutes southward to the Museum of Science and Industry and 15 minutes northward to the Art Institute of Chicago by car. To get to the downtown Loop area by public transportation, you take the #8 bus from the CVS intersection (CVS on corner of Halstead and 31st St, about 3 blocks away) to Halstead station on the Orange Line, then it is one stop, say, to Roosevelt station. You canNOT get bus passes at the CVS. There is a gas station across from the CVS. 
Rooms
There is free wifi. We stayed in the Loft which has 3 bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, a simple kitchen, and a bathroom. The heating works really well. The hot water is hot. Hardwood floors throughout with area rugs. The bathroom has shower, no bathtub. Bathroom has hair dryer and iron.
Two of the bedrooms have full sized beds, the third has a single. Beds and pillows were very comfortable. There is a suitcase rack, as well as 5 hangers and alarm clock in each bedroom. They have a Pack and Play to use as a crib and bedding. 
The living room has a sofa, rocking chair, 3 regular chairs, a rug, a TV and DVD player, books to read, two jigsaw puzzles, tourist brochures, maps, and a small table you can set up for using as a desk.  For the Loft, you have to go up 33 steps, with several landings. There is a window fire escape. 
The kitchen area splits the bathroom end from the living room end, and is raised up about 6 inches, so you have to step up and down every time you go from one end of the suite to the other. Although there is plenty of ambient light, you need to be careful going to the bathroom in the middle of the night not to trip over the threshold of the raised kitchen floor. In the kitchen there is a small refrigerator with freezer compartment, a microwave, vertical toaster, glass chopping board, and 12 cup Mr. Coffee coffee maker, electric tea kettle, ground coffee and a large assortment of black teas, plus a few herbal. There is no stove for stove top cooking. 
Breakfast
A delicious hot breakfast is left on the landing at 8 AM on a large platter with a pitcher of orange juice, a plate of fresh fruit, and individual pots of Yoplait. You get a copy of the Chicago Tribune every morning. Breakfast varied each day and was more than ample for our appetites. The hot platter had some sort of breakfast meat, a starch (e.g., strawberry pancake, blueberry biscuit, French toast, corn tortilla, hash browns), and eggs. They even varied the ceramic platter to match the food.
Groceries, Laundry 
Simple groceries can be bought from large CVS at corner of Halstead and 31st St, about 3 blocks away/ I washed the dishes and flatware we used. There is a laundromat next to the church. 
Nearby Restaurants
Kimski is the closest restaurant and is supposedly Polish-Korean fusion. It is more like a bar (loud music, young people, a wide variety of alcoholic beverages, including a Hot Toddy) that serves Anglified Korean food to go with your drink. I got the Kopo (Korean Polish) beef, which is Bulgogi beef in a buttered grilled bread bun. It tasted great, but left me hungry. Most of the food is spicy. Kimski is connected on the inside to the liquor store Maria next door. There is no sign anywhere that says Kimski except in small white letters on the door, so it is best to look for Maria. There are two Chinese restaurants near the CVS.  The CVS mall also has a Dunkin Donut and Subway sandwich shop. Other than that, restaurant-wise, there doesn't seem to be much within walking distance. We drove to all of our dinner destinations. As you drive north along Halsted Street, there are a lot of restaurants on either side, and also along 31st going towards the lake. Just west of the downtown Loop area on Halsted street is the Greek area with multiple Greek restaurants, and is only 12 minutes away from the B&B during light traffic hours. Many of the Greek restaurants have free valet parking. Chinatown is even closer to drive to.

great place to stay with young child

Stayed with family for 3 nights for our first visit to Chicago and couldn't have asked for a nicer place!  Both the monastery monks and people in the neighborhood were genuinely helpful, beyond what I've seen in other large cities.  We stayed in the upper loft apartment, and the rooms and all furnishings were extremely comfortable.  The breakfast each morning (in the loft apt only) was great and more than enough to eat!  The Bridgewater neighborhood in Chicago was our only concern before we left, but we easily walked to and from the L train during the day and after dark with two teenage girls, and quickly made it to and from Chicago to see the sights.  The neighborhood had plenty of small restaurants and coffee places, and all places we stopped were very helpful (the restaurant Kimski across the street was definitely worth visiting; the chef offered plenty of sightseeing stops when we told him we were from out of town!).  Also free parking off the street at the monastery was extremely helpful.  We'll definitely try this bed and breakfast again if we visit Chicago, whether family or a couple!

