Mt. Rosa Lodge

Our seven-night stay at Mt. Rose Lodge with Michelle & Stuart was one of the highlights of our ten-week trip through New Zealand. Arriving after a long drive, we were warmly welcomed and given a tour of the property. The lodge itself is nestled in Central Otago's Gibbston Valley, where the Kawarau River flows, on an elevated site. From its unique vantage point, you have a spectacular view of the valley, the surrounding mountains and, of course, this being Central Otago, Pinot Noir vines (but not only) as far as the eye can see. 

When you get up in the morning, before breakfast, and in late afternoon, after a return from excursions, there is something truly soothing but also awe-inspiring to have this immense landscape before you. We could not tire of sitting on the terrace and looking out into the valley below... Speaking of breakfast, we looked very much forward to that morning "event" at the Lodge. Everything is fresh local items (juice, yogurts, fresh fruit, butter, "viennoiseries"), including Stuart's famous muesli and homemade scones. With Stuart as barista, the coffee is perfect...Michelle bakes her own bread (and will show you how she does it) and will prepare a bespoke hot breakfast dish of your choice! Fantastic! The lodgings are superb. We stayed in the luxuriously-appointed Queenstown Suite. You can tell that Michelle has invested her interior design and decoration talent to wonderfuil results. The attention to detail, top quality amenities and overall coziness made the suite a haven of relaxation after a day visiting...  

Michelle & Stuart are wonderful, attentive and generous hosts. They instantly make you feel at home, relaxed and comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble! We connected with them very quickly, as they are well-travelled, creating interesting conversations on countries visited, cities where we've lived and the challenges of expat life. Even before our arrival, Michelle & Stuart made useful suggestions to improve our itinerary as we approached Gibbston, but once here, we could count on them for valuable recommendations in the nearby Queenstown area (restaurants, wineries, cafés, sights). They know personnally many of the winery and restaurant managers in the area, and this helps get you that perfect table or special wine tasting! As we left the Lodge after our stay and began to drive north on South Island, we were fortunate to be able to count on their continued assistance in picking a route, a café or a winery. 

So about wines at Mt. Rose Lodge... Michelle & Stuart have their own private vineyard, a "parcelle" of Pinot Noir, and we understand that they are just finishing harvest for 2024 as we write this. We had the pleasure of tasting the 2021 "Bella Rosa", the name of their Pinot. Pinot Noir from Central Otago is unique in depth, character and finesse, and "La Bella Rosa" is up there with the best. Stuart speaks enthusiastically about his 1000 vines of Pinot Noir, its annual cycle and evolution, its challenges, and the pride and satisfaction that comes with turning the grapes into great wine. We learned a lot about all this from him, as we walked through the vines just under the Lodge. As winemakers (with a little help from friends), Michelle & Stuart can also make solid recommendations on visits to surrounding wineries, many that are within walking or cycling distance. If you are "into" wine, Mt. Rose Lodge is an ideal stop in Central Otago. And the pleasure of sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine, overlooking the valley, was hard to beat. 

If you are into amateur astrophysics or simply love stargazing, get Michelle & Stuart to organize an evening with Professor Brian, a Nobel-winning astrophysicist who lives just down the road from the Lodge. With the help of his sophisticated viweing equipment or just by looking at the starry night sky of Central Otago, Professor Boyle will take you on a fascinating journey through galaxies, nebula and star systems, and answer all the questions you never thought you had. Oh, and did we say that Professor Boyle produces his own Pinot Noir, which we had a chance to sample during this night session? A real "must-do" experience!

In essence, Michelle and Stuart are a perfect team and compliment each other so well. They are passionate and you can tell that they really care about their guests having the best experience. If you are considering a visit to South island and to Central Otago, we strongly recommend to spend some time at Mt. Rosa Lodge with Michelle and Stuart. We hope to return one day...

A wonderfui lodge in Central Otago

Mt Rosa Review

We had the most incredible two-night stay at Mt Rosa Lodge. We would highly recommend booking a stay with Stuart and Michelle. You’ll be so happy you discovered this gem near Queenstown.

We were pampered from the moment with arrived with an amazing warm welcome from Michelle, who showed us around the lodge and gave us a brief tour. Homemade chocolate treats were waiting in our room. 

We just got off the Ultimate Hikes Classic Great Walk journey, which included the Milford Track and Routeburn Track combined, so after 95 kilometers walking (60 miles), this was the perfect place to rest our feet, relax in the bath salts and enjoy some spectacular wine from the vineyard while taking in the most gorgeous views.

Just a 20 minutes drive outside Queenstown, we were glad to be away from the hustle and bustle of Queenstown. 

Michelle and Stuart’s homemade breakfasts were the best. Thoughtfully prepared and delicious. We had fresh homemade bread served daily, yogurts, homemade muesli, honey from a neighboring farm, and local butter too. The hot breakfast was outstanding. Coffee doesn’t get much better than Stuart’s barista skills. With local beans from a nearby roaster, Stuart served up the perfect cup every time — lattes, cappuccinos, flat whites and all. It was excellent.

Passionate connoisseurs of food and wine, Michelle and Stuart provided restaurant recommendations near and far, plus suggested many attractions we shouldn’t miss in NZ.

The room was thoughtfully decorated and the bed was one of the most comfortable on our trip. Quiet and peaceful, this is paradise!

We can’t wait to return.

Spectacular in every way. A must book experience!

