Great central location

A great place in a great location with an ocean view from the bedroom window and welcoming helpful staff, and a good breakfast as well, what more could you ask for.

Fabulous stay

A great stay here - clean and friendly. Great view from rooftop terrace.

Very good!

Booked for 2 adults and 2 children and was given a self contained apartment with sitting area and tiny kitchen plus 2 bathrooms over 2 floors. View was amazing, staff polite and breakfast good. Only caution is upstairs bedroom ceiling low (6 feet) and stairs very narrow so may not be good for those with mobility problems. They do have rooms without these issues so just ask but we felt we had the best rooms here for the view alone. Roof terrace a bonus.

Beautiful Riad, nice room & hot water!! The staff was kind, helpful & very attentive. Hubby had a stomach ache and they got him tea to make him feel better. This is our bad - we didn’t realize that we hadn’t paid online when booking. There was some confusion but they were kind & patient with us. They don’t take credit cards but we were fortunate because we had just enough cash to pay for it.

Lovely Riad & Staff

Liked : We stayed here 17 years ago so were hoping it would live up to our high memories. It did. It is still the same lovely place but now with great internet (recently installed I think). The best bits are views straight out onto the Atlantic ocean and the most delicious breakfasts with fresh orange juice, coffee, pancakes, omelettes, local bread, sometimes pastries, on the roof or wherever you want it. Everyone is extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful. We stayed in the family suite for 10 days and really appreciated the space, with a private sitting room as well as a bathroom for each of the two bedrooms. Comfy beds, good showers, quiet apart from the sound of waves (which never disturbed sleep), no noise of call to prayer, a perfect length of walk from the hustle and bustle of the centre. Owned by the same lovely couple as last time we went. We also stayed at Villa Maroc for two nights while in Essaouira (2.5 times the price; it was meant to be a treat to ourselves) and liked Dar Al Bahar MUCH more.

Disliked : The mattress on our daughter's bed was too hard for her. They asked if everything was ok for us and we mentioned that and the next thing we knew they had swapped the mattress for a softer one.

The most lovely place to stay. So friendly and with the most fantastic views.

The room was beautiful with a lovely view of the sea- the roof terrace also offers a great view of the beach below.  This was my first time in Essaouira and it was convenient to be within walking distance of the beach and markets.  The staff were friendly and the breakfast was good.

Great views!

One of the nicest rooms I've stayed in over seven years of travelling. Beautifully decorated, with a sea view and the sound of the waves at night. The staff were friendly but not intrusive. Breakfast was good value. If you plan to stay then ask for the "Mounia" room - the one pictured here - as it's stunning.

A stunningly beautiful room.

Really lovely little guesthouse with a great view of the sea from the roof. Great breakfast and decent wifi. Excellent location for exploring the back streets and because it's off the main thoroughfair it's quieter than other places I've stayed. Try and avoid the ground floor. You get a key for your room but not the front door, so if you stay on the ground floor you hear when someone rings the bell or knocks to come in. Enjoyed my stay here.

Lovely little guesthouse by the sea

This is our 5th time in Essaouira and our first in Dar Al Bahar - and what a gem!

Where to begin? 

The staff are warm, caring and efficient. There is a small team under the lovely Rahma, who is in charge and cooks wonderfully, Radia who cheerily does a bit of everything else, Mohamed who is officially the night watchman but also the maintenance man, and another lady who helps with the housework (apologies for not getting her name).

We were given a warm welcome and made to feel at home from the start. When it was time to leave, it was a real wrench.

Dar al Bahar was originally a Jewish mill owner’s house (it overlooks the Mellah, once the Jewish quarter) and was knocked through to the next door house which gives it a quirky, individual feel. (Just a note about the stairs, this is not for anyone with mobility problems.)

It is beautifully and imaginatively decorated and kept spotlessly clean. We had asked for sea view and a suite. What a view! What a suite! 

The view! Dar al Bahar is built right on the ramparts of Essaouira with only a small stretch of sand and some fierce rocks between it and the drama of the Atlantic; so no coming back next year to find that another Riad has obscured the view.

And the suite! When Mme Rahma showed us to it, I asked her which bit was ours - all of it was. It would have comfortably taken 5 adults; 2 bedrooms, an en suite, a well equipped kitchen and a generous sitting room.

Our bedroom had blue and white floor tiles and the rest was white. It was a light, airy, spacious and serene room. It had ample wardrobe space.

The sitting room (with an attractive traditional beam and stick ceiling) also had a carved-door cupboard in one corner which had an assortment of books and magazines to borrow and a TV, if we could ever drag ourselves away from the hypnotic sound and sight of the waves.

Incidentally, 5G was being installed by Mohamed to improve the current WiFi while we were there; Dar al Bahar does not rest on its laurels.

In the room is a useful folder of notes relating to Dar al Bahar and other information, including evening menus and laundry service. (The laundry service was excellent, a boon for the travel stained visitor.)

Breakfast is individually served and can be taken in the downstairs dining room, in your own bedroom or on the roof terrace with the spectacular views. There is an ingenious external dumb waiter which takes the food & crockery from the courtyard to the roof terrace.

On windy days we chose to eat in the dining room where Mohamed lit the fire as it was “cold”(for Essaouira). If you want to eat in, you have to order the evening meal beforehand. Mme Rahma was kind enough to fulfill our requests for fish, the freshest ingredients, imaginatively cooked, and the 3 course meals so ample that despite our best efforts, we were unable to eat everything. Wine was also available.

We had a wonderful stay and hope to return to Dar al Bahar and its lovely staff on our next trip.
