I had an amazing time at the Surfing Turtle Lodge. The island is beautifull and waking up there was very peacefull. I like that they use local ingredients for the food, the pina colada is a real recomondation! When I was there it was not super busy (low season), but that gave me time to really relax and chill, which it is a perfect place for. I like the hut where you can practise yoga (next to the sea), there you also have the best sunset views! I slept in the dorm which does not have vans, but is kept cool due to it being open on both sides (with a sort of gauze wall). I dont know how warm it will be when all the beds are taken, but for now it was good! You'll wake up early if you don't put on a sleeping mask, but that is what I loved about the place. I woke up at 6 by the sunset and the beautifull suroudings, which was amazing. Also I really liked the food there. It is a bit more expensive than it would be on the mainland, but since this is an Island and they need to ship it there, I get it.

Easy to get here from Leon , very well looked after the nature . You can surf all day long . Very comfortable rooms and dorms . Food is great and very fresh from local chef’s . 
Every day activity are going on on the beach or near the restaurant . Clean docility’s

The place is absolutely beautiful and the hostel is good if you want to rest and not move from the place. Hence, if you're a Backpacker, this place is a paradise 

But, be aware that :
- there is no other restaurant in the surroundings, except the hostel, and it's expensive and you'll wait an hour for your food.
- they will not clean your room until you're gone and I don't want to remind you that toilet paper goes in a trash bin in Nicaragua
- I did not see the solar power (as described on their website) but I did hear the gas generator.
- If you want to flee, be prepared to ask for a horse and a boat (which can be long) as the hostel is far away on an Island.
- If you plan to rest, take into account that they do like to party on Tuesday.



Not as good as they sell it to me 

This hotel is not recomendable. It is kept very poorly, the restaurant is below average and our bungalow was more of a shag. Staff is Not attending well, you always have to walk over to thema to order something.
The surrounding is stunning and the beach is nice.

Very dissapointing

This place is makes you feel one with nature. Starting from the arrival after crossing a river by boat. You then take a horse cart ride through a beautiful local road. A few minutes later you arrive to a lush property full of palm trees and flowers. As soon as you walk in to main common area you can hear the sound of the waves from the reception. A great place to relax during the day and take part in the festive activities at night.

A great place to relax and be one with nature.

I spent 10 days during X-mas and New Year. It was highly relaxing. Stunning empty beach where little turtles were released twice a day (bunches of almost 80 every time), program run by SOS Nicaragua. I slept 3 nights alone in the big 18-beds dorm on the first floor (10 $) : although many comments on previous tripadviser's reviews are correct, nevertheless when somebody is sleeping there, a thorough cleaning is done daily, so for me it was perfect. A nice breeze from the sea was entering through the windows protected by mosquito nets. A huge veranda was a good spot to read calmly or to perform yoga. The last 7 days I camped with my tent (5 $). The restaurant is good and not that expensive : 4 $ for big breakfast incl. coffee and milk as much as you want - lunch/dinner around 7 $ or fish 13 $. As I was eating only one meal a day at 3/4 pm (apart from breakfast), I preferred to cross the river and eat good fish in the ranchos at the pier in Poneloya. There was good music at the reception all day long but luckily not too loud : it didn't reach the beach nor the upstair dorm. Lots of local staff for few guests, max. 40 persons at tthe beginning of the year. Ping pong table, cards, volley ball net, surfing boards available. Not anymore (or not yet) a party hostel. Highly recommended !

Just Perfect !

Super nice place. The surf was epic, although the rip current was very strong, but man, what waves :). As for the Yoga,,, we arrived 2 weeks after the seasons ended so there were no yoga instructor... however, the staff were really helpful and sorted yoga classes for us either way. Food was nice and the people lovely... I can recommend this place to anyone who wants to relax and have a great time:)
Also, the flor the cana rum will keep you happy ,,,,

Very chill place, far away from the villages. Empty beach just for the guests, but bad waves for surfing - don’t expect much (for beginners will be fine). Delicious food, even if you have to wait sometimes for 1h (when it is full booked). The way to get their is not so hard as it might look - just go by chicken bus from Leon to the first stop in Poneloya, find Chepa’s bar and ask for a boat1$). After the horse will be waiting for you (free) or you can walk 10 minutes (the pass is well marked).
We have stayed in the bamboo hut - amazing experience  to feel the beach vibes.

Chill, relax, ocean and surf

I first stayed at surfing turtle lodge in November of 2017. I’d heard about it through a friend, and it sounded magical. I gave up a prepaid night at another hostel in las peñitas to see what STL had to offer, and I wasn’t disappointed! The staff were lovely and inclusive (which is huge when you’re a solo traveller), the food came out exactly as I ordered it, I saw the whole life cycle of turtles during my first time there! It was amazing. So amazing in fact that when I returned to Leon, I made some friends, told them about the place and came back again two weeks later! 

There were organized games and party nights but it was also easy to escape the scene and enjoy nature in all its untouched glory. The volunteers became close friends of mine and I didn’t want to leave! 

After everything that happened politically in 2018 it broke my heart to see the state Nicaragua was in. I was travelling around the area again and was there just as surfing turtle reopened during the first week of December in 2018. I became a volunteer and got to witness firsthand all the work and love that goes into this place. I have stayed in literally every dorm, private room, cabaña and cabin you can stay in on the property, and I’ve never had an issue with any of the accommodations.

My Spanish is pretty embarrassingly bad for someone who has spent over a year in Latin America, but I was never excluded from anything and was welcomed warmly by everyone. You have to appreciate nature if you want to stay here. There’s lovely dogs and cats on the property that became my best friends, there’s crabs who make surprise appearances on the beach as you walk, and of course the turtles. We released many turtles every time I stayed there, the season typically runs October to February so if that’s why you’re going try to plan accordingly. 

Ask Yader for a mojito and a quick game of uno, he’s the champion! And also Alex will help you become a pro on the slack line, and on the volleyball court! The ladies in the kitchen and behind the front desk are so sweet, and every employee just wants to see you smile! 

I absolutely cannot wait to return for my third time maybe later this year. If you have the chance to stay here, take it!

Loved it so much I couldn’t stay away!

First, I really appreciate the ecotourism aspect of this place. That's great, but it seems to be an excuse to cut back on every other part of the experience. The common areas and beach are very nice, but the surf is very poor. 

Staff were nice, but generally uninterested in helping both before and during our stay. I had some questions about the lodge, so I tried sending an email, but it was never answered. I called about ten times over 6 hours before finally getting someone to answer the phone. While we were there, someone was behind the desk the entire time, not very busy either, so it seems like they were just ignoring phone calls and emails because they didn't want to deal with it.

Restaurant was at the low end of mediocre, very expensive, and food was ridiculously slow to come out. They have a sign saying food can take up to an hour, which is appreciated, but it often took much longer. Even though there was only about eight people staying at the lodge and we were the only ones ordering... 

Here's the big one, the beds are absolutely disgusting. I would be embarrassed to have people pay to sleep on them. I would have ignored everything else and moved on, but I feel like I need to warn others. They are completely covered in gecko poop and some kind of insect eggs. I really wanted it to be sand, but a google search confirmed what I didn't want to believe. Their sheets are small and not fitted, so they almost guaranteed to come off at night. I checked about 6 different beds in the dorm and they were all the same. 

I have stayed hostels all over the world and not seen mattresses that terrible. I have also stayed in many open concept dorms like this, but none of them were covered with excrement and bug eggs. How hard is it at the very least to take out a mattress and brush it off. It's pathetic. We had booked for two nights, but cancelled the second one. Check out the pictures of what you'll be rolling around in while hot and sticky.