Definitely try this B&B in Chicago!

The reviews were right. This monastery bed & breakfast was a beautiful experience for me. I reserved by leaving messages in email & phone. Brother Ezekiel was always prompt in answering my queries. The Loft apt. where we stayed is at the rear of the church. Parking is on the gravel lot also at the rear of the church. It is right in front of the entrance to our apartment. It has 3 bedrooms, my brother & I had our own rooms. It was clean, very spacious, peaceful atmosphere. We got our free wifi. The genial and friendly Brother Ezekiel had a lot of recommendations for restaurants, etc. The breakfast was out of this world delicious. They were like rolls of beef quesadillas with scrambled eggs on the side, orange juice, fresh cut pineapples and strawberries, yogurt, fresh doughnuts, all big portions and delicious! For what we paid for these are all a great deal. When I went to hear mass in church at 10 AM I got to hear the monks' chant which was a great blessing for me. I hope to return some time & for more than one overnight stay. This place is like 7 minutes away to Chinatown (driving). 

Hidden Gem B&B in Chicago

It appeals to me to give my money not to a big hotel corporation, so when traveling through chicago for one night, I decided to book this B&B run by the Benedictine Monks at the Monastery of the Holy Cross. I had no idea what to expect. While the reservation process takes a bit more effort than usual (the guest brother who runs the B & B, while chatty, friendly, welcoming, etc, is unavailable at certain times during the day due to prayer schedule. This impacts when you can check in, but not the checking out).  Me and my teenage daughters loved the Loft apartment. It had three bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. it was well stocked with books, magazines, chicago info, make-up remover towelettes, fluffy towels, excellent herbal tea, etc. The neighborhood is south chicago, but don't let that stop you. Lots of people of all ages and races walking around during the day, and only two blocks from a hip coffeehouse and some of the best chinese in Chicago. (we walked to a chinese restaurant three blocks away). But the bonus here, if you're open to spiritual experiences in many guises, is the opportunity to sit in the beautiful sanctuary and listen to the brothers chant their prayers/mass. I am Lutheran, and really enjoyed the quiet, meditative experience of sitting in the back and letting peace wash over me for the compline service. Highly recommended. We'll be going back next time we're in Chicago.

Hip neighborhood near Chinatown, clean and spacious apartments

We stayed here two nights when arriving in Chicago and then a third night in our return.  This is run by Brother Ezekiel in the momentary nearby.
We stayed in the garden apartment which was large consisting of 2 bedrooms, lounge, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and a terrace overlooking the Garden.  It was comfortably furnished and very homely.  This is self catering but the fridge is left stocked with fresh milk, eggs, bacon sausages, yogurts etc.so we were able to have a leisurely breakfast sitting on the terrace.  There is a very nice coffee shop left out of the front door and left again.  There is an allocated off road parking slot just outside.
Brother Ezekiel made us feel very welcome and made time to talk to is.
We would recommend.


Homely garden apartment 

We were looking for a place to stay on the south side of Chicago, and discovered this gem by pure chance.  The bed and breakfast is run by the Benedictine Monks.  The two apartments are in a building separate from the monastery. There is a gate that is locked at all times that guests are provided a key for.  The parking lot is right outside the building and seemed safe. The top floor is the “Loft Apartment” and the bottom is the “Garden Apartment.”  We stayed at the Garden Apartment which had two bedrooms, one with a twin size bed and the other with a full size bed.  There is a futon in the family room that could possible fit two more people.  I am not sure why those staying in The Loft get breakfast provided for them, and those staying in the Garden Apartment are provided with self-serve items to cook their own breakfast, but we were happy to have any type of breakfast at all.  The apartment is clean and the beds comfortable and provided a nice place for us to hang out with local family.

Nice Alternative to Local Hotels

I needed a place to stay for one night in Chicago.  I found this B & B online and decided to make a reservation.  It was OK, not great but not bad either.  I stayed in the Garden apartment.  It has a kitchen, living room, bathroom and 2 bedrooms.  It is a short walk from the bus stop.  I think it was Father Edward who showed me to the apartment after I knocked on the monastery door.  He seemed really nice.  Breakfast is self-serve.  There was orange juice, bread, cereal, milk, sausage as well as all necessary pots, pans, bowls and utensils.  I would prefer some place a bit closer to Amtrak's Union Station in the future.
