*NOT SAFE! ESPECIALLY FOR SOLO TRAVELERS. ESPECIALLY FOR FEMALE TRAVELERS. I WAS HARASSED FOR 4 DSYS BY THE GUIDE WHO ALSO GOT DRUNK AND ALMOST SLEPT THROUGH ONE TOUR, FOUGHT WITH A GUEST AND LEFT US ALONE IN THE FOREST BECAUSE HE GOT MAD. THERE IS NO FIRST AID KIT ON SIGHT. THE GUIDE TAKES ZERO SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, HAS NO FIRST AID TRAINING. WE ARE LUCKY WE ARE ALIVE AND UNHARMED. PAY MORE FOR A BETTER TOUR.*

First, I didn't even know this was the lodge I was staying at. I thought I'd booked with Sandoval Lake Lodge. I think Edgar, the guy who sold me the tour, maybe sent me thr wrong info on purpose. There was no organization, poor communication between sales and operations. They bring you from the airport to the house of Senora Carmen, not even an office. No one speaks English. Our guide, Elmer, began the tour by asking a couple in my group if the guy liked looking at other women or if he had girlfriends on the side right in front of his wife. This was how it began. The lodge is in a beautiful location. The rooms and lodge is very basic but was clean and comfortable. The staff onsite were kind and respectful. Unfortunately, our guide was terrible. There were no safety precautions taken. He knew only the most basic details about the area, so mainly he served to taxi us around by boat and lead hikes pointing at animals and saying the name without further explanation. He was more interested in asking me about what kind of man I'd want to date, offering to impregnate me if I wanted a child, telling me he had 5 or 6 girlfriends who he'd impregnated and left to care for the children...he was relentless. The saving grace is that the rainforest is beautiful and the other guests I traveled with were so kind and helpful. I was supposed to stay an extra day, but I feared that if I stayed an extra day, something bad would happen. I was to be the only guest, a woman from another country with all men onsite and one who was constantly flirting and making sexual innuendo. I have traveled in Peru, lived here for a year and have Unfortunately experienced this kind of behavior many times, but given how dependent you are on a guide in the Amazon, this was bad. When one guest confronted the guide about the fact that he was still drunk from the night before during a tour we woke at 4:30am for, the guide said our tour was over and left us in the forest. Luckily, we had a marked trail back to the boat. But if we had been somewhere else, this could have been very dangerous. On arrival at the lodge, I had to borrow the guide phone, very bad, almost no service or way to connect to outside world in this location. I spoke with Edgar and he said they would send a new guide, but they did not and we continued with Elmer. When the tour ended, I asked for a refund for my last day and reported the bad behavior. Senora Carmen laughed at my complaints and lied that they sent extra "provisions" for my last day. This was not true...neither Edgar who sold the tour nor Elmer were aware of my extra day until I explained it again to them. So I know they did not spend anything else. After I left the "office" in anger, Carmen found me om the street and gave me only 1/3 of what I was owed. 

It is a shame because this lodge is an example of abuse in tourism in Peru. This is not safe for travelers and is bad for the Tambopata region. It is a beautiful location, and we were able to see many animals, but we left with no understanding of the region or plants we saw beyond the most rudimentary details. This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and for me, I spent the entire time on edge trying to shut down unwanted romantic/sexual advances from someone who was supposed to be creating a safe environment for exploration in this stunning setting.

NOT SAFE, DO NOT GO

My husband and I stayed in Maloka lodge for 2 nights.
Pros: close to the Sandoval lake
Good food- a plate of mainly rice, chicken and one extra thing
Kind people
Nice setting area in front of the jungle were you have a chance to see some monkeys
We saw beautiful different birds and animals 

Cons: we booked through an operator in Cusco and he gave us a schedule of the attractions included, when arrived to the lodge there was lack of communication between the operator and and the guid so we didn’t get all of what we promised of. 
The guid was fine but not enthusiastic, we walked through the jungle or the lake and pointed to the birds/ animals. Explained a little bit about the trees. 
The rooms are not very clean, basic and not complicated free of mosquitoes. No cleaning service, no keys for the main door so you just leave your room open. 
They had water refill, but it was tasty and not pleased to drink it but had to since no other option is available.
No market or other close place to buy snacks so bring a lot with you. 
The electricity worked only 4 hours at night, partly during dinner and night walk so we had couple of hours to charge what necessary (had only two plugs- one for fan and one extra)


Nice location, below average lodge 

Never ever stay in this lodge. They ruined my memory of the Peruvian Amazonas. They lack organization with the reservations. As they don't manage rooms well, they accommodate people in another lodge nearby (Koshiri Eco Lodge), which is the most disgusting place I have ever seen. The quality of the food is terrible. In three days, our meals were based on yuca and rice and the portions were rather small. Basically, we starved for the 3 days of our stay. The staff is sick and tired of dealing with customer's complaints they can't solve as it's all the manager's fault. The manager, Mr Elmer, is despicable, rude and disrespectful with guests. He rejected talking to us when we requested for responsibilities and on top of that, he abandoned us in the lake without notice as he found out we had written a formal complaint in the park. In fact, if you ask in IPeru in Puerto Maldonado, they will show you the endless list of complaints they have been getting in the recent years.  DON'T LET THESE PEOPLE RUIN YOUR JUNGLE HOLIDAYS. 

NIGHTMARISH

We were supposed to leave the resort by canoe at 7 a.m. and they delayed to 8 a.m. then didn't take us by canoe until 9 a.m., only to find that after we took the first boat ride and hike, there was no motor boat waiting for us to take us to the tuk tuk then airport. Of course there was no boat for us, they made us two hours late!  We missed our international flight. Large holes in the mosquito nets. We were told we were going to see parrots feeding from a clay lick but never did. We don't eat much food but they served way too little amounts of food at every meal. The thinnest woman in our group commented that she wasn't getting enough food, especially since we were hiking during the day. The food was not good. We were prepared to rough it but not get completely lied to and cheated out of a lot of money. Also, everyone in our group paid much different prices for the same amount of days.

Refused to take us back to airport at the time promised, missed our International flight

Great location at Sandoval lake, but the rooms of the lodge are completely run down (no shower head, bathroom door had a hole instead of a door knob, holes in moskito nets) and the food was poor (beef with the texture of shoe soles). The terrace of the main area has never been finished and thus unused concrete pillars stick out of the ground. Further, the guide did bot bother to speak English although he knew that we understand very little Spanish.

The accommodation was overall good, especially consider that we were in the reserve Sandoval Lake area deep in the Amazonian basin. The view of the lake was breathtaking! You will find many creatures around the lake by exploring in different times in a day. The food at the lodge was fine, if you are a vegetarian you can inform them to prepare your diet in advance. Pack & bring your own personal care products to the lodge - they provided only soap and toilet paper.