We were attending a wedding at Mt Rosa Vineyard nearby and stayed at Mt Rosa Lodge.  Stuart and Michelle are amazing hosts with great attention to detail.  The Gibbston Suite was very comfortable with all the amenities that you could need.  Lovely gardens around the Lodge and the views were just amazing.  Breakfasts were delicious and they were very knowledgable with their recommendations on where to go in the surrounding area.  Nothing was too much trouble and we look forward to a return visit.

Perfect!

Our stay ar Mt Rosa Lodge was fantastic.   The lodge is nestled on the hillside with amazing views over the valley.   We arrived to a very warm and friendly welcome  from Michelle and Stu. Their hospitality throughout the stay was amazing,  they were happy to help with reservations and recommendations ensuring we got the best from our stay in Gibbston.
 The lodge and our room were beautiful, very comfortable, every amenity carefully thought of.  Michelle interior design of the property is awesome.
   A walk in the vines chatting about wine with Stu and a little tasting is a must.
 Stu was happy to chauffeur for trips to nearby restaurants and wineries too.  Our stay was over and above what you would expect. We started each day with a beautifully made breakfast every morning using locally sourced products,  the best start to the day !

Fantastic

Hosts Stuart and Michelle are warm and welcoming.  The perfect amount of attentive without being too interrupting.  The room was spacious and comfortable and we slept so well in the bed.  The cherry blossoms and tulips made it a stunning setting.  So peaceful and an amazing night sky.  Stuart's taxi service meant we could book a lovely dinner at Gibbston Valley Lodge and lunch at Amisfield without having to drive.  Their knowledge of the local area and local wines was wonderful!

Peaceful beauty in wine paradise

My husband and I spent 10 amazing nights at Mt Rosa Lodge. We have stayed in many, many luxury B&Bs and hotels around the world and this one is definitely in our top picks.  Michelle and Stuart are fabulous hosts and made us feel so welcome as soon as we stepped out of our car.  The lodge is located higher up and has a wonderful view of their vines.  There are 3 guest rooms, separate from their home.  Our room was beautifully decorated and had a lovely green view, which we loved waking up to.The bathroom has under floor heating which was such a luxury on cold mornings.  The bathroom is very spacious and the products were of the highest quality.  
There is a Pétanque Court which we really enjoyed while having a superb glass of their wine.  Did I mention that they have their own vines!  Their wine, Bella Rosa, is stunning.  Stuart and Michelle are very passionate about their vines and producing the best wine they can.  We came away with a case and will be ordering more in the future. During our stay we did an electric bike ride which Stuart arranged, stopping at Mora Cellar Door for wine tasting and lunch, which was truly yummy.  Stuart arranged a couple of different wine tastings for us and drove us to each location.  He was so helpful and knowledgeable about all things wine. Be sure to visit Kinross, Gibbston and Te Kano Estates, Banockburn.  Stuart also helped us book a trip to Milford Sound.  Another wonderful experience not to be missed.  We also did star gazing with one of Stuart's neighbours, Brian Boyle, a Nobel prize winner. It was an amazing evening and we bought a photo from Brian, which we love.  Brian is so interesting to talk with.  Michelle is truly amazing and her cooking is next level.  From her sourdough bread, to delicious dutch pancakes and homemade granola.  Eating with your eyes first really is true, as her presentation was as good as a 5* restaurant. To top this off, she is a lovely person.
Michelle and Stuart are a perfect team and compliment each other so well.  You can tell that they really care about their guests having the best experience.  Otago and the Gibbstone area is the perfect location for their gorgeous lodge and vineyard. 

Top Class Experience and Stay!

We just spent three incredible nights at Mt Rosa Lodge. It was definitely THE highlight of our 30 day trip. We stayed in about a dozen luxury B&Bs and this one was my favorite. The setting is absolutely spectacular. Their home is set at the top of a hill overlooking their vineyard. They have separate spaces for their guests which are very private and truly gorgeously decorated. Our hosts Stuart and Michelle didn’t miss a detail. From luxury bath products, to nightly turndown service, to the most delicious breakfast and snacks, we were pampered day after day. They have yard games to play while we sat on the back porch drinking their amazing wine (which we ordered by the case to be shipped home after our trip). But the real value here is what amazing people Stuart and Michelle are. During our stay, Stuart drove us around town whenever we needed transfers. He also arranged a special exclusive wine tasting for us when he saw our interest in wine. He also coordinated a night sky activity with one of his neighbors who just happens to be a Nobel prize winner. It was the experience of a lifetime! Michelle made us feel like royalty. Her breakfasts were not to be believed. She baked homemade sourdough bread, made homemade jam from her neighbors fruit, and served us eggs from her neighbors chickens, all presented in what looked like it came from a 3 star Michelin restaurant. She did our laundry for us and put fresh flowers in our room. She is a true artisan and it comes through loud and clear in the gorgeous decor and world class cuisine. Mt Rosa Lodge is a couple’s paradise. If you’re traveling to the Central Otago area, please don’t miss staying there. It’ll be the highlight of your trip. We can’t wait to go back!

Heavenly luxury B&B in Central Otago

Gorgeous location, warm/kind hosts who pour extreme care into everything. Every need we could have was already anticipated. Divine & generous homemade breakfast included, dinner provided on request. Go for their Pinot & venison-sublime!

Exceptional stay

Even though arriving a bit later than expected, the welcome by Ali and Nic was warm and heartfelt. We truly enjoyed our stay in their Gibbston room. It was beautiful; the shared area for the guests is a gem of artwork, for each of which Nic or Ali can offer a story. When you leave there is a secret farewell which you need to hear told by Nic.
