Very interesting building, very quiet. Waggon and Horse we had an excellent Thai meal.

I stayed at Ollivers Farm for one night on Saturday, 28 May 2022. I booked based on Tripadvisor.co.uk member ratings and favourable reviews.

Ollivers Farm is a delightful medieval farmhouse idyllically set amid fields at Toppesfield, near Halstead. I stayed there to attend the inauguration of Bhakti Marga’s Srinivasa Hindu Temple at Halstead. 

I would recommend several nights' stay at Ollivers Farm if you would like the quintessentially English farmhouse in a tranquil setting.

The Room

I stayed in an exquisitely presented double room with an adjoining bathroom, which echoed the rustic charm of the main farmhouse areas,

The Common Areas

The farmhouse is the personification of a traditional countryside home. Each room was homely and adorned with furniture and artefacts, creating an atmosphere imbued with unique charm.  The garden was everything you would expect from a classic English garden.

The Staff

Susan, the farmhouse’s owner, was a paragon of hospitality and did everything to make me feel at home. I arrived exceptionally late on the night of my stay, and she patiently waited to ensure I could access the farmhouse and settle into my bedroom.

Dining

Susan kindly accommodated my vegetarian diet, and the selection of food at breakfast was superb. 

The Location

Ollivers Farm is quite remote and much easier to reach if you drive. However, taxis are not as available as in Braintree, especially at night and need to be booked well in advance.


Delightful, rustic charm in the English countryside

Booked , paid and day of arrival told no room was available due to error  . 35 mins explaining to someone in the US.Still waiting for my money to be put back into my account……Stressful…… as I spent  the night in the back of my van.

Stress

People helpful and friendly. Access was good as I was working shifts and had to leave early and get back late. Room clean and bathroom modern and very clean.

Nice olde worlds feel, set in glorious countryside

Once round it looked rather special,  however the room and bathroom didn't live up to expectations.
The bedroom was small but needed a deep clean! Luckily the spider was dead!! 
The seperate bathroom was large but also needed a good clean, the shower I guess had not been cleaned for a long time, in fact I decided not to use it !
Breakfast was enjoyable particularly the home made jam, oh and l had cash  to pay the bill a small point that I didn't know until I saw the little sign on the dresser?!
P.S. That glass isn't frosted!!!

Dissapointing! 

It was a very well kept and lovely house to which the rooms were in, with a lovely breakfast and comfortable bed :) Lady even gave us a lift back to our cars which we left at a wedding venue. Very polite and helpful tennants. Wifi was not very good but over all, excellent stay.

Excellent B&B

The only downside i would say is lack of internet and also phone signal. I picked Ollivers because it said free wifi and that it was a farmhouse, i did however come home early because i hardly got any connection when i needed to use it. The location however was very peaceful amd on any other occasion i would have stayed longer

We recently visited here as we were attending a wedding only 5 mins away from the hotel. 

I had previously called for an early check which they lady did say was ok as she didn’t have any guests staying the night before 

When we arrive no one was in we had to wait 10-15 mins before she arrived back

We were shown our room which I can only describe as a step back to the 50s. 

There were tea and coffee facilities but no milk! 

The heater didn’t work properly but we could only turn that on once the kettle had finished 

We then went to have our showers the bathroom we were using had cobwebs from the ceiling and hairs in the sink.  I then had to proceed in the shower with freezing water

We found a old moisturiser cream in the room which actually went out of date in 1995! (Not that we would want to use it but still shouldn’t have been in the room) 

By our own mistake as we were rushing to get to the wedding we forgot to put out our breakfast slip but we did say to the woman 9am would be perfect.  The next morning we went down and nothing was ready she did ask ‘what we wanted’ but at this point I wanted to just leave as it was so cold! 

When we had returned from the wedding there was a note pinned to our door advising us that check out was at 10:30 and she would be going out at 10:45 prompt so basically hurry up

Not a pleasant stay at all and I would not recommend 



Wouldn’t recommend 

Ollivers Farm is a quirky little place and I find it hard to review as it had its pluses and minuses. I can see how some of the other reviewers found the owner a little unwelcoming, but we couldn't grumble. She left a wedding early to greet us and was amicable the following morning when serving breakfast.We were guests at a wedding at The White Hart, which although only a mile away, was not easy to walk to as it's all along country roads so just be aware of that before you stay.I was absolutely dreading the thought of a shared bathroom but I think there is more than one bathroom between the amount of rooms. We were lucky because our room was next to a bathroom and the guest next door to us didn't show up, but I can imagine this being problematic if you were in a rush and there was full occupancy.The room was clean to the extent that the bedding was fresh, floor hoovered and we had a comfortable sleep. However, the properly is extremely old and was full of cobwebs, we even got greeted by a spider the size of my hand the following morning.Breakfast was tasty but really was missing the full English option. Cooked breakfast was bacon, fried slice, egg and tomato. We would have loved sausages and mushrooms. There was a lovely selection of homemade jams which were so tasty and cereal as well. The option to top up juice would have been welcomed.Overall, not a bad stay. But I don't think it was worth the £85 we paid. However, we had little choice in the area.
