For a westerner this is a bit of an odd place. Its quite easy to list its deficiencies- there is no bar, no place to sit in the Sun and , I’m afraid to say, we did not find the food vey palatable. Elsewhere in Japan we have steered for the small local restaurants with no English menu - we’ve loved the food but not here. The best you can say about breakfast is that you can construct a bacon butty but as for dinner … well we had pot noodles in our room most nights. A question of taste I guess. 
Why 5 stars then? Firstly the staff are marvelous- went the extra marathon never mind a mile , simply the best. Secondly our Japanese style room high up  above the river was fabulous with awesome views of the river and oodles of space. Even loved the futons. 
The outside onsen is a great place to chill, if that is the word for a hot spring even if you have to wear an item of clothing which is a cross between a kilt and a loin cloth and does little to cover your modesty. A memorable experience

Weird and wonderful

Fantastic location, food, rooms and service. Watch black kites fishing the river as you lie back in the bankside steaming Onsen. Go to dinner in the funky complimentary robes and cook huge prawns and steak at your table or enjoy the massive buffet. The rooms were huge, traditional and really comfortable and the staff amazing. The manager himself even came out and rescued my friends and I from the roadside when we were soaking wet and bought along hot towels to dry us off. This hotel surpassed itself and I thoroughly recommend it. 

The best hotel I stayed at in Japan

I stayed here with my family in a Japanese style room. It was immaculate, clean and the view outside the window was absolutely beautiful. The dinner and breakfast were buffet style and so many delicious choices! Staff was so helpful and professional. We enjoyed the roten buro and my son went several times a day. They even provide a van to take you to the Kumano Kodo trailhead. Definitely coming back in the fall.

Excellent accommodation!

Wonderful base for doing the Kumona Kodo. We had an awesome stay and a large part was due to the fantastic service. Everyone we came in contact with was polite, helpful and went out of their way to make our stay memorable. Special thanks to K Ooguni, Takemo to and just everyone. We just did not get all the names... By the way we did not take the dinner plan. There are limited places to eat in the evening. Hence one night we tried the buffet. Was just average. Still I give this place 5 stars for their exceptional service. Highly recommended

Execellent Service, Lovely Onsen

A very nice place. Rooms are nice and have a view to the river. Staff is friendly and helpful. The restaurant is nice and provides excellent dinner (But closing at 9 PM) and breakfast. You can access the the hot springs and get a healthy bath.

Nice place

The hotel is very nice and very modern. We were greeted wonderfully by the reception staff and shown straight to our room (805).
The room was traditional Japanese and very large. It has a magnificent view over the river, has an ensuite and own shower room and of course the wonderful Japanese electric toilet seats. The only drawback for us was the traditional Japanese bed, which we aren’t used to, so sleep wasn’t great due to the hardness of the bed. There are block out shutters, so look for them otherwise you’ll have an early wakening.
We had dinner included in our stay and it was amazing. A set meal and also choices from the Japanese smorgasbord. Absolutely delicious.
The hotel also has Japanese baths available, both inside & outside. Once again these are amazing and so relaxing.
Breakfast was also well up to standard with a great choice.
I would absolutely recommend staying at this hotel.

Superb views and Japanese experience 

Our family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids aged 8, 8 and 1) stayed here for one night along our journey exploring the Kumano Kodo trails. We absolutely loved our stay, the traditional Japanese room was huge - so comfortable and clean. The futon beds were prepared so expertly. Furnishings and tatami were luxurious. The hotel is right on the river with both indoor and outdoor hot spring baths. We could bathe as a family in the outdoor bath, it was an amazingly beautiful experience being under the stars with soft rain falling whilst in an Onsen bath on the river bank. Dinner and breakfast was a large choice of Japanese foods in buffet style ... it all looked amazing but not that worth it for us personally due to our dietary restrictions, the staff accomodated us as best as they could. The kids yukatas were adorable. The hotel is close to the Kumano Hongu Taisha section of trails and a great stop on the way to experience the Japanese countryside and Onsen in this region! 

1 night stay on Kumano hikes

The ryokan is a little dated but good, surprisingly there is an elevator to the room floor. Appreciate that there is one staff who speak good English - Mr.Honda if I’m not mistaken.

The onsen was the main point we chose this hotel. The outdoor onsen is consider ‘mixed gender’ onsen. Luckily they provide ‘kimono’ for ladies to cover up. 

The room have lovely views of the river. Food was buffet style with 3 sides(dinner). Average taste but huge variety! My child was very happy with it.

Overall a relaxing stay if you visit this area. 

Nice outdoor onsen

Kawayu Midoriya was our home base for two days of day-trip hiking segments of the Kumamoto Kodo. Although a bit less frequented by western tourists, we found the staff warm, friendly and gracious. The traditional Japanese accommodations were just what we were looking for on this part of our trip. We booked the room with both breakfast and dinner and found the buffet settings for both meals more than adequately varied and abundant. About 200 other guests were booked the same day, but none of the facilities felt over-crowded and we always had plenty of access to both the gender-separated indoor baths or the mixed gender riverside outdoor thermal baths. There were several staff members who were fluent in English, and all the others did their very best to help, even when language was a problem. I would definitely recommend this inn to friends and would stay again myself.
