Hostel is an annex of a temple. The decoration feels makes you feel that you are in a temple. It was an interesting experience to stay there. Overall a good experience and I would recommend it. 

Positives:
-Hostel was clean and very suitable for families. 
-Fairly well located at about a 20 minutes walk from the train station and 15 minutes fom the main tourist spots. 
-Good value for money.

Negatives:
-Staff could be friendlier.
-No air conditioning. A fan was provided. Although not an issue for us because the nights we stayed -august- were relatively cool. However I can imagine that it can get quiet hot.

Neutral:
-Have in mind that there is a 9:45pm curfew, (however it is not such a big deal many tourist attractions close at 5 or 6pm.
-Bed provided is a futon.

Ok place to stay

it was a pleasant place to stay for Takayama festival. It is about 15-20 min walk from the statio, but there is uphill on the way to hostel. I didn‘t talk much to the owners, but they have been smiling and asking anything i need whenever I met them in the hall. The female dorm room is big and clean. 

nice quiet place

This hotel is located in the annex building of a Buddhist temple. I stayed there with my mother for a few days. It has charm but as the building is old with no air conditioning and no dehumidification it is rather dump and not so agreeable. 

Guest are not allowed to stay in the premises between 9h30 and 15h00, which is rather unusual, especially since I have seen them clean before 9h30!! Why request us to get out then? 

I was shocked that men are taking care of the women's area: bathroom and shower room, walking in freely without any respect for your privacy. 

There is a rather strict curfew at 22h, the owners come down and turn all lights and fans off, lock up all the doors and windows, which sort of forces you to go to your room. 

The staff and owners are not so nice, they cannot speak English and don't bother smiling back at you. On top of this, if you are doing something they don't approve of, be sure to be shouted out in Japanese, they do know how to make you feel uncomfortable.

I don't recommend this place. Nice spot but not so agreeable and unfriendly staff. They are far better places in Takayama... and in the rest of Japan!
