The Kings Arms

It’s a very friendly pub and a delight to visit. Food and bar staff were excellent. Very dog friendly. Located in the heart of the village with a large, well kept garden (with a stream). They have events from time to time and live music on occasion.

This is a gem of a bed and breakfast place.  The rooms back onto the pub yet are completely independent to the pub with each room having its own entrance.  Very cosy, yet large.  Excellent bathroom with shower.  Toiletries were superb.  Good selection of teas and coffees with kettle.  Bottled water also provided.  Separate heater if cold and the main heating is not on.  Portesham is a lovely, tranquil village with easy access to good walks and hikes.  If you are looking for an above budget place away from the hustle of society, yet easy access to main roads, come here.  It is also on the main bus route to Weymouth and other towns.  Breakfast is across in the Duck Cafe.  This does delicious cafe menus and the food and drinks are served HOT - not lukewarm ... exacly how food and beverages that are supposed to be hot should be served.  I hope to be staying here again in the future.  Dog friendly too.  Friends tell me the pub food is good too.  

Found the Kings Arms by chance when doing an on-line search for a hotel in that area. The accommodation was excellent and the food first class. Breakfast (which I can highly recommend!) was served in the nearby farm shop and was included in the price.  We received a warm welcome and there was a great atmosphere in the pub. We will definitely be back.

We were in Dorset in November having visited Durdle Door  and wanted dinner.  We searched near Abbotsbury for somewhere to eat and stumbled upon The Kings Arms in Portisham.  Their winter menu is fantastic - what a great chef!  Apparently they’ve just had new kitchen staff in.  All serving staff are very friendly and efficient.
I had grilled goats cheese to start and Salmon with baked butternut squash and purple sprouting broccoli as a main.  The goats cheese was way above what one would expect in a country pub and hotel.  The salmon again was exquisite- subtle flavours and beautifully presented.
Definitely recommend this as a restaurant.  We didn’t stay in the hotel but with such great staff my guess is it would be great too.

Spent an evening here recently with friends. Had wonderful service from both waiting staff and food. Sea Bass with noodles and stir fry veg with coconut cream was delicious. Highly recommend it.  Would return at a flash

Lovely village location for a one or two night stay. Great accommodation separate from the pub. We stayed one night and had dinner and drinks in the pub. All the staff were really friendly. 
Good Breakfast next door at Ducks Farm Shop where we also picked up supplies for the rest of our holiday. Would recommend, and would definitely stay again.

We had a delicious Sunday lunch in the garden. We both had pork and it was served with 7 different types of veg and a top quality apple sauce. The waitress willingly fetched us extra gravy. Thoroughly enjoyed it. 

Came here with my mum for a quick drink. Very young but professional and friendly staff. I’d particularly highlight the man on the desk. Only downside was the amount of wasps in the garden although there’s little the pub could probably do about it. I did miss the ducks though that used to be on the stream.

We were a family of six and a dog who booked an early evening meal on a Monday.  We had a number of different choices from the menu all of which were excellent.  The service and atmosphere was most pleasant, and the food delicious.

We went there with our 3 year old son. He loved playing with the board games. The pub decor is lovely, really cosy and the staff were welcome. The food was fantastic. No complaints at all. Definitely recommend.

We enjoyed a weekend away in this very pretty and unspoiled Dorset village nestled below the downs.  Our room was one of three attached to the side of the pub up about half a dozen concrete steps.  The room was quite spacious and generously furnished with a comfy king-sized bed, a couple of chairs and a small desk, as well as decent (free) wi-fi and tea/coffee making facilities.  When we arrived, the room was a little chilly - apparently the pub had not received an expected gas delivery - but a small oil-filled radiator was quickly provided and the room was soon lovely and warm.   

Breakfasts are  served in the Duck Farm Shop and Cafe just a few yards away and there is good menu featuring local ingredients.

We ate in the busy pub both evenings, and the food was very good too. 

Both teams of staff in the Kings Arms and Ducks were helpful and friendly, and we would happily return.

Off the beaten track

Our stay was as expected. The accommodation was clean, tidy and well laid out. There was a kettle in the room and plenty of milk, Tea and coffee.  Staff were very friendly and helpful. My only criticism is the lack of communication from the accommodation. I had phoned and left a message on the answerphone regarding a stay but I received no reply. I therefore  phoned and spoke to a member of staff who  booked our stay, took my card details and told me a confirmation email would be sent. I nevet received it.  I then emailed again and asked for confirmation, I never received it.!  I was e,expecting to turn up yo find we didn't have  booking. I don't like that!

Superb BandB for cathetic "me time"

We recently stayed in a holiday cottage in Portesham very close to the Kings Arms which we frequented a lot! Very nice staff, mostly very good food with a few exception. The menu was quite small (especially if it is the only local place to eat!) but we found something for everyone. Can recommend the cod, the lamb chops, the pesto linguine. The bread board and seafood board were also very good. The burger and chicken were disappointing on the days we visited but the staff dealt with replacements very quickly and pleasantly. I can't comment on the accommodation.

Superb food in a real character pub in the West Country - The Kings Arms in Portisham.

Had a great weekend at the Kings Arms in Portesham Dorset. It situated ideally for visiting local interests. Room was very comfortable and clean throughout. Restaurant was very good with reasonable priced meals and good choice of real ales. Will definitely visit again

Went for Sunday lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday. 3 others in the party had roast pork, whilst I went for roast beef.
At keast 50% of the beef I received was fatty or grissle, and was totally inedible. I couldn't even cut one of the slices as my knife would not cut it!
I toldtge waitress who apologised profusely. I then ordered a rice pudding as I was still hungry, and got a small ramekin which cost the princely sum of £8.50!
Got the bill, and sure enough was charged full price for my inedible roast beef dinner!
Needless to say I will never go back there!
